I don't think using the words "white trash" in your post is going to be helpful in your quest for an answer...just sayin'.

No. It's just unfortunately the prefered choice of affluent white trash. Much like the Sub is coveted by the proliferative dBag.

I think the 1980s killed two tone for a lot of people. As a child of that decade, it seemed like every car salesman, low-grade real estate agent driving a leased BMW 3 series, and scruffy TV cop...the minute they got a bit of money went out and got themselves a two tone Datejust. I honestly believe that has, to this day, soured a good percentage of the population on the whole two tone aesthetic. Personally, I have been looking at a two tone Turnograph for months and still sometimes say to myself "Shit, I hope no one hums the Miami Vice theme song when they see me wearing this". It's a bit like when you are wearing a fedora (or really just a hat) of any sort and people insist on making Indiana Jones comments....you know you are a style God, but it's still damn annoying.

Swaggy is just stirring the pot. People love an outrageous thread.
TT is so popular because it just looks so damn good - at least the way Rolex do it.
I wouldn't mind a gold Blue Sub but my TT DJ is certainly not a substitute for a President.

You had me until the last bit.

Anyone wearing a fedora who is under the age of of seventy or not on stage doing a song and dance number looks like a fool. Sorry.

It's nice that you apologized, because that was a pretty dumb statement.

You don't really see that many proper hats on people these days, but the short-brimmed fedora made a fashion comeback quite recently among both young men and young women.

It's not so much what you wear, as how you wear it.

I find TT much nicer aesthetically than full gold. I find full gold watches are too loud for my taste. I don't think i've ever associated a TT watch with white trash. I usually reserve that for watches with case width around 50mm.

Well, I did say the situations were "A BIT" similar....not identical. The fedora became, at least partially due to Indiana Jones and partially due to the 1960s generally, a "costume" in modern times. The TT Datejust isn't quite to that point, but it is/was getting there particularly in the 80s and 90s.

Just because you're young doesn't mean you're stylish.
Have you seen some of the stuff kids are wearing these days?

Fedoras have seen their day, now they are either kitsch or fad..

From TT watches being white trash, to an argument over whether or not fedoras are fashionable. Man, you can tell it was a boring Basel year.

With the development of maturity and hopefully a little wisdom, the significance of 'fashion' as any sort of measure of a person should be in steady decline.
Particularly when the parameters of that assessment are defined by cheesy populist movies and Television programs.
Think for yourself.

No one has looked good in a fedora or a Panama hat since the 1950s. It's not their fault*, it's just that the modern scenery and background is all wrong.

*unless worn with socks and sandles or shorts.

[QUOTE=Ruud Van Driver;5702903]Most sensible post on this thread

I pray that he does

I don't have a gold Rolex. Can I afford one? Yes. Would I buy one? No. Gold doesn't suit me, I don't wear it well at all and a gold Rolex would be too heavy for what I'm comfortable with. Apart from that, I have a shaved head, tattoos and a bull terrier. A gold watch would have me looking like a drug dealer.

Ha ha - likewise re the bald head and tattoos! And to make it work, I'm a little tanned!! I'd never get through an airport without the need for lube if I wore a gold watch!

An all gold FAKE rolex daydate (or any model) is white trash IMO.

Chaps

Rolex is a relatively expensive watch and it tends to attract two types of customer.

The first type are by nature discreet and will go for SS. They even baulk at PCL's because of the inherent bling factor.

Then you get the louder element who like their bling and TT and heavy gold bracelets.

Unfortunately both of these people have totally different mind sets and being in the first category, I find TT and large gold watches vulgar.

Hence this question will go on for ever.

Regards

Mick

Isn't an all-gold watch just a paupers Platinum watch????

They are for supremely wealthy people who 'like to be understated'!!

I'm thoroughly enjoying this thread. It's brilliant. I can't decide which responses are amusing me more - those showing a sense of humour - or those showing utter disdain!

P.S. Rolex is obviously just a poor mans Lange, no matter the metal!

More than a bit of truth in that humor! There are certainly people, and probably some posting here, for whom an all Gold GMT or Sub is "amateur hour" when it comes to watch spending. Just as there are people who might buy a new Benz on a whim (and with cash) just as a weekend driver stored at their vacation home, there are those who see Rolex in general as horologically quaint and decidedly "upper middle class". Does that make the whole brand "white trash"....well, that all depends on one's perspective I suppose. Frankly, I have always liked my "new money" purchases over the years. :)

Converse to the above, the wealthiest guy I know (and who earned every bit of it) still wears his Dad's stainless Omega from the 1940s. I doubt VERY seriously if he owns another watch. I also doubt he has ever bought a new car (he hates depreciation) and I know he bought his current home (must be worth a cool million or more these days) at a bankruptcy auction 25 years ago...and effectively paid an apple and an egg for it.
