Just curious...why would someone showing off their passion and collection have someone tip toe/run for the door?

Do you think someone showing their car or comic books or a nice piece of art would get the same reaction?

I ask out of genuine curiosity. Is it specific to watches? Or do you feel this would illicit a similar reaction with a different type of "collection" or passion might be received in a warmer manner?

It's like investing in wine. If the market tanks you can always enjoy it with families and friends!
Congrats!

Hard to say Seth.

I ask because I'm curious to hear what your friends think of unworn watches - with the value of your pieces - sitting in a safe.

Whenever I talk to non-watch fiends about watches in general...I see eyes glaze over, hear the subject getting quickly changed or I get the oft discussed "you paid that much for a watch" type of comments.

To me, discussions about our passion with non-WIS are highly unfulfilling. I would think the safe queen discussion would generate other reactions - but since I don't have any I don't know for sure.

I think any esoteric hobby - ala the other you mentioned - might get active disinterest at worst or polite indifference at best as well.

So you're the one who got them.. Wow. Huge congrats. Can you carefully size them and wear inside the house on rare occasions just for a bit of fun? Anyway, well done.

so if their not an investment or collectible why did a new LV sell for $4500 a few years back and the one on Davidsw's site stickered just sell for $11500? I am just a simple guy so you high end investors keep your hedge funds and I will take a bunch of these and not pay any taxes on them.

That's my entire thought process. Now figure what it'll be worth in 20 years.

Personally I don't buy things I won't use. I bought a very pristine 14060M a few weeks ago. I was wearing it today while building new cabinets for my kitchen. I own sterling flatware that we use regularly, same for fine china, bespoke shotguns, nice pens, etc. I can't stand to own something that just sits. Use it, appreciate it, take care of it, and see it as money well spent on an item that you can hand down, an item with stories to tell, something that when the light grabs that scratch on the dial just under the crown it reminds you of the passion that you felt when you hit the door Knob carrying your wife over the threshold. That's the value I seek to gain, the kind that is sentimental and intrensic, and maybe one day, if you are really lucky, it will become a priceless heirloom!

Personally, I wouldn't invest in BNIB watches for several reasons that a few people here have already mentioned. My biggest reason would be the lack of buyers in the future. The newer generations are not fond of watches, trinkets, or mementos. There have been articles written on millennials shunning family heirlooms; second-hand stores are full of antique furniture that parents can't dump on their kids because this new generation only see value in computers and tech gadgets

Alot of kids today who would inherit a Rolex would likely sell it for the new Apple watch. There are exceptions, of course.

Lets put it this way. All investments have a risk
In your case
1. You will not lose money, esp long term
2. You are doing what you love and having fun along the way.
To me, its a no brainer, win-win
Congrats

I've only had them a day.

And I find it unlikely I'd ever open my safe to anyone for any reason. That of course doesn't include the better half and she loved seeing them. But she is a WIS in training.

My question to you was based on your response to another poster.

I think if I did try to show them to people, likely I'd get that glazed over look we talked about. But even to a WIS, what's to show really? It's just a watch with stickers on it. In 10 years that might be a different story. So we shall see what happens then.

In the meantime, I'm enjoying having them in there.

That's a risk that I don't worry about.

IF I ever even do sell them, the market for anything collectible is always cyclical.

And all that would be needed is one buyer. With the internet what it is, that would not be hard to find.

Yeah, we are exactly opposite in that regard. At least in this instance. I'm not overly sentimental about watches. In fact, I'm not really sentimental about anything. We are all here just for a short trip.

I'm much more interested in my relationships and experiences than my personal items. I don't really use items to remind me of moments.

Glad you're happy with your purchases.

Personally, I couldn't do it. I'd have to wear them and enjoy them. There's no way I'd be happy with these beauties collecting dust and potential value.

Well, I've kind of got the best of all worlds here. I've known from the start that I'll wear the explorer and I purchased a used LV. So I'm wearing that already.

While I love the 14060, it's never been at the top of my list. So it should be somewhat easy to keep it where it is.

Time will tell.

Buddy Seth!

The way I look at it, if house, cars and kids tuition are all covered. This is all splash the pot money you worked hard and earned so you can do what you want with it. You do it and it is fun for you and we are not talking about an extreme sum of money. If you want to wear one of those models, you just buy another one to wear.

I think it is great you are investing in this asset class and most importantly, it is FUN

Ok. My bad. I thought you had more. Agreed not much to show.

That would be odd indeed to open the safe at parties 😆

I never cared much for the LV...but they are growing on me. Love the maxi plot / old lug combo.

Enjoy!
