Is the dress watch dead?

I think that in many circles there is no thought of what watch is worn with what outfit....but we all know better!

It depends on how you define dress watch. I think the traditional 35 mm hobnail Calatrava is dead, there is no appreciable market for them. Elegant watches on straps will never be dead however.

About the only time I get the chance to wear my dress watches are to Church and Lodge. I agree with the Watch Snob. People dress so poorly today how would anyone expect them to know what a true dress watch is anyway???

I have read some of the Watch Snob's articles. He is appropriately named. While having some accurate points, overall, I feel his world view is elitist.

I think it is a comedy personality personally. It is too over the top to be a real person's point of view. I bet a few people write it, not just one person. Also, there have been conflicting view points over the course of the articles that lead me to believe it is more than one person as well.

Maybe. At least two, perhaps more. There may be two main writers, but there may also be a team that sits around adding comedic things to the articles, sort of like how sitcoms are written.

I disagree.

It is rather the social norms that made a watch like the hobnail Calatrava a must-have in a gentleman's wardrobe that are dead or at least moribund.

There are still gentlemen in the world, just not so many as there once was and I'm not using the term gentleman as a synonym for a nice guy.

This watch would be more appropriate at a formal function than any watch in the Oyster line.

Man I need to think more....... I have a mix of sports watches and dress watches and I just seem to wear watches........ I don't put enough thinking to it. What has stunnned me in this thread is the comment I wear business casual, therefore I can wear as big a watch as I like.....I am business casual but that means a long sleeve shirt, and the bigger the watch on my wrist the more it is annoying with or without a jacket.

Wear what makes you happy and if you are unhappy with ALS or PP dress watches I will happily send you a G Shock or even my ever fashionable Tudor Chrono to replace it.

I find my dress watches on leather straps immeasurably more comfortable my only complaint is their lack of lume since I wear them at night and have no other clock radio.

I suspect small watches and big watches will all have their time again.

I honestly don't mind people who wear sports watches with suits, whether it's a Submariner, a PO, a ROO or anything like those. Provided that the watch fits him well I for one believe they look versatile enough to be worn with fancier attires.

Still, I am a man who's much more into dress watches than sporty ones and I actually do the opposide, I will wear a thin, small gold watch on a leather band with jeans and a t-shirt. Back in the days one would have one watch for all occasions and since most of the watches would be smaller it wouldn't be out of place to see something like that happening. I can understand following what fashion dictates to a certain point (though I'm not doing that myself, I'm pretty bad at following what's in and out...) but this is a point I have to disagree with.

The dress watch isn't dead, it's popular among a certain group of people and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Different strokes for different folks.

If you saw me wearing a suit, you would be wrong. My problem, is one that is probably shared amongst many in this group. When I consider the value proposition of purchasing a watch, as much as I would love to have a proper dress watch, since I rarely dress to that level, I wouldn't really get to wear it that much and I invariably opt for another sport watch. You can see from my signature that I own more than one watch but if I were wearing suit, I would definitely be wearing a sports watch.

Hopefully one day, I will be able to acquire a dress watch. Of course, having spent so much time here, it will have to be a JLC, PP, VC or ALS. Such is the danger of hanging out with the aficionados.

And yes, I do feel a bit out of sorts when I wear the Sub with a suit now. 10 years ago, it was just fine but you all have ruined me!
