Just a thought but has anyone in the history of social etiquette ever been judged on, or even noted for, the watch they were wearing at a black tie event?

Most of these watches posted here are no better than a simple black dial Submariner.

People are in general polite and nobody will criticize a fellow guest at such an event. Not even when wearing white socks with sandals.

I think a faux pas will be noted by the casual observer though wearing a wrong watch is not so bad as i.e. using your phone which shows an even greater lack of respect to the host.

Many (if not most) of the watches posted here are, in terms of etiquette, not appropriate for a black tie event.

In 2023, however, only those who follow the "rules" of said etiquette actually care.

To answer the OP's question, I could show him literally thousands of watches better suited to a black tie event.

Sticking a black alligator strap on a stainless steel sports watch with a date, a cyclops, a fluted bezel and a red second hand does not a "dress"watch make

rolex isnt my choice for a formal event. I would pick a cartier tank, a calatrava, or no timepiece at all.

I do it silently in parallel with mentally correcting their grammar.

Some darn fine watches on here. My favorite is the black dial vintage Omega. In terms of social etiquette - who cares, wear what makes you happy. Wristwatches are barely 100 years old, and who knows what will be fashionable in a few years. Maybe we’ll go back to powdered wigs and tricorner hats.

Meh. I've heard hundreds, if not thousands, of gossipy critiques and criticisms, and not once was 'incorrect watch for the occasion' ever mentioned.

While I don’t subscribe to the proper etiquette of no watch, I do feel it should be understated and unobtrusive. My go-to watch for black tie events is a 1950’s Omega Seamaster. 34mm, no date, leather strap that matches my tux.

Magnificent
It took me a great many years to find just the right dress watch, then I literally stumbled upon the GS sbgw253 and the rest is history.
So many times I had tried on smaller watches but they looked like the watches I had grown out of eons ago. I even had a beautiful IWC which was adorable for a while but alas it didn't do it for me on my large wrist at 36mm

Many you wear that beautiful Omega in good health

Yep, in the real world nobody would ever care. Only on watch forums is it in issue. Nowadays, Apple Watches are pervasive at these black tie events.

Personally, I wouldn’t wear a G-Shock, Invicta or something of that ilk. But a Rolex is fine.

Two schools of thought, either you can wear what you like, or you’re not supposed to wear a watch with a tux. Either way kinda nullifies the question
