I’m surprised that these too (or similar) aren’t coming up more.

They would definitely fit the “plain and boring (but in a good way)” bill.

I guess it depends if it’s the “watch collector” or the “watch wearer” speaking.

And yes I agree that a “one watch collection” is an oxymoron.

A good friend of mine has had a black 39mm OP as his one watch "collection" for years.

This isn’t hypothetical for me: I (financially) consolidated my collection to one nice watch. It’s a 36mm Day-Date 118209, white gold, smooth bezel. For me, it’s ideal: flies under the radar but gives me the hefty satisfaction of pm, and I rely on the complication at least once a day. I have to suit up for work but it goes just as well with jeans and a t shirt.

I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t eyed other watches since getting this piece, but I’ve never seriously gotten tempted to purchase anything else. It really feels like all the watch I need. —The asterisk being my cheap beater that I use for rougher situations.

I'm an avid scuba diver, so the Submariner (124060) would be my pick.

This would probably be my pick for a one watch rotation:

Yea there are plenty of cheaper replacements for the Daytona. I own a Daytona and a few tag carrera pieces. Obviously different classes but functionality they’re the same.

Daytona is comfortable as hell but I might have to side with a sub or GMT for 1 solo rolex

I‘ve thought about trying to pare down but I simply can‘t do it, even though I don‘t have very many nice watches.

If forced it would have to be my 2017 Breitling Superocean II dive watch. I travel to too many parts of the world where I wouldn‘t want a sub.

Up until I got my 116500 black, I would have said my 114060.

But it’s the 116500 and it’s not even close. Comfort, good looks, goes with everything.
It’s my new daily, and will be for a long time. Instantly felt like I owned it for years.

Truly, I concur with you both 100%. Imho, the silverish white dial looks so clean and elegant set in a perfect case size.

I’m still in love with it after all these years of watch collecting…

People often ask me what my favorite watch ever is. The answer is always broken up into favorite watch to own in a collection or favorite one and only.

For me the perfect one and only watch is a 116710/126710. Both are compatible with several bracelets. Bezel choice for me would be BLNR or LN. that’s a bit of a toss up.

Favorite to own within a collection is a Daytona.

Of the entire Modern Rolex Line Up?
I'd go a JC Deep Sea

Of the watches I own?
Probably my Panerai PAM687

My "Cheapie" would either be my 04 Seamaster Chrono ($2500) or my Seiko Turtle ($500) depending on where the budget cap is

That having been said, you'd need to be holding a gun to my head in order to make me follow through

No brainer. Black SS Sub. Date preferred, but no date ok.
This watch has captured my imagination from 1973 as a kid reading National Geographic magazines to 2017 when I finally bought one.

Point blank, for me only GMT Pepsi had a 1675 at age 25 then upgraded to a 16710, it's the most comfortable Rolex I have ever worn.

My Tudor Submariner 75090 with black dial and bezel because it is 36mm and fits my small frame better than the other Rolex sports models I have owned.
