But how to square that old school rule with the rise of the smartphone? I will be that most have an iPhone or whatever tucked away somewhere when in formal attire. We've become so dependent on them...

And every smartphone has a clock.

So, if it's not a social misstep to have a phone, I suspect it's no longer a social misstep to wear a watch...

Old thread...wonder how the evening went, and which watch was chosen.

Sometimes it's fun to follow the "rules" precisely...and sometimes it's fun to at least fracture them a bit. The key is to fracture them intentionally, not out of ignorance.

I'd guess you won't get black balled for wearing a Sub. A G-shock, on the other hand, why some things just aren't done. That's like listening to the Beatles without ear muffs, as Bond said in "Goldfinger"...

I wear a watch and carry a phone at all occasions, so you are preaching to the choir. I was just pointing out that if someone really wants to follow traditional etiquette they shouldn't be wearing any watches with a tuxedo. Even a simple thin watch isn't traditionally appropriate in those kinds of circumstances. Personally, I don't think 99.99999% of people care nowadays.

I will say one thing, I don't understand people wearing ugly black plastic digital watches with expensive suits. It is such a contradiction in style. Why waste all the effort in buying and wearing a nice suit only to ruin the look with an ugly watch on the wrist. Seriously, you don't even have to spend a lot. Buy a simple Fossil watch instead to wear with the suit for $50 to $100.

This piece is like $70 and would be worlds better than the watches above with a suit IMO:

"Traditionally, visible timepieces are not worn with formal evening dress, because timekeeping is not considered a priority.” Pocket watches are however acceptable.......

But I would imagine that when these so called "rules" were prevalent, arriving in a horse and carriage was also deemed to be the height of fashion..............
