Is it safe (In Chicago)?

Okay these posts are reaching troll level frequency. I understand people being concerned about wearing around something expensive, so either insure it, deal with it, or leave it at home. Also, if you feel like you are in a bad area or situation, you can always throw it in your pocket until you feel more comfortable.

Life is too short for this kind of stress.

I don't believe Vikings come from Suomi. And I know that in that case, size does matter. Just ask the bears next door what happened when they picked on their little neighbor in 1939/40. BTW, Lauri Torni is a hero of mine!

Interesting that you know about Törni. He was a BA.

I'm one of the Swedish speaking Finns, so my blood is probably well-stained of Viking blood.

Fine to wear anywhere, just not in the CTA system or the Southside.

I've been going to Chicago at least once a year for the past 15 or so years, both summer and winter. I used to go for an annual recruiting session and stayed for many years at the Marriott Suite O'Hare. I would take the CTA trains into downtown from there, often at night. I wear my Y-series GMT all the time and never give it a thought. I've also taken buses around the city and have never had a problem.

While in Chicago, you may want to try one of Rick Bayless's restaurants, such as Frontera Grill or Topolabampo (next door). For a great steak in an old time Chicago atmosphere, try Gibson's. I've got lots of other food suggestions. PM me if you want more and let me know where you'll be staying and possibly your age and how much can spend on meals.

I totally understand where the OP is coming from having not been there and having cities like Columbus, Cincinatti, Dayton, and Cleveland to compare to. There are areas in each of those towns where I wouldn't feel good wearing a Rolex. Chicago is quite a bit larger than any of the previously mentioned towns.

I'm not a resident of Chicago but I do live in the metro Detroit area and being a life long resident here there are certain parts of Detroit that wearing a Rolex may attract certain unwanted attention. But I find it true that being aware of your surroundings at all times is the key. I think as long as your not being over flashy that it will fly under the radar. But as with any situation if you look like your out of your element or are looking for "trouble" you will usually find it. As far as wearing a Rolex in Chicago, I actually feel safer wearing one there than in my own town. I love the Rolex store on Michigan Ave. I enjoy walking down the Ave on a nice summer day with a short sleeve shirt on with my wife wearing my Sub or one of my many DJ's and I feel at total ease. Just my two cents.

I am surprised very few people today know who Torni is in the US outside of US Special Forces.

Agreed!
Fact : wearing a Rolex will increase risk
Fact : the risk is slight

I have been robbed of my watch in London , at noon , hundreds of people around - unlucky but it happened. These glib remarks about the risks are very brave...on a forum. I hope your bravado is never tested. Wear it , enjoy but be aware.

Never heard of Patek until I joined this forum; they are a tightly held secret from the rest of the world.
