One time a guy came up and said “nice moon watch”. I was wearing my Daytona.

Black sub date without a doubt is the most recognizable SS watch.

BLRO without a doubt. Or two tone datejust fluted. Sub date in the mix. Daytona somewhere.

I’d say
DJ
Sub
BLRO
Daytona.

So at least here, the younger generations already want a Pepsi, because she sings about it
Thanks for this. It probably is a regional thing. And I'd love to hear that song!

Your reply is reminding me that I actually have gotten a few comments on a vintage (1675) Pepsi, but I think that's because the bezel insert and patina on this watch are noticeable. I've gotten no comments on a 16710 Pepsi, with its faded and more subtle bezel insert, which I wear much more often than the 1675.

Most comments on any of my watches, yellow dial OP41. 99.9% of the public are indifferent but some just like a bright watch that pops.

I think the general public has changed their perspective as there's been a lot of news about the value of Rolex over the past five years. It used to be that none knew anything the brand other than the name. DJ TT was the most recognized in say the 80s and 90s. Now the Sub has had so much publicity that awareness has grown. It's a changing landscape.

Even though it’s not the most popular amongst us, the watch enthusiasts, the DJ is the most recognizable and worldwide most popular piece.

The black SS Sub and DJ is the most recognizable but doesn’t get the rock star treatment as it’s so common.

This is ABSOLUTELY spot on

I agree with this; the influence of social media and "flex" culture has changed perceptions. People don't want to flex a DJ, they flex SS Sports watches

I mean TBH in terms of the non-watch people I know personally, it's DJ and then there is a HUGE dropoff, even to the Sub.

IME people that recognize a Sub will recognize the GMT and Daytona.

Then I think think there's a small drop off to the OPs and Exp IIs, but those have some distinctive Rolex design elements people will recognize.

Then there is another drop off to the Explorer I. In fact I have now had 2 people with Subs literally on their wrist ask me what I was wearing when they saw my Explorer I.

I was told by a well known Auction House authority that the most recognizable wristwatch in the world is the Ladies Datejust

Among this crowd, you are likely to get the divided opinions that you have gotten in this thread. The problem is that most all of the designs are so copied these days that nobody knows what any watch is. I could probably go to Wal-Mart in my small town and buy at least two watches that are at least similar to a Rolex.

In my last few years, I have had less than five people actually recognize what watch I was wearing anywhere - and this is switching between my Daytona, Sub, and Datejust. For clarity purposes my Daytona is TT and my DJ36 is also TT on a jubilee.

Interesting. I’d think the Cartier Tank is more generally (instantly) recognizable than the Ladies Datejust.

I think Datejust with jubilee is most recognizable to a non-WIS.

To the general population it’s likely any type of submariner, then maybe a Pepsi or a gold DD or DJ. I’d say gold because many generations looked at the gold Rolex as quite the achievement - usually marking the pinnacle of success, or maybe a retirement gift.

Most people barely register what you wear though unless they’re also watch nerds, or hoping to rob you…
