I am glad that Rolex offer a 41mm Date Just. Anything below 40mm seems slightly feminine to me.

I have seen oversized watches, (more than 42mm), on a fair number of guys. It always seems to me that they are unsure of something about themselves and are posing with this piece of hardware instead of just wearing a watch. It's not a look I would want.

Nope! In fact I opted for the original DJ over the larger DJ II.

Its all relative. When I wear my DJ for a while then put on the sub, the sub feels huge by comparison. Likewise my Breitling is a veritable monster. I must admit I like the classic 36mm of the DJ even tho I have big wrists. Its somehow more refined

Men used to wear ties that were about half a foot wide. We got over it. We'll also get over the manhole-size watch craze, and the 36 to 40 mm Rolex watches will look just fine, once again.

36-40 is a great size for me. The trend is larger and it looks like the trend is here to stay. But for me 36-40 is in the zone. Guess I'm not very trendy.

No, Rolex are not too small.
Panerai are too big. Can't wait till this oversized watch fad dies. |

I like larger size watches, but only on occasion and not for regular wear. I have a number of watches larger than 42mm, the largest being a 48mm flieger, which I can wear for an evening out, but then it gets too "in the way" and definately not practical for work wear.
Smaller than 36mm looks a bit too small on my wrist..... Bottom line is that 36-40mm is the ideal "all round" size for comfort, practicality and continuous wear. While it is on your wrist with some presence, you are not aware of it all the time. Have a great day all and .... merry Christmas |

Even my 36mm DJ is perfect. All my Rolex are too nice to feel small.

Have you tried the Datejust II?
At 41mm it wears nice. I always admired the 36mm DJ but was just too small for my tastes. 39 - 42mm seems to work perfectly for me.
I've owned many Panerai as well but I think the size is what always made me sell. But PAMS are supposed to be big, so Its just a matter of personal taste. |

Rolex are just the "right " size... The PAM 44 or 47 cases are just the right size...
Each high end manufacturer finds, dwells and prospers in their own niche... you either like it or you don't. I don't think that the "large" watch is going to go the way of the dodo bird any time soon at all. Personally, I like my Rolex, Panerai, IWC and Patek, all different sizes...equally. I can't imagine a 47 case on a Rolex... |

40mm is perfect; anything larger looks too gangsta/stupid.

I have a sub that I wear on and of for the past twenty years. When I got it it was considered larger. I have a IWC 18k dress watch that is about 33mm and thin as paper that was inherited. About a year ago I purchased a PAM 111 and thought the rolex was small.
The truth of the matter is this the IWC I thought looked like a kids watch but the size is really pretty good. The PAM at 44mm is really a joke. The 40mm sub and the new GMT IIc maxi case is perfect. Its all perception but the truth is the Rolex offers perfect comfort. Than I got to think that the manual wind IWC engineering and eligance is something. Whats going on in the PAM thats 44mm 16mm high case.... nothing. Now the DSSD is a hand cuff thats out of balance. |

Been wearing my YMII monster and when I wore my WG Daytona, it felt like it never existed on my wrist. Even when I wore a WG Daytona with bracelet it still felt small.

This one is not too small for me, and at 34mm, it's the smallest modern men's Rolex. For my size and taste, 34mm-36mm is perfect for a dress watch, and 40-42mm are perfect for a sport watch. I'm 5'7" with a 7.5" wrist.

My 34mm and 41mm watches are perfect for me. I don't quite get the trend of wearing a big hubcap on one's wrist. It makes me think that the wearer might be compensating for some...shall we say, shortcoming.

Practicability surely has to enter the discussion somewhere. If you have a large broad wrist then you will 'carry' a bigger watch with ease. A large watch flopping around on a smaller wrist is a bit of a nuisance (IMHO) and falls into the category of jewellery - like a big chunky bracelet - and can be a hazard in day to day life.

i use to think and feel that Rolex at 40 mm was just way too small. till i saw the new subc. previously all the watches i owned were 44 and up. now everything i own is no larger than 44. but for an all around everyday/occasion watch the 40mm subc is perfect!
so on that note....no i dont think that Rolex's are too small. and this is coming from a former Rolex hater, now convert |

Rolex's too small?
My cousin got married and received a Curtis & Co watch as a gift. Her and her husband didn't want the watch and gave the watch to me. I don't really wear it as it's ridiculously big. Although, when I wear it it's always a conversation piece. Comments I received are, "That's like a saucer on your wrist." & "That's the biggest watch I've ever seen."
It dwarfs my Rolex's... Last edited by leerecords; 2 July 2011 at 03:47 PM.. Reason: Rotate Picture |
