I'm interested to see how the Royal Oak looks on your wrist as I'm comparing it to what I could wear at 16 and I'm thinking it must look big.

More power to you! I would never in a million years allow my kid to have such a watch at 16 though. That's just me..

Congrats on the watch. It's your birthday gift. The person who gave it to you must think you deserve it. So wear it whenever you please. Like some said here, you can wear it on special event, dinner, weekend or sometimes during the weekday. Good that you start early. You are lucky to have nice watch when you are 16. I would love that too :)

Good for you now wear it and enjoy it and who cares what anyone says or thinks! 99.9% of all 16 year olds would have no clue of what an AP actually is.

They're your watches. Wear them. That's all they're good for.

I work for my stuff, and you damn well better believe that my kids will, too. Sure, I've bought my son a G-Shock or two for his birthday/Christmas, but he's just gonna have to wait until he's earned the money on his own before he gets an AP.

Rolexes? Christ, when did those start rolling in?

I give the kid credit for having the self awareness to ask if wearing a high end time piece might draw unwanted attention at his age. That seems to be missing from a lot of well off kids these days (see rich kids of instagram, snapchat, etc).

I like the idea of wearing it on special occasions for a few years...that will only add his appreciation of the watch.

hey Noah S,

yes, its not normal to own one at 16 because of the hefty price that comes with it however since you're lucky your parents got you one, the best thing you could do is to appreciate and take care of it.

wear it in good health but don't let luxury things that come easy take over your mind. don't stress about what others who say you haven't earned it etc, because not everyone carries the same luck so too bad for them.

cheers!

Not remotely. He asked a question and I answered it. I give him credit for accepting my opinion like a man, but that doesn't change how I feel about children being spoiled with over-the-top gifts that they haven't earned. The amount of wealth one grows up with is irrelevant, IMO.

Well, he owns the watch whether you like it or not and insofar as it is his watch he may choose to wear or not to wear the watch as he so desires, as long as it's okay with his parents.

What the OP did not ask for was an opinion on rearing children, which is the subject you seem to be fixated on.

It's too late. Whether you call it spoiled or privileged, the watch is his.

KyleL was wearing Rolex and Omega watches at an early age and he seems to have turned out okay.

Yes, it is (clearly) inappropriate

Congratulations also from my side.
Nonetheless, I entirely agree with Adam ("Craniotes").
At the age of 16, getting/wearing such a watch is inappropriate, irrespective of cultural values or environment you are in. It has nothing to do with your age per se (or better, your lack thereof) but rather with the fact that in such a short life time you did not have the time yet to prove that you earn it.
By the way, you do not seem to be snobbish or spoiled at all. I rather think that your parents have a (to put it diplomatically) peculiar style of showing appreciation to you.

The question is why would a 16 yr old want to wear a AP?? I doubt his peers will even notice.. In fact I would be the first to make fun of him .... Act your age! I would never let my 16 yr old wear one.... And I can afford it, fastest way to ruining a kid....what's the hurry ?

The answer to your question is yes, a 16 year old can wear an AP.

I was interested to see how it looked and it looks good Noah.

Judging from your posts I am sure you will know when and when not to wear it.

Judging from Adams posts he doesn't know when and when not to let go.

That said, as a young man he can learn to treat nice things well. And let's be honest, you may love your g shock but is that something to hang onto for a lifetime then pass on to your son?
why not own something of value, wear it conscientiously and pass it on to your child in the future? Many great memories and milestones lie ahead for a 16 year old young man. Might as well have something to create memories with.

Let's be honest, most would see a Rolex as far more ostentatious by virtue of the general public knowing what a Rolex is (and the clueless and often over exaggerated price people think a Rolex costs). If you don't know what an AP is, you couldn't tell it apart to any other watch you've never heard of.
Very good post but does really not fit here. Nothing has been passed on here, it is a 15400 which the father could not have worn for years ....

I thought he was referring to the OP taking good care of it over the coming years then when he has his own family passing it down to his own son some day.

I'm in the minority, but it seems a bit decadent for a child to wear such an expensive time piece.

Again, he asked a question and I answered it. Given that Noah wasn't satisfied with the simple "no" in the post that preceded mine, I explained exactly why I disagreed with a child receiving such an expensive gift. I'm not sure why this is cause for consternation on your part, but I'll leave you to grapple with that issue on your own.

Adam

There is no consternation on my part.

Yes... I'm aware nothing was being passed onto anyone, but was saying that through having nice things, you can take care of nice things. And in turn you can do something similar for your own kin down the road.

I received a very nice watch at 16 but I don't think it made me any better or worse of a human being.

At the end of the day, it's just a watch. What value it has or doesn't have is entirely in the eye of the beholder. He may be the 16 year old son of a sheik... (He says his family wealth is modest so most likely not... Don't take me literally) but again, it's all relative. Who cares. If he likes it and knows when it's appropriate to wear it, power to him. I won't put him down for being gifted a watch. His parents must be extremely thoughtful people with particularly good taste in haute horology
