I've gotten a few comments basically saying it is silly to pay that much for a watch that can go 2 miles deep because, in their words, "you're never going to go that deep."

A few options:
1) He lies and says he likes it when he doesn't making him a liar 2) He says something like "omg eww that watch is disgusting, how on earth could you buy it you weirdo" making him a huge tool 3) He politely expresses that it wasn't for him. I'm not a fan of the PO at all so someone with that watch telling me he didn't like mine would simply tell me we are two people with different tastes. |

I had a colleague at work who wears a Submariner comment that my DJII was too dressy. That's about it!

Turn it into a tongue-in-cheek comment to diffuse the situation and keep diplomatic business relations:
"Looks like we both have a taste for fine tea. But I'm so glad we have different tastes...that way we'll never fight over the same tea bag!" |

Yup heard it all before...old mans watch, fake, waste of money, why Rolex? there are better options out there, etc. Personally I think it is unnecessary hence have refrained on commenting negatively on peoples watch....your money your choice.

I don't think it was negative. Just being honest I guess.
I, for one, don't like AP or PP at all. Now, IWC, VC or JLC hold my attention. Breguet sport chronos too. Sometimes I feel like it's frowned upon not to like AP or PP. I make my statements with my money. I'll buy what I like. |

I see you are from UK - as far as I know in the UK this is an accepted comment.
Your watch is not 'my cup of tea' either. but all that means in UK and Canada is: Good for you, but not to my taste". If we all had the same taste, i'd be a boring planet. Sounds like an honest, up front bloke. Move on.

I note that this was said during a discussion about watches. Presumably the point of such a conversation is to express one's opinion. If I was specifically discussing watches with someone I might very well comment that a particular watch was not my cup of tea. I see no point in a conversation consisting of insincere expressions of mutual admiration.

I agree absolutely. I drive a small Japanese car and would have no problem with driving a Kia - it strikes me as a very good economic proposition.

My wife has a Kia and it was 40k that’s not a cheap car in my book, and it gets worse gas mileage than my Corvette.

Having read through this thread again, it is clear that "not my cup of tea" can be interpreted differently by different people.
I contend that it can be interpreted differently by the same person depending on how it was said. This is what I was trying to suggest in my earlier post. It can be said with rapport and respect, or it can be said with disdain and a roll of the eyes and a shake of the head. To me, that conveys completely different attitudes by the person who said it. Truth be told, I actually use the phrase quite a lot myself! Sorry if I'm ranting. If anything, I've enjoyed reading everyone's comments. |

Another omega hater of Rolex, what a surprise! Never the other way round btw. These omega owners are just plain envious IMHO. Personally I love both brands, currently really looking at getting a seamaster Montreal 1976 to go with the sub c

Again, it depends on the nature of the relationship.
If you know someone for a bit, politely expressing an opinion might be fine. But picture this: I meet a guy for the first time. He pulls up in an Aston Martin. Im a car enthusiast too, I pull up in my Porsche. He compliments me on my Porsche. Then, obviously excited to show me his Aston Martin, I say, well, I'm not really a fan of Aston Martin. I think id be something of an ass for saying that to a guy who's obviously proud of his car. There is such a thing as tact and diplomacy. I think it would have been better manners for him to say, hey, thats a beautiful watch too. Save the frank comments for a time when you know each other a little better. There's a time and place. For example. Here on the forum, guy works hard, saves his money and buys a blue 2 tone Sub. Truly not my cup of tea. :) But my god, why on earth would I go and post that in his thread? |

The "he's envious, jealous, cheap, can't afford, omega lover comments" are so disgusting it makes me feel sick being associated with the brand Rolex. I don't understand why so many here think just because you are wearing a Rolex means people should respect you, get on their knees and kiss your ass.
I love Rolex but I definitely don't love the superiority complex that comes with it. |

while that is a little bit strong, i have to admit that i pretty much agree with you. the jealous comments, IMHO, are pretty much out of line and out of whack with reality. as some of the mods say, many people just wear the brand. that is wherein the problem lies.

I think you guys are reading way into "not my cup of tea". It is just a comment. It could be said out of jealousy, envy or any other reason. When I see these mulitmillion dollar penthouses in Manhattan, I say the same "not my cup of tea.:. Maybe it is not his style - maybe he thinks of watches the way some think of cars -- get from point A to point B -- or to tell time.
Just because you are in love with your watch, doesn't mean the world has to appreciate it or do the same. Your reasons for having it are asvalid as his reasons for not having it. |

Yup,...I own many brands and contribute on other watch forums and this "My watch cost more so its better" mentality is what fuels the "Rolex hate" from other brands that are as good or even better, horologically speaking. Its juvenile, and pompous. Take a step back and look at these comments from a newbie point of view and it isnt flattering at all. I am all for the "Yay for the home team pride" but character, humility and graciousness should also shine through first and foremost.

That's not the case with any Rolex owner I know. It's the people who own other brands that seem to have the complex....then end up buying one after hating on them for years. Most Rolex owners like on this forum for instance like other brands like omega as well and don't go slagging them off but appreciate that they are great watches as well. But when an omega/tag owner shows off their watch and notices you got a Rolex on THEY seem to get the inferiority complex. Silly but that's the way it goes I suppose. |

Much to do about nothing IMHO & for what it's worth, maybe he just wasn't a fan of TT watches. Regardless, you bought it because YOU like it right?
To be honest, I find some of the replies in this thread far more asinine than "it's not my cup of tea". Man up & quit worrying about what others think. |
