I don't consider myself to be one of the "beautiful" people. I live a nice life and work hard and purchasing a Rolex is a luxury that I afford in my income bracket. Today, being successful is having a job, holding the job and paying your bills.

Rolex doesn't care if I meet or beat their "expected class" of customer as long as I can buy it and pay for it. Rolex has a name. They have it due to a history of good product reliability, innovation and advertising to back that up and keep the name out in front of the masses.

I wonder how much less expensive each watch could be if they cut down on the ads?? Truly, they are not what influenced my to want a Rolex. To me, the word Rolex and watch are synonymous.

I think Rolex watches have a broad appeal. Clearly their marketing puts forth an image of appealing to athletes, adventurers or celebrities, etc, but the watches also have enough of a robust image so as to appeal to people not in those categories, everyday people, if you will.

Some people just like watches. If you are one of those people, eventually you will be drawn to Rolex.

I wear my Rolex to work and tell most people it's a fake because of the way people perceive you. You can't haggle anything because people WILL say "hey you want a discount and your wearing a Rolex?". And customers say "nice watch, you must be charging me too much." And I do business mostly with people that are worth $10mil or much more. I had a customer complain about a price and bring out the Rolex card. That guy has a jet and a 105' yacht!!!

Unfortunately that's the way it is here in Miami. ROLEX=RICH or at least "YOU DON'T NEED MONEY YOU HAVE PLENTY OF IT!"
Most often, the ONLY people that notice mine are my rich WIS friends and other business acquaintances.

People I work for never get a glimpse of my wrist because I move too fast...They call me The Breeze!

I have a WIS friend at church that notices them, but he's only a chemist.

Let's be honest. You have to have a certain level of disposable income in order to put thousands of dollars on your wrist. Beyond that you also need the will/desire to do so. I'm an office professional, and one of very few that I have seen in my workplace with a Rolex. Many have the disposable income here, but few the will/desire to make the purchase. Beyond those two drivers I would say that you will find all kinds of folks who own Rolex. I think the thing that brings us all together is the sense of history in the brand (not necessarily a lifestyle/image).

I am a fairly simple person. Old Navy dressing, roll out of bed and walk next door to work, love to camp, hike, fish, target shoot, ride hard on my dirtbike on the weekends, and try to find anything interesting to fill my time and keep my mind from wandering since I quit drinking type of guy. I have no idea what status that fits into but it is me nonetheless.

I'm just a bum who is very fortunate to be blessed w/ the privilege of owning several of these fine timepieces. Most importantly, to be among the company of such a fine bunch of folks on this forum. If not for such fine folks, I would be out several $$$$!

No - I do not fall into the "in" crowd. However, very grateful to be among the TRF bunch!

Great thread

I'm a policeman. I don't wear my watch at work, (I work with trucks all day) The reason I like Rolex so much is that they make a great product that does what it says it will do. That, and I think they are incredibly good looking timepieces. I think that if you didn't know any watch brands at all, and you saw a bunch of watches either on someone's wrist, or from a small distance, a Rolex would ALWAYS stand out. It's a very unique and striking watch. Also Rolex has a history, and for me that's important. They don't skimp on materials, they don't outsource to a third world country, and they stand by what they make. That's important to me. I'll give my watch to my kids one day. How many things can you say that about?

Rolex is more of an "upper middle" class watch, and sometimes worn by the very wealthy. As far as luxury watches go, Rolex is very affordable. It's easy for a career couple to own one each, perhaps even a TT model.

Yes, I think I fit into the mold - tennis, golf, Porsche, etc. They seem to advertise in every magazine on my coffee table.

I detest anything flashy that screams "look at me." Which is why I wear my SS Airking most of the time. Don't get to wear nice watches to work (Police Officer) too often but I do wear suits and ties to Masonic meetings and a Tux about 12 times a year. Other than my house I have no debt, pay cash for my toys. Nice middle priced home but in a VERY nice suburb. Have alot of nice toys, but more importantly alot of nice friends.

What an excellent discussion!

All of you “already” have a Rolex, many of you more than one (wow); I’m in the process of searching for one (started last week).

This discussion makes me to think WHY DO I WANT a Rolex watch? Great question!

I always had the opinion (right or wrong) that Rolex owners were these upper-crust kinds of people. My neighbor is a former banker with tons of money - yeppers he wears a Rolex! My dentist wears an older Sub. Walking through the mall looking at the jewelry store windows and seeing bling bling bling I could hear my inner-voice saying, NO, invest in the market, buy property, etc. I’m still not of “that” income level to go out and spend 10K, 20K, 30K and up on a timepiece (at that price it’s no longer a watch!!!). I probably never will be - I enjoy working less than 40 hours a week too much and add to that a son away at college and it's just not in the cards.

As this discussion has shown, today’s Rolex owner isn’t that stereotypical guy or gal living on the Mediterranean, or upper Manhattan in a penthouse! He or she is just like me; middle class, educated (degreed or otherwise) and willing to spend a little more than necessary on a timeless, quality crafted, dependable work of art!

I’ve worn a Krieger tidal chronometer for the past twenty years. It was a great watch – got my first one when my son was born (1990). Over the last four years, I’ve had to purchase in the aftermarket (Ebay) four of them for a plethora of reasons. Add that up and it’s over two grand! Why not spend an additional two grand more and have a beautiful Rolex?

My budget for a Rolex is in the 3-5K range. I think that's a fair amount to spend, don't you? I love the way they look and there’s a sense of style that can not be replicated. Is it something I “need” –absolutely not; any budget quality watch would work. It’s bigger than that; it’s something I “want”.

I’m a retired Navy Chief; did 24 years active duty. Presently, I’m a professor at the local community college and the evening dean. The pay stinks, but I LOVE what I do. When I see the light bulb turns on and a student gets it, it makes my day.

So to answer the question, do I fit into the typical Rolex in-crowd, NO! But do I fit into the “modern individual” that appreciates a quality timepiece and is willing to sacrifice and save to get one, OH YES!

It’s my time to own a Rolex!!

If there is a niche market I am sure I do not fit in. Most people would think I am loser because of my professional choice. In the circles I move many have heard about a Rolex but most have not seen one. It is sort of my private passion.

I probably kinda fit.
I actually never considered rolex untill recently. i love watches but never gave rolex a chance due to the "image".
I got exposed and alll i want are rolexes in my collection now.
I am not rich i dont make aa ton, i was apolice for 6 years, been a landman for 4 years and i am finishing up my nursing degree now. my wifes a teacher and i have three kids. so i dont fit it in that sense.

however i do have nice things, my says i always have the boggest and the best, which she hates.
I have a Bmw and bougt my wife one as well. we had 5 different bmw's and i had a hummer too. so i probably fit in that sense.
