AP is a special, but very finicky watch. It’s like having a Ferrari …. easy to scratch, dent and very expensive to service.

Read posts above. More AP RO produced annually than Rolex Daytonas.

Yes, it is true.

Btw, neither are very low volume. I was comparing relative in the first comment (in my post) and then in absolute (for both) in the second. You took it out of context. The reality is BOTH are mass produced.

You WILL eventually get both anyway. Trust me lol.

But right now, I think your best bet will be the PM Rolex. You’re already familiar with the brand but now get to experience it in gold.

But you will wind up with an AP. Once you see the way the bracelet reflects light and the craftsmanship on the case, you won’t rest until you have one.

This is a fun one.
Of course you can’t go wrong. You’re going to be really happy with either. And eventually probably both.

I think it’s a very fair comparison. I’d say the Rolex is easier to wear daily just because it’s a Rolex and it’s so robust and solid.
Even though the ap is stainless vs a full gold bracelet it still is more like a really cool piece of jewelry than a watch.

I love AP and have bought four this year. I’ve also bought four pm rolex this year. (Just realizing that now lol)

Since you don’t have an AP I say go for that.
My experience is you’re not going to be into stainless rolex anymore so you’ll figure out how to get the gold Daytona too.

As you can tell from how split the responses in this thread are, they’re dead even.

Very hard choice. Both great and beautiful watches. Given the fact you already have several SS Rolexes including a Daytona I would go with the AP! Easier to scratch though

I chose AP offshore as a Daytona substitute. My thinking was that AP is haute horology and should be superior to Rolex. I love the design of offshore which made my choice an easy one. I still love the design and esthetics of the watch but accuracy of the movement is atrocious. AP refuses to resolve the issue and suggests that movement performance is within spec (I see as much as 30 seconds deviation per day).

Now, given that original post deals with similar dilemma that I had, perhaps it is pertinent for me to comment. Don’t u think?

If u feel I am an outlier, please visit AP forum. There are significant issues with the brand. QC seems to be non existent. I wish I was warned about this when I was making my choice.

I still feel that AP makes beautiful watches and hope it will resolve all the existing issues and make it right by collectors.

I agree with the quandary of the spending that much money on a SS when you could get a PM... PM just makes more sense. But I would opt for a PM watch I didn't have in SS already, so DD in your case, or SkyD.

I completely agree with ebis's comment above: entering a new brand like AP would be more exciting to me than just a different flavored Daytona.

So between these two watches, AP.

This brings up an interesting point and I would really like people’s opinion on it. How much of this decision, rests on “public” recognition you own a fine watch. I probably am not going to explain this well but does the fact that everyone, and I mean non-wises, would be “impressed” or at least “recognize” that you are wearing a fine timepiece when the word “Rolex” comes out. To a non-wis, if you tell them you are wearing an AP, they won’t know the difference between that and an Invicta, but mention “Rolex” and there is instantaneous recognition.

I am probably not expressing it clearly, but would/does that weigh in to the fact of wearing a Rolex versus another fine timepiece?

(Full Disclosure) Call me shallow, but I actually get little lift when people are impressed I am wearing a Rolex.

Yes Rolex is equal to non-wis to Rolls or Mercedes, a luxury brand, that either they cannot afford, don’t want to afford, or decide not to wear as it’s unnecessary display of wealth or a pretentious status.

AP is known to very few, And few can’t pronounce Audemars Piguet.

I ve always loved the way AP looks on other people’s wrist, but the minute I put it on, I hate the hell out of it, I tried to buy one so many times and always ended up deciding against it.

There are also a few things about the brand itself that I really don’t like , so for me Daytona, even because I owned that particular model and it is incredible!

However, 3 weeks ago some not very nice people followed me home and destroyed my window to get inside and tried steal it unsuccessfully (but I got rid of it cause I was too scared) so be careful cause even if people say “no one cares about your Rolex” they do, trust me!

Sorry re: the break in. How did you stop it from
being taken?

The thugs that are looking to steal, they they know.

I was in front of them when they were trying to break in, then some other people heard me screaming at them so they came to help, they were in a very disadvantaged position since my window is 7 meters high and they were standing on a very tiny ledge, I was lucky, in a way the burglars were too.

I wrote a detailed post about it but then discussion steered towards discussions that are a bit off limits here so it got deleted so no point on bringing that up again.

But I do want to make OP aware that for as good as a gold watch can be, it does come at a price which is not only its monetary value, at least in certain areas.

That being said, once again, Daytona over AP :)

Going through the same dilemma but the reverse I just bought a RG DD40 and now I'm trying to decide if I should buy a YG Rolex or a SS AP like the 26331st. Tough one!

Little lift when someone recognizes your Rolex. Because everyone recognizes a Rolex.
Much bigger lift when someone recognizes your AP because they most likely appreciate watches vs just thinking you are rich

Fwiw, I feel comfortable wearing my ss ROC in most situations as most people don’t know what it is (ie work related events and meetings, grocery store, etc) however I only feel comfortable wearing my PM Daytona in very specific situations or at home.

**Update**

First, I really appreciate all the comments from everyone. I think I’ve gone back and re-read this thread about 4-5 times.

So after going back and forth for the past couple of months, I decided to add the gold Daytona. While the AP is an amazing watch. If I look at all my watches, the AP would for the most part, look like the rest of them, a steel watch. Plus, a gold Daytona is a great way to cap off my Rolex collection.

Initially, I wanted the YG Daytona (from my original post) with the red chrono and black sub-dial hands. Especially since they removed those from the updated 12 series version and from the stock pictures didn’t look as nice. But I decided to wait until I saw the new one to make my decision. Luckily, I had the chance to compare them both in person and I really like the changes they made to the case, dial markers and sub-dials. Even though the hands are now gold and don’t stand out as much, I feel the watch is a little more refined and just as appealing. Big thanks to my AD for getting me the first one they received!

After wearing it for about a week I definitely know I made the right decision! Now for the important part, the wrist shot.

Congratulations! Beautiful watch. I had the previous version and my wife was not happy when I traded it away. It was her favorite of my collection. Enjoy!
