Man how I would love to hear that guitar

It looks very similar to the guitar used in the Skynard song I've YouTubed above

Ok, I've been ruminating on this and... concerning Les Paul vs Strat, no contest. The argument has two halves though. The actual construction of the guitar and what the artist can do with it. If I were to rate which is 'better' just based on the quality of materials and construction, Les Paul hands down. Gibson brought forward many features and methods used in lutherie for centuries when they designed the Les Paul. Things like tenoned neck joint, headstock break angle, edge bindings, curved top, etc. Especially the LP Custom, the little appointments like the bound headstock, fingerboard, back binding are all niceties that add up to a more refined and cultured product, IMO. In terms of construction alone, I would have to say the Les Paul is the runaway winner. I won't even talk about bridge designs. That's another topic.

As far as what each instrument is capable of in the right hands, there is no winner. Each sound different and have a character of their own. Thinking about it, if Jimmy Hendrix played a Gibson (don't shoot me), he'd still be every bit as good as he was and the same legend today, IMO. It's the player, not the axe...

Hendrix did play a Gibson at times, wasn't his Flying V a Gibson.

I'm not making any judgments and I don't know crap, but I like them all, is that a crime

Could have been... I am just used to associating him with his signature Strat. With guys like him, it's the whole package. It was his skill and passion joined into one. I love it when the results are greater than the sum of the parts...

both. I thought I had it all with my Strat (play mostly SRV stuff), then I got my LP and I'm in heaven. Like others have said...do yourself a favor and whichever you get, please get a nice tube amp so you get a decent tone. I run through a Marshall Vintage Modern and it's the best amp I've ever had.

How can one pick? They are both great. When I think of a Strat, I think of David Gilmour, and with the Les Paul, I think of Jimmy Page's 1958 and 1959 Les Pauls. Both are great, just different.

Yeah, and SRV played a Gibson LP too. Tone is in the Hands not the guitar.

Bingo! I think you've hit the nail on the head. The Gibson Les Paul is a fine example of guitar design and construction. The Fender Stratocaster is more like the AK-47 of guitars. Because of its simplicity of design, low tech production and sheer ergonomics it has allowed millions of players to learn to play the guitar. Most of the guitar heroes have played Stratocasters or other similarly shaped guitars because they are so much easier to play. As a Strat owner/player, I also concede that they can't hold a candle to the LP in sustain and overall tone. With my Lace Sensor pickups cranked up for a midrange boost, I can almost approximate the thick midrange of an out-of-the-box LP. Even my idol Eric Clapton laid down most of his best examples of tone with a Les Paul or ES 335. (Everything with the Bluesbreakers and Cream for example). The best choice for any guitar player is to own BOTH!

Anyone thinks a Les Paul can't get a good blues tone, just look at what a Vintage Fender Twin Reverb sounds like with the LP plugged into it.

Good point about the tube amps. That Marshall Vintage/Modern is reputedly an awesome amp, I want one. Enjoy yours

Lol-x, you would not ever want to have another amp. If your like me and like to play old school and tweak controls on your guitar ala your volume and tone knobs, you would love it. Best amp I've ever had hands down. I would put it heads up with any amp out there.

Hah, speaking of Marshalls... I played and got paid for 20 years or so. In the course of that, I spent quite a few looking for the 'perfect' amp. One day I wandered into my usual music store and he had a beat up old 100 watt Marshall Head sitting there. I had tried everything else, why not. I took it out to the gig that night and life changed. This amp had character and tone that had weight, punch and authority yet was sweet and not harsh. I fell in love immediately. I still have that thing and it still works fine... eye candy it's not. I date it to around the late '60s. Nothing like those good old EL34/6CA7+12AX7 amps. Classic, proven combo.

Jimmy played a Gibson and he didn't dare burn it unlike the Strat!

Yeah, EL34's are the standard Marshall now...but man, the Vintage Modern comes with KT66's so you get a much thicker tone with vintage breakup.

Ippon (and you can put your first name in your profile if you wish) is that a Marshall 2266C Vintage/Modern?

I've got an AVT20 with a tube pre-amp. It's all I need, but the Vintage Modern is the coota.

That's a great story Pat, kind of analogous to finding a vintage Sub in a pawn brokers.

Lol-x, yup it's a 2266C. I only needed 50 watts and the combo has a tighter bass feel to it with the closed back. I get all tones from SRV, Slash, Jimmy Page, Hendrix, and anything in between. The amp is very sensitive to pic attack and gear that's plugged into it. I only use a ds-1 and a cry baby plugged straight into the front and I really don't need anything else. My suggestion, get one and I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

I choose the rare skylark guitar made by the matsumoku corp. for one year alone,I own all three models of that line and the blue skylark sounds better than a rickenbacker and a gibson together!!they came from the factory with dimarzio pick-ups and man alive, that is one hot guitar!!

Huh, what did you say??? I can't hear you because I've lost about 60% of it in one ear. I'm less of a thrasher than well, one. I love rock, it's my mainstay but I sure can appreciate someone who can do what this guy does. KT66, eh... Great

Actually, I'm semi in the market for an amp. The 100w is way too much in today's environment. I used to run it through a couple K series JBL's and they were an efficient speaker. Loud wasn't a problem. I'd be looking more at the 35w-65w range nowadays.

Well, the combo is only 50 watts...loud yes, but manageable at bedroom level too. Dr.Z makes a helluva amp too, I just sold my MAZ after I got my VM. And if I were you I would not get rid of your marshall, it may be ugly...but it's what's inside that counts and it sounds like you may have yourself a plexi. I dunno, if you were to ask me 10 years ago...I would've said either a bogner or a mesa was my dream amp but I have seen the light and it's all about the tone not the gain for me now.

Steve, funny you have Skylarks...About 2 years ago I was in my local vintage shop and the owner is a huge Rickenbacher/Beatles fan (he actually sold the Ric to Tom Petty so he could play it during the Superbowl this last year) and he had a skylark on the wall. I played it through a silver jubilee halfstack and was blown away. I believe he ended up keeping it for himself.

Good point Richard, but Fender do make some or a number of their models with a rosewood fingerboard option.

Somehow the tone from rosewood is more to my liking than maple.
