Probably "Thanks" or "Thanks, when I grow up I'll get a genuine one"

I was standing in a bar when a man standing next to said "Hey, we have the same watch, well, fake of course" to which I replied "Mine's not" in a tone that left him wondering if I was joking or actually telling the truth, but this was in a nice non hostile environment :)

What's the point ?

Say thank you, and look elsewhere if you don't want to be bothered...

Is this thread for real? I'm a biker myself and I've gotta say he probably thought you were a douche for telling him how much your watch cost. A simple thanks for the compliment would have been fine.

"Thanks are you into watches?"

If not the convo ends, if so the convo begins.

I think a simple Thanx would have sufficed...

+1 for me, better to let them think it's a fake than risk an unexpected "encounter" later... YMMV

Who knows, I did this one time and ended up talking with the guy for an hour lol
Even if I'm asked I won't tell how much I paid. The answer is never good.
If I'm 'forced' for some reason, I say it was a gift.

I always downplay what I have.

Someone says, "Nice watch!"

I usually say, "Thanks! It's pretty nice and solid for sure. There are others that I'd like to get though."

Usually this sparks a conversation beyond the watch you're wearing and you can find a WIS from this. You guys end up talking about other watches like IWC, Audemars, etc...

I won't price drop unless it's one of my real close friends who I like to egg on.

You'd get a slightly different reaction if you said that in a pub in England

Yeah, but bragging isn't; especially about how much stuff costs.

The watch would never be taken off my wrist, for numerous reasons.

The response I gave is intended to be brash and, some may say, crass but it is exactly what is expected in the situation. There are no subtleties or niceties, you state your case and to hell with the consequenses.

"Thanks are you into watches?" would get you a smack in the mouth and then you loose the watch or at the very least a queer look.
Then you should have said, "Oh, can you tell time?"

I've found a simple "Thanks Brother" works well no matter who you're hanging out with.

The conversation about the watch was dropped and we moved on to other things.

I really had to say that, rather than try and fob it off as something other than genuine and expensive. If I tried to play it down I would have lost face.

I was there on my own for another hour.

A few friends arrived later we stayed for a couple of hours, got bored and left.

What would you have said?
Here is a piece of advice. Never drop the price to a stranger the way the OP did. What if the stranger replied "oh yeah, you should see my 200,000 dollar Patek...." Buuuuurnnnn.

Takes all sorts alright...Maybe OP was so intimidated he was just panicked into an immature response. (I'm being very kind)

"Thanks " is good enough...if the conversation continues, then maybe how or why you got it. But price should never be part of the conversation. its tacky. If they aren't watch people, then the price means nothing to them. If they are, then they already have an idea...
