Agree. These were real people, doing cool, stuff. Hey, it's marketing, and Rolex knew what they are doing, but some how....

Fascinating!

Would love to see this contrasted with the current Rolex ads.

It might be harder now to pull off these kind of testimonials because explorers are more reliant on modern technology than mechanical timepieces. I thought it was somewhat strange that James Cameron strapped a watch to the outside of his submersible. Cool for the watch, but a bit gimmicky.

Agree.

Back in the day. Guys wore these watches as you said. No iPhones, no external rubbish.

The sea dweller came with dive tables!

Cameron and the deep sea, different era.

Totally agree - I think the earlier four of five digit serial sports look better - tried most of the newer ones and apart from the SubC, flipped them all! Just too 'shiney'!

Never been on an expedition, but my Explorer II held up well when I was a flight surgeon for a search and rescue helicopter squadron. As I've said before, you only do great threads...

Probably it's functionality with the 24h hand (useful when it's bright or dark all day at the poles) and date.

OP - great thread BTW.

Great ads! Thanks for posting OP and getting the ball rolling.

These ads make want to get an EXP II polar.

A wildlife expedition ad, with perhaps one of the rarest Rolex to ever make it to a print ad:
