This frees up Rapinoe to go on tour with the (Dixie) Chicks.

Congratulations to England ,through to the quarter finals on penalties & after a player sent off for stamping .It couldn't have been a closer game & Nigeria really outplayed us for long periods . Next game is against Colombia or Jamaica .

One of the first times I actually rooted against a US team.... Glad they're gonzo and MR is retiring!

This thread doesn’t have a lot of positive energy about the world cup. What a shame!

Been enjoying the matches I’ve seen and admire the level. The Matildas’ round 16 match the other night broke Australian television viewer records, and it’s been a great event so far.

rapinoe is an arse. I quote:
"despite those wins [world cup & olympics], I’ve been devalued, I’ve been disrespected and dismissed because I am a woman, and I’ve been told that I don’t deserve any more than less because I am a woman. You see, despite all the wins, I’m still paid less than men who do the same job that I do."

per US soccer federation president Cindy Parlow (herself a member of the legendary 1999 world cup team):
From 2015 to 2019, USWNT players made more money than USMNT players as a team both overall and on an average per-game basis. The USWNT did play more games due to the difference in competitions and international calendar than the USMNT, but they also earned more money than the USMNT per game.

They did not sue because they weren't being paid the same as the men - they already got the same pay. They sued because they wanted the US soccer federation to make up for past and future discrepancies in what FIFA pays out for World Cup shares. They don't want the same pay, they want more.

Hopefully now the USNWT can detox

England is a strong contender but the stomping that took place on a Nigerian player's back was a very bad look although no injury was done, it resulted in a red card and a 2 game ban. England still won with 1 player down for almost half the match.

Hard to watch now… Penalty shoot out. Yikes.

Clare Hunt, Caitlin Foord and Mary Fowler have all been just so great.

I know it’s only a quarter-final win, but still… Really proud of the Matildas.

Congratulations to Spain on winning their first Women’s World Cup and in a very entertaining match.

England came out with a 3-5-2 formation which didn’t make sense to me given they are shaky in the back and have good forwards. After being down 1-0 at half, they then removed their forward Russo for defender James and go to a 4 person back line. Makes no sense when down 1-0.

Anyway, both teams had their chances but Spain’s possession game was the difference. Kudos to England’s keeper who kept them in the match with save after save including a blocked PK.

A bit of sad news as the Spanish left back who scored the winning goal, Olga Carmona, was informed after the match that her father had passed away just 2 days before the finals. He had battled a long illness and the family elected to not tell her before the final.
