Talk me out of this please - New vs. Preowned
gents, I just picked up a Platona pre owned from a reputable watch dealer and it is 2 years old and mint, but I am used to buying new from an AD for all my watches and this is only my second or third preowned. I am so wishy washy on the purchase of this caliber watch used that I am looking at selling and taking a slight loss and then buying new from an AD at a 25% discount for a brand new one direct from Rolex. What are the differences and should I just stick with this mint preowned and call it a day? I am just not an expert when it comes to used and I always have in the back of my mind it was tampered with etc even though it is probably fine and came from trusted sellers.

Keep it, save the money. You take off the stickers off the new and wear a couple times....it's the same as the mint one you got.

I'd just keep it. No reason to lose money on it if the pre owned watch really is mint.

If this is due to the fact you are having some reservation about the authenticity of the watch or its pedigree, you'd best get the matter settled immediately. Otherwise, it will always eat at you and, if there ever is a problem, your trusted seller may be long gone. |

good advice. I have done my research on the seller, been around since 1993, storefront, picked up from an AD in France, reputable, been around since the 1800s etc. etc. Just me I guess, making sure this beauty is the real deal since it was such a great deal.

Does it weigh 100 pounds? Yes? It's fine
If you're into lighting money on fire do the flip. Otherwise wear and enjoy!

its really heavy, everything checks out on it, movement and time is fine, I guess I am not questioning authenticity as much as preowned is a different feel to me than AD purchase. However, AD wanted to charge me about 13K more than preowned so I went this route. I feel I made the right choice, just was nawing at me.

No question you saved money on used, no question it would be stupid to go back to new. That said from what I get from your posts, you are not gonna be happy with this watch. And for a watch like that the only feeling you should have is ecstatic! Anyway keep this or flip and get new still huge congrats on the best of the Rolex best! Welcome to the club!! Where is the pic!!?? |

You say this watch came from a European AD?? If so, I would call them, personally, and verify it. I would also ask them if they were the AD who sold the watch to the original owner. If the thing is still brand new and has the original stickers surely this AD will know of its single owner, safe queen pedigree. Their personal assurance of all this to you would be very reassuring, I"m sure. Good luck and let us know! |

Second, I believe there has been a thread in the past day or two where someone cited a Rolex Service Center's quoting a price of $175 to perform an authentication examination. With all you saved, that might be a small price to get the peace of mind you seem to be seeking. |

I think you should keep the watch and enjoy it. How often will you look at your warranty card over the years? So why take loss and pay more for new one on top of that.

No pics? Let's see that beauty! Perhaps, you can bring it to your closest RSC or AD with an in-house watchmaker. This way all your doubts can be put to rest.
Congrats by the way.

Assuming money is no issue, sell it and get a new one...there's no point in not being happy with it and always wishing you'd done differently.

At this price point you have to be 100% happy with your purchase, I couldn't buy such a one used so I know how it niggles at you and makes it less special than it should feel. I would rectify and buy new, even tho it may hurt.

To be 100% sure, you have to send it to ROLEX Service Center and risk loosing it.
The only thing that could be wrong, is it could be stolen...
That is the only thing that makes me worried about buying watches pre-owned, but I still do it. There's no way to know, and even if the AD verifies the sale of the Platona, it may have been stolen after and never reported to that particular AD. I have asked many sellers of pre-owned, and I get a similar response. "I'm almost positive it's not stolen." "I know the Seller" It's the old soft-shoe... Correct me if I'm wrong, and I hope I am.
