Hence it's your decision and you're happy with the trade that's really what matters, but I would say you gave up a lot to achieve it and I'm sure I wouldn't do same.

I agree but what's done is done. Enjoy the Aquanaut OP!

WatchCharts puts the current market value of the Patek at 76,500. Retail is 49K.

Yikes. Somebody made a killing. And it wasn’t you. But I would’ve kicked that Daytona also.

I'll be the first to say I don't get a lot of the hype over Patek Phillipe. I appreciate their movements and their history but never warmed up to most of their styling choices. I also don't do watches on leather straps.

They just seem fragile compared to Rolex.

As you might have guessed, this would not have been a trade I'd have been interested in unless I was the counter party.

The retail price is really more like $449,000 if you factor in all the other watches you'd have to buy before you could get one at msrp. ha

The trade value I got for both Daytona and Smurf was more than my cost basis so I did alright.

I'd bet most in this thread have never seen or felt the 5168g on wrist. It's a game changer once you do.

Congrats! The patek is nice but wow, that Daytona alone is a grail piece! Eek. Big boy trade haha.

I approve of this trade, however I am a patek guy. All the watches you turfed are easily reaquired, and the their values have been in decline. Everyone here thinks their watches are worth more than they actually are, until they try to offload. I recently let go a 5726 blue and a white gold blue Daytona for the big boy 5270R. From my perspective I got rid of duplicate reference models in my collection. My hesitation is that I’d likely never see these watches again, however without doing the trade, I’d likely never see a 5270 either. I’ve come to the conclusion that you can have anything, but you can’t have everything…

So it’s the 5168G 42mm?

If so that’s in the high 80s to mid 90s. Not 70k

I would do what you did, much better to have one top tier high horology piece that feels truly special than any number of mass produced aimed at the high street mass market mid tier Rolex watches imo

I think the Patek is an amazing reference. I could care less how you acquired it. The fact that you were willing to let go of some beautiful pieces is a testament to how much you appreciate your new watch.

Wear the Patek in the best of health!

yes 5168G. You're right, unworn are running high 80's - 90's. Worn but in retail condition can be found for mid/high 70's low 80's. My 4 in trade equaled $76k

I think this is amazing. I’m not at the point in my collecting journey where I’m ready to do this. But I love that you found a true grail reference, found a perfect example and made some hard decisions and sacrifices to acquire it.

I think the point of your post was to see what others have done and traded to acquire their grail. Would have loved to see that. Unfortunate that it turned into a bunch of judgements on the soundness of your trade.

Congrats! Wear it in good health. Can’t wait until I get to see one in person!

More judgements is more likely :-D

Actually, a, "Bunch of judgements," is the best description I've heard yet for the TRF.

from market price perspective it's good.
However, I wouldn't do it. Just because I think all Aquanaut is overpriced even at MSRP level. I just don't like weird grenade texture.
At same price level, I would rather have a Nautilus

@Soxfan39 - if you are happy - that's all that matters. You are playing to a bit of a biased crowd here, which I am sure you realize by now.

Financially, you know your cost bases and I am sure you did your research so that this made sense for YOU and got you your own grail level piece! So, well done on that count!

Personally, I am probably a bit biased toward the Rolexes, but I think that's because I WANT a gold Daytona, I WANT a Smurf, and many other Rolexes - anyone got a free Day-Date laying around???

So, you traded some other people's grail watches to acquire your own. Nothing wrong with that - now someone else has the chance to go and acquire the ones you just traded.

To you, I say well done and congrats to you!!

I was tempted to trade my 16528 towards a new AP. But I came to my senses. The vintage Daytonas are going to be grail pieces. If Daytona history is a used as the basis. I sucked it up and just bought my 2 new APs outright.

Now that Patek you just got I definitely want. So I have to figure that out.
