I love the entire buying experience. The game is entertaining. For both the dealership and me. And in the end, I get what I want, they get what they want... And everyone walks away happy. My best experiences so far are with Land Rover.

But if you try going into a ad and haggling with them saying I know that invoice is $7400 on that Daytona so I wanna pay $7300 and see how fast that ad throws you out.. Are salesman at your ad a bunch of crooks if they are making $5k on you on a 12k watch?
You guys allow your ad to make $5k on a watch that cost $12k but when a car dealer tries to make $5k on you on a car that cost $60-$70 grand then they are a bunch of crooks?
It is the customers like you guys in this thread that are the crooks, you want top dollar for you old trade in that needs 4 new tires and 120,000 miles and want the new car for thousands under invoice and then call the dealer a crook when you don't get it...

Why would you haggle on a $7400 daytona. And if this price wasn't crazy enough, why would you be thrown out of a store for asking for like 1% off?

It's not a scam but a way to get you into the dealer and in need of a new car.

For years, I received letters in the mail for my Range Rover. It's funny because they try to make these letters look personal...It wasn't until I called the dealer to remind them that I lemoned it and did the repurchase inspection at their dealer that the letters finally stopped.

That's not true from my experience; I've bought multiple cars at asking price. I still get upsold crap, the process takes forever, and they try to convince me to trade in my other car. Frankly, the way you so dismissively generalize about your customers being so moronic doesn't help your argument about car dealers being good folk.

He's saying that's what the dealer pays, and they wouldn't appreciate being offered less than cost.

Try justifying that argument to a working stiff who's just trying to put his family in a reliable new car or minivan with a warranty vs a team of sharks trying to seperate him from as much money as possible over the next 5 years.

I always remind my customers that we are both coming from the same place:
The commission paid sales man is trying to make as much as possible for him and his family
And
The customer is trying to save as much as possible for him and his family

What is so hard about buying a car and it's process? If you find a better deal, just go buy it where you found it. If you can pay cash, just do it. If you have better financing lined up, great just go with your bank. How hard is that?

A car is most people's second biggest purchase but for some reason a lot of folks don't think it justifies any research.
I do my due diligence, compare deals, and scratch off anyone who tries to bullshit me or who clearly is not willing to make an effort to get my business.
I'm not interested in squeezing the last dollar out of them, we all have to make a living, but I want a fair deal AND I want to know it is a fair deal.
I find that the biggest challenge is to buy with my brain not my heart.

BS?

Just to keep this alive, I'll tell the tale of a Porsche salesman who told me with a straight face that my one year old boxster wasn't worth that much because it had "low mileage" at the time it had about 8k on it. And a brand new engine under warranty at 5k. He told me the car was built to be driven and there may be damage to the seals etc for lack of use / mileage.

Now after you stop laughing, I'll tell you this is a true story.

But I love him because he has a family to feed and a saint of a mother.

So when you went for a test drive in one of their new cars, did you drive it like it was "meant to be driven?"

After all, you wouldn't want to risk damaging the seals!

This...and to add, as long as both parties are respectful during the negotiation process, there's no foul if a middle ground can't be reached. All parties have their agenda to meet.

In my experiences, I never faulted a salesperson for trying to get me to buy something extra, and I hope she/he didn't fault me for being an educated buyer and attempting to negotiate everything. I do understand that the negotiation process is stressful for some people, though. Perhaps my opinion would be different if I wasn't as assertive as I am.
