The only people watching what we order for patients is the insurance companies, who dislike new name brand drugs by the way. Physicians can lecture for drug companies and get research sponsorship from them, but that is an entirely different thing. I don't do that either. I give the right drugs to the right patients at the right time, everytime. That's why I get the big bucks. I couldn't care less what new drug or gadget is on the market unless they can show me that it will improve my patient care with research conducted on humans.
If you don't like your doctor, get a second opinion or seek the opinion of a specialist.

AMEN! No pens, no sticky notes, God forbid I might write for a drug because the pharma rep gave me a plastic 15 cent pen with a logo on it.

We don't get paid anything by the pharmaceutical companies....I take care of my patients, because I swore an oath to do so and because it is what I love doing. I work in a job I love, taking care of people, and most of the time I get great satisfaction from that job.

It makes me feel good when I take care of someone and they feel better! You know the best thing anyone ever said to me is "Hey, you saved my life!" I was in a restaraunt and they guy came up to me. He remembered me because I was the one who cared for him in the ER and I wheeled him to the cath lab. I talked to him the whole way.

There are still medical professionals who care!

Just a sad story indeed...

My heart goes out to the family. As a resident who just finished an internship in which I was in the ER, MICU, and on Medicine and Surgery wards, it really just saddens me to think that someone could be so heartless. If the allegations are true, which it sounds like they are, he will undoubtedly lose his medical license, be liable for personal and professional damages, and will frankly likely go to jail... all for a watch which any decent person would feel slimy wearing anyway. Truly a shame...

As for this comment:

I think enough has been said, but if you want to have an actual constructive discourse on the topic of pharmaceutical companies and their influence on the medical field, you are more than welcome to PM me. I have served on multiple panels as a student and representative of the CIR, and was actively involved in the PharmFree campaign promoted by the AMSA.

I am sorry that you have lost faith in medicine. You have been watching too much Greys Anatomy if you think all physicians are paid by pharma companies.

Yes, this guy should get fired and be prosecuted...without a doubt.

However about the rest:
Brad....are you serious!!! If so you have had a very bad experience or are very narrow minded.

There are good people and bad people in EVERY profession.

When you say that "THEY all are paid by the large cap drug companies. And the majority are persuaded to prescribe a particular brand over another to keep their compensation up" you are just wrong. In fact... I own my own private practice in obstetrics and gynecology. I am very content with what I do and the service I provide to my community. When I prescribe a medication I ALWAYS THINK ABOUT THE PATIENT AND WHAT DRUG WOULD BE BEST FOR THEM. THE DRUG REPS HAVE NO, AND I REPEAT NO INFLUENCE ON THE MEDICATION I PRESCRIBE. Furthermore, Pharmaceutical companies do not pay me for the choice of medication I prescribe.

It makes me sad to think after all my hard work, dedication to the practice of medicine, devoting extensive hours of reading and continuing medical education to help people like you....you can turn around and say stuff like this.

When I was at medical school, someone - presumably a fellow student - stole my copy of Guyton's (a very expensive physiology textbook) that I had left at my desk in the library.

I once had a set of Littman stethoscope earpieces stolen by a colleague. She had lost an earpiece on hers, I lent her my spares & never got them back. Months later when I asked her for them back, she said they were hers & denied ever borrowing them from me.

As others have said there are good & bad people in every walk of life. The medical profession is not immune to base human natures such as dishonesty & greed.

Taking a deceased patient's valuables is absolutely despicable. It brings the profession into disrepute & any doctor who does something like that can & should be disbarred.

I don't see why or how a medical doctor would do something that unethical. I can't see very many doctors going down to this level. Plus, its not that difficult to loose your medical license once a doctor does something bad.

As many of the Doctors here have said, they are people too, subject to the same foibles and faults as the rest of humanity, Doctors have been known to commit acts far more unethical than allowing a patient to die in order to steal a watch, consider Dr. Mengele and his SS colleagues.

Someone jokingly asked if this was an "impulse buy" - I'm sure in a sense it was - a moment of madness, which if we're honest we've all had, if not at this level. Reading the "evidence" in that news report, it would appear that there is little doubt the doctor had the deceased's watch in his possession and quickly and amateurishly attempted disposal when challenged. Proving that he abandoned treatment in order to steal is an entirely different matter - one for the lawyers to earn their fees.

Even if convicted "only" of theft, given the circumstances, he would appear to be unemployable as a doctor. He could be in a lot more trouble than that.

The hospital has issued a statement denying medical negligence & seems to dispute the version of events in the family's complaint:

Quote:
First, we are deeply sorry for the Kubeena family's loss of their father.

Patient safety and quality care are our highest priorities at St. Joseph's Medical Center. We are prevented from discussing the specifics of a patient's care due to federal laws that protect patient privacy. However, we have reviewed the clinical care in this case and believe it was appropriate.

It is generally not our practice to comment on pending litigation. While we do not feel that the complaint paints an accurate picture of what happened, we feel that our patients, our community, and our employees deserve to know that we are committed to the truth and that we will rigorously defend the hospital's reputation.

We were aware that the watch went missing for a short period of time. Notably, the watch in question along with all of the patient's belongings was given to the family members at the hospital while they spent time with their loved one.

We have and continue to fully cooperate with authorities on any external investigation. The physician who cared for Mr. Kubeena was employed by an independent medical group and has not been scheduled at St. Joseph's Medical Center since the first week of June.

St. Joseph's has a long legacy as a trusted community partner; serving residents of the Stockton area with quality care for 110 years. We remain committed to providing our patients with excellent care, an excellent experience, and a safe environment.
