All I can say about this thread is that I would never hire a person that have to ask what shoes to wear.

Well, that my friend, depends on wear one works :-) I certainly think a nice pair of high quality Oxfords in brown or burgendy (I'm preferential to brogue style) can go very well to a charcoal or grey suit in a daytime setting. When in doubt, the answer is always black.

Where is Fremstar when you need him?

I have always been amazed at how people wear a nice suit and then crappy shoes, regardless of the style.

I always see people wearing rubber soled Kenneth Coles with a suit in the courthouse. Unpolished at that.

Many many years ago, as I was starting my career, a female friends gave me a book (Gentleman's Guide or something like that) which explained the basics of dressing well and appropriately for any given situation. Invaluable. I highly recommend the OP find a similar resource.

Good point!

I'll never forget the day I called on the San Francisco Chronicle Newspaper with my California rep. I flew in from Toronto wearing a standard blue business suit, tie etc...

I get off the plane and my rep is wearing slacks and a Tommy Bahama shirt with loafers. He said "what's up with the suit" this is California...

Needless to say, I ditched the tie, slung my jacket over my shoulder and tried to look as casual as possible for the meeting.

In a word, no. In two words, no way.

Just my thoughts.

Can never predict what threads will just take off. I want to revise my opinion after further reflection to no only with a blazer.

Loafer, no socks, sleeve rolled up, unbuttoned shirt (at least two buttons undone), ray ban sunglasses, thick bling bling gold chain necklace, thick bling bling YG bracelet at one wrist and a 36mm YG DD with diamonds on the other and you be rolling my friend LOL

What's the problem with loafers and a suit? I'm more of a tassel guy on my loafers - & really enjoy Johnston Murphy. Wear them with a suit all the time.

Go for it.

Since this is all about personal opinion an all - I would definitely not wear loafers with a suit.

I'm pretty picky about dress footwear though.

For the past few years I've been on this monk strap thing (except for formal wear)

David Letterman does it every night; with light colored socks nontheless. But that's David Letterman. The rest of us mortals need a cap toed oxford or a wing tip shoe with a suit.

Yeah, especially the white socks make me cringe. But hey, that's show business. He's an entertainer just going for a signature look. And let's keep in mind the people he is trying to impress are pretty much all wearing pajamas.

But it does illustrate the point that when you are the guy in the corner office you have a little more leeway. I believe it was Lee Iacocca that popularized the contrasting power collar when he was CEO of Chrysler.

Any loafers that will work well with a suit have to have most of the same attributes as your dress "tie" shoes. Same materials, same construction, same colors, etc., so when you stand and your cuffs are in place, they look almost like the tie shoes. There are loafers that look like this, but more casual loafers don't work, IMO.

Yes loafers are always okay with the suit. I don't know who stated that shoes with laces must be worn with a suit.

For what it's worth, this is excerpted from "The Style Guy," Gentlemen's Quarterly Magazine:

Suits with loafers

Q: Suits with loafers: yea or nay? I see established professionals my father’s age doing it all the time in D.C.

A: D.C. seems to have a thing for loafers, from penny loafers to tassel loafers. For some reason, many men in their forties, fifties and sixties seem to think that loafers and button-down oxford-cloth shirts are appropriate business wear. Penny loafers are casual. Tassel loafers and Guccis with buckles are a bit dressier—they’re sport-jacket wear. I think the right slip-on can look fairly dressed up, but when you’re going for a formal business look there is no substitute for tie shoes. When Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev reportedly pounded the desk with his shoe at the United Nations, it was undoubtedly a lace-up shoe! Somebody tell our loafer-wearing president.

Here's another one, same source:

When to wear loafers

Q: I have a beautiful pair of tasseled loafers, and I’m wondering if I can wear them with a suit to work. Or are tassels too casual for business attire?

A: Tasseled loafers are casualwear, but because of their northeastern-preppy heritage, they’re widely assumed to convey class; hence they’re perceived as dressy. So unless you have sartorial true believers among your colleagues, you probably won’t get called on the tassels. Personally, I wouldn’t wear loafers with a business suit. I might wear Belgian slippers with a seersucker suit on the weekend, but I think serious business calls for a formality that loafers lack. Loafers are for loafing.

You could probably find as many arguments "for" as "against" on the topic, though.
