It's a cultural thing for sure. Here in the UK wearing a gold watch is considered gaudy in a business environment. It's a stereotypical dodgy used car sales man image. Having a gold Rolex is flaunting your wealth and just doesn't project the right impression imo.
But this all depends on the context of what you do. If you're closing million dollar deals its all good. |

Here's the reality...we can say F what they think and let our character define us and not our appearance, but as they say, impressions/perception is a big part of the equation.
There are haters out there, and I for one don't like to make my life any harder but giving someone the wrong impression, and THEN showing them I'm a great guy who does great work...especially if it happens to be your higher ups or clients you need to close... |

A lot of people consider owning a YG Rolex a substantial achievement in one's life. The problem at 21 is, that very very few people can think of merits you can have at that age, that they would agree on. That is why people will think you did not achieve that piece by your own work, but rather got an inheritance or something along those lines.
That is not a very favorable image to portray in a sales environment. When in sales you have to ask yourself; What is the impact wearing this watch has on my sales figures? Can I gain more business than I am risking to lose. I doubt this will work favorably on your numbers, and that is why personally, I would leave the YG for the weekends (women appreciate YG more than potential customers ), and buy an Explorer I for work. Not flashy, but recognized by WIS customers and shows you know your watches. |

My initial thought is it depends on what you are selling, what I mean is if you are totally confident and the product doesn't have any hint of being shady no worries. People can tell authenticity and if there is a hint of bs that watch can hurt you. But if it you at selling something good or even something that might help them make more money or want to trust Lou know your stuff confidence is paramount. And it can only help. I wouldn't be surprised is they are looking at it in awe having never seen one or trying to figure out if it's fake and you are schister. I prescribe to the idea that it's better to be a bit overdress rather than underdressed. If you earned it doing what you do them why stop now otherwise consider your client carefully and figure out what they are looking for.

I don't understand these arguments. I'm under 30 and have been eyeing the yg very hard recently to replace my ss version.
Wearing a 30k watch isn't as financially difficult as it seems. Take for example vehicles. Some of my under 30 year old friends have already spent (and lost due to depreciation) thousands buying new and trading a few vehicles. I have had my vehicles for years (it's paid off) and due to low miles it will give me years of service to come. Gold watch =30k spent. (But not lost completely) Flip 3 new vehicles in 6 years= lose 30k forever. Give me a PM watch over a new car every two years and I'm perfectly happy. |

It's important to remember that we are all in a bubble here. A very fortunate bubble, but a bubble nonetheless.
We enjoy seeing everyone's watches non stop on this forum, but this is far from reality. In my heart I want to say that the OP should wear whatever he likes and be proud if he's earned it, but that's not how 99% of the people around you will see it. Even if he doesn't flaunt it and is a humble and decent human being, people will make judgments and they are usually not the good kind. Most people will never be able to afford a rolex, especially a gold model. It's important to remember that and know who you are interacting with. We obviously don't know the OP and what he has done, but I think the vast majority of people who see a 21 year old with a gold rolex assume the worst. He may have been handed it, or he may be incredibly successful for his age. Most people will assume the former. As a note to the kinds of people around the age, none of them could even think of spending that much on a watch. Even young professionals who are fresh out of college or a professional school. Unless they come from wealthy families, they all have student loans. That's what most people assume. I would personally advise against it. Not because I have any real issues with the OP wearing it, but because of human nature and how it may affect his experience at work.

If you dress nice and have bespoke monogrammed shirts, I wouldn't think a Rolex is too far out of place. I would second that your personality, mannerisms, and business practices are going to be far more important than what watch you wear. The IT crowd, especially the high level enterprise guys, really wouldn't care about a watch. They are going to be more focused on technical aspects of the deal. |

Chaps
I held a senior position in Purchasing ( I am now retired) and was responsible for placing contracts worth millions. If I were to walk around the office wearing an expensive large chunky gold watch I would almost certainly be suspected of doing a dodgy deal or being on the take. It is usually better to dress down when in business and leave the dressing up to out of office hours. Regards Mick |

Absolutely not. Truthfully, most are going to look at someone so young with that watch and think a multitude of things.....
Horrible with money Trust fund baby Makes too much Flaunts too much Etc A gold Rolex of any sort is a bit of an ostentatious piece. I love them, but unless my name was on the door, there's no way I'd wear it. Just gives off the wrong vibe. |

I can't believe I'm reading comments over and over about how people will not buy from you because of the watch you wear.
If you're saying that and you're in sales your horrible salesperson change careers immediately. If you're saying that because you're a cheapskate and you would never buy something expensive for someone you would perceive that makes too much money doing their job there something wrong with you also. For the record people buy from people that they like people that they trust people that they respect. People buy from winners not losers. In a corporate world the guy that walks in cocksure and does not care about the deal and can get up and walk away is the one that always wins the deal at top dollar. Why? Because there is more business and when there is more business you have options. The guy that is desperate to do the deal and drop his pants and lower the price is the guy that never wins the deal. Customers can smell desperation. My customers are global fortune 100-500. That is not where their head is at. They respect success. The guy that cuts my hair always comments on the watch that I'm wearing and he tells me he does not wear his because customers don't like to see him wearing his Rolex they don't want him to be successful. I feel like that is the tone YOU are catching here from some guys. Do you cut hair or are you doing actual business? That's what I thought! Forget them and let them call you sir! Every work environment is different as is every Rolex owner. For me nobody can see what I wear and I rather like it that way. My watches are for me not others with exception of wrist shots here on TRF. I also wear French cuffs which cover watch anyway for the most part. So my watches are for me not others and I rather enjoy them and enjoy it that way. I think I have done ok in my career and have been wearing gold Rolex watches for close to 30 years now. So everyone is different as is every environment - do as you wish and do what is appropriate for you.

It would be interesting to hear 115 opinions from non-Rolex-enthusiasts.

Live your life in fear of what others might or might not think of you and conform to those thoughts. ^^^
