My 1980 one owner just arrived. I spent over an hour fitting the 78360/580 NOS band I bought for it. Not a fantastic photo given light, but this gives you a good idea... it's a totally honey and like many have said, the oyster bracelet is a perfect match.

I have been wearing the 1016 all weekend and it's a complete gem. One observation / question though that I wanted to ask about was that the 580 end links (like the band) are brand new and I needed a fair amount of muscle to get the pin into the lug holes. The upshot is that like the photo of Snoodle's watch, the outer ends of the 580 end link are sitting higher than the shoulders, and the leading edge of the 580 is pushed up very hard against the rehout.

If I close the 'c' shape of the end link, I will in effect move the pin alignment hole further away, thereby making the fitment even tighter.

Has anybody else had this issue, and what is the way the solve it such that the 580 end link sits more flush with the lugs?

After owning a 114270 for almost a year I could not resist and bit the bullet. I'm parting ways with my 114270 for the sake of chasing my long time desired grail, a late series 1016.

Found a full set from 1986, previous owner bought it in 1988, in Switzerland. Serieal 92xxxx and now it's with second owner. Untouched dial, though I think it has a flat plexi crystal inserted. Might be a service one.

Anyways, it's a bargain for me with trading in my watch. I'm so excited and sad at the same time. Spending the last day with my 114270 but, can't wait to attach this beauty on my hairy wrist haha.

We do the trade next week.

I wear with pride my 1016, I bought new from Zales of Truro Cornwall in1983. I too have all boxes swing tags, and booklets to accompany the watch. I recently purchased a Everest brown leather strap to give it a different look from the oyster bracelet, and the jubilee bracelet, which I bought in 1984 ( for 84 uk pounds I still have the receipt) I change the bracelets, a couple of times a year. Presently, the 1016 is in it's box and hiding in a draw as I fancied a change and treated myself to an Oysterdate Turn o graph on a white dial, a complete contrast from the black dial of the 1016. I think I will keep the ToG as my everyday watch, and bring the 1016 out, to make a special occasion even more special. The 1016 has only been serviced by Rolex,, and at the last service they changed the plexi glass for a glass which is not as domed, more flat which is not as nice as the domed. I have seen the domed glasses for sale on eBay, but these are more money than I paid for the watch so I won't bother. I am new to the forum and will post some photos when i have learnt how, I will need a new camera first as mine still takes 35 mm film!

This is the one on sale over at OF - as is noted in the sales post, looks like sub hands. The crystal has a high bevel so I'm thinking it's a service crystal. See the earlier posts on this thread.

Also, as this is a thread not made to valuate watches but rather post a collection of 1016's for members to reference, here is my first owner 1962 variation with serial 901xxx. Hands look to be later 1960's hands with tritium. Luckily they match perfectly.

I also have the similar question to OP. Given that the general consensus is that his version of the dial is likely to be original (X of Rolex aligning with T of Perpetual), can it be concluded that the other version (X of Rolex aligning with U of Perpetual) is service replacement or redial? What is noticed is that the latter seems to be similar to that of the 5500 Airking Explorer.

Appreciate views from the experts here.

My hacking 1016 has the same dial as the OP's, as can be demonstrated here:



Note the same two "E"s in "EXPLORER" with their high, horizontal mid-stroke and the proximity of the letters "PLO". There are similar dials in this thread where the coronet may lead you to think they are the same, but the word "EXPLORER" proves otherwise.

Mine is an 8-million case number and was bought from former UK main agent William Pyke & Son in 1986. The case number I know to be from 1984.

Importantly, I can confirm that there are no Rolex UK service marks inside the case back of my watch. I think it most unlikely that the watch would have received a service dial without going back for a full service and believe that this dial is original to the watch.

I have identified a number of watches in the 8-9million range, all of which have this version of the dial with the high-stroke "E"s in Explorer. It is inconceivable that all these exemplars have had service dials fitted, so I would be satisfied that this exact dial is correct and original for the period.

It's amazing how the text on the dials keeps moving around. On my 1972 1016, the L in EXPLORER almost lines up with the right edge of the R in OYSTER.

Not sure why there hasn't been any activity since May but it is time to hopefully get this topic going again. I have been wearing my 1966 Explorer with a kevlar band for years and finally got a 1966 dated Rolex oyster bracelet no. 7206 with 58 ends to match. Such a great watch!
