What's the point of wearing a GMT if you can't fly a plane?

What's the point of wearing a submariner if you can't dive?

What's the point of wearing a daytona if you don't race cars?

What's the point of wearing a yachtmaster if you don't have a yacht?

What's the point of wearing a skydweller if you don't fly first class or have your own private plane?

What's the point of wearing a day date if you're the president of nothing?

OH nm, this is about safety.

What is the point of owning an ROLEX GMT if you cannot wear it when Travel?

I recently spent a couple weeks in Italy. I wore my solid gold rootbeer the entire time and enjoyed every minute.

The point of owning an ROLEX GMT if I cannot wear it when travel is that I work in multiple time zones and have friends and family in multiple time zones. It is useful for me to simultaneously show two or three different time zones. I like a date function, I use the date function, I like the cyclops and for me the cyclops makes the date function easier to use. The bi rotatable bezel is also useful for me when I need to time things.

Contrary to the supposition that I cannot wear it when I travel, I actually can and do wear it when I travel. It's another reason for owning a watch with a GMT function. As for safety concerns, this has been discussed so frequently that it's just a waste of server space to have the same conversation all over again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again.............

I find that being trained in hand to hand combat takes away the tremendous fear factor that many obviously face. I'm not going to risk my life over a stupid watch, but I won't willingly hand it over without a good tussle.

I don't know about the U.S, But when someone who have beautiful watches travel to European , especially some of the biggest City there like London, Paris, Madrid, Milan... People always say don't wear nice watches on the street... Because the thief always there waiting for expensive watches.

I mean those countries are the most developed in the world, not some place like India, Iraq... And still cannot stop the thief? Can someone who live in those countries confirm if those warning is true or not?

Maybe Rolex should invent some anti-thief Bracelet? because their watches is so popular/eyes-catching that can be seen by thief from far distance?
They should put airtags under the casebac

We are going to Egypt and west Asia. Sadly I might not bring my gmt master.

I don’t want the unwanted attention and the people are not that friendly.

In jungle Asia you can wear expensive watch in a tuktuk no problem. They couldn’t care less.

That’s the reality now.

If this is what you truly think, no wonder why you’re asking…

I’m sure I can’t add much more to what has been said already.

If you work for a company that frequently conducts business abroad, they likely have security professionals that can give you travel advice.

I too was told by my AD that this year they have received the most reported stolen Rolex from their customers than from the past 10 years.

The popularity and design choices of modern Rolex are meant to flex and grab attention. It's the price we have to deal with for wearing a popular and expensive timepiece. The only solution is to use common sense and not show it off. Be discreet and enjoy it. Stay safe.

Nice that everybody is downplaying reality.
European cities are not safe compared to Middle East, China, Singapore or Japan.
Just too many shady area’s.

Does that stop me from wearing my watches, no. I refuse to live in fear.

I've worn a Rolex every day in NYC for many years..I usually take it off on the Subway but that's just the way I've always been going back a very long time.

That being said, I am a little less comfortable or have to be more aware to have one on that I know is sought after and easy to spot..such as a 126610LV or maybe a BLNR..not that I don't wear them but I hate the idea that they are noticed and clearly known.

A lot of this is all in our heads too...as I am wearing a Datejust that I recently got, no way is that noticed and it's 'safe'..which is totally ridiculous but I actually was thinking that when I first got it!

The thing that bothers me the most is not the potential for theft, is the idea that the criminals have little or nothing to fear in NYC for hurting and robbing someone unless it's an extreme situation...I can't get that out of my head and the criminals have a license to break the law in many of our cities..

I will add before I stir up the hate for my city..NYC is safer than many cities and we're not fat and have i think the most amazing women!

Buy a hype watch deal with the hype surrounding it. Luxury goods are often targeted. Most of the time nothing happens but always be vigilant.

If you feel uncomfortable, then leave it at home. I can assure you that vacations and spending time with family can be enjoyable without a Rolex on your wrist.

I carry two watches with similar functionality when I travel; one is my 16710 GMT II, and the other is my US$199 Timex beater. Which one I wear at any given time and place depends on my sense of situational awareness. Before I retired twenty years ago, I spent about half my time traveling all over the world and wore my 1675 GMT everywhere without any hesitation.

Times have changed.

Since I don't generally cross time zones it's really not much of an issue. Wore bluesy on the keys, fwiw.

My Seadweller is never off my wrist except when I'm sleeping. I've travelled the world wearing this watch, in a physically demanding job and it's stood up to everything I've thrown at it.
Recently had it serviced and a good polish. To be fair, it needed it after almost twenty years of technical neglect and it's last service!
It may have lost some of it's 'character' but I know where it's been and what it's done...and that's enough for me.
Cheers
Rob

I’m off to Australia next month and I will, as usual, bring my BLRO, my Daytona and one PM, this time probably my YG Sub. I also bring one of my dive watches (St. moritz) on a Velcro strap as my decoy watch. Im older so I don’t go out partying in questionable venues, don’t get hammered (as I did in my early years), and try to be aware of my surroundings. Sure it can still happen, but staying vigilant does make a difference. This goes for anyone with any “lustable” items, not just Rolex.

I think a lot of people here don’t understand what’s happening nowadays. There are people that target luxury watches and it’s their full time job. They sometimes work with accomplices that spot your watch at a restaurant / bar / mall / club wherever and tell their thief’s friends. So first of all it doesn’t only happen to shady places but you can get your watch spotted by a hotel staff, a waiter at a restaurant, a barman, Uber driver so basically anywhere. And you need to understand that people who want to steal your watch never ask gently. They beat you, stab you, uses machette or guns. All the people saying it’s safe and live your life you are completely unaware and gives dangerous advice.

Take a self defense class. Gain some confidence and some skills.

I whole heartedly agree with this. However, if your life is in danger and you can avoid injury (or worse) by giving up your watch, do it and forget that you took a self defense class.

I agree. It's just a watch. But being trained in hand to hand combat not only gives you the ability to confront your watch thief opponent if necessary, but it gives you the mental confidence not to be scared of every waiter, uber driver and subway rider.

Hey, opposite of tough guy, I meant no disrespect, it's just that I've been in law enforcement for years and have see many people that walk around life playing the victim. I'm not saying it's you. But there are many people that are scared of their own shadow. Those people, again not saying it's you, just have to buck up, and realize that not everyone is out to get them. Self defense classes help people like that. Even if they're really old and weak. Again, not saying it's you.
