Why does Rolex not make dress watches?

I honestly dont see the problem.

I get what you’re trying to say but I see a problem with the way you articulated your point.

A milguass is the definition (since we are using this term) of a tool watch. So when you wear it with a t-shirt and shorts, you are wearing a tool watch casually. Similarly, when you wear it with a suit, you are wearing a tool watch in a dressier setting.

Just cause you wear a tool watch with a suit doesn’t make it a dress watch!

Yes it does. This is fashion and fashion is if anything, mutable.

Among the vast billions of people who don’t wear a watch for various socioeconomic reasons - their watch is the sun, the moon and stars...or a smartphone...so their input to the debate would be “why the iPhone 8 isn’t a dress watch”

Sorry your link doesn’t work, but regardless a Milgauss was THE tool watch developed for scientist / nuclear research - so excuse me if I don’t care what Webster has to say.

Fashion means you can wear a tool watch with a tux and brown shoes with a black belt, of course you can do what you like. But that does not become the definition of etiquette for traditional dress attire.

You seems to be confusing what is and what can be! A Milgauss “IS” a tool watch with a sporty design, which “CAN” be worn with a tux / formal attire. Does not make the watch so.

i agree and I wear sports watches with suits myself and don't care to own a dress watch. Even i admit that I'm not wearing a dress watch. My 5712 looks great with a suit but that doesn't make it a dress watch. It will never be that.

Why does Rolex not make dress watches?

I would think a great watch trumps a dress watch. I find most dress watches (in the classic/debatable sense) to be hideous and I’d never sully my wrist with one. My GMT2 BLRO on the other hand is both stylish and functional. That’s where it’s beauty comes from.

And it goes perfectly with my powder blue prom tux from the 1970’s.

Does a baseball cap become a top hat if worn with full evening dress? Do Crocs become Oxfords if worn with a business suit?

The real answer of course is TRF has a sports watch bias and that is a fact that is true across all brands. If they made dress watches and flooded the market with them we would have nothing to talk about as we already don't talk about dress watches that are actually in existence.

Rolex doesn't put as much focus on their dress watch line (Cellini) presumably because there's limited return on the investment in the research, development, and marketing when compared to the well-established sports models. As for what constitutes a dress-watch or what is acceptable for a sports-watch, I'll leave that up to the fashion experts. I don't care what category my watch fits into. What fits under my cuff is my business.

OP, people here can be really encouraging and helpful if you do your homework before asking a question or starting a new topic, and they can be equally disparaging if you don't.

I think the real question is, why doesn't Rolex make a pocket watch?

Actually, I believe the link is fine. Point being, there is no official definition of a "tool watch". Well, that is my take on it. Carry on.

Because they're rough and tough "tool" lifestyle types! Like the guy who wears a DSSD with a tux...

Your definition of "dress watch" dates back several decades. Now most watches can be worn with anything. Dressed up or down. There is no standard dress watch. A SS Sub would look fine with a Tux. Small thin strap watches are really passé at this point. I just read an article somewhere saying most vintage watches if they do not have a known name of consequence are basically worth scrap value of the metal. Really a pity.

Neither is there one for “dress watch” lol. Not sure why Merriem-Webster became the guide for us WIS defining tool and dress watches when we all know all too well what we are referring to.

Of course it is, but it remains inherit as a tool watch purposely build for pilots with a second/third time zone. It can be dressed up or down and is a diverse piece.

Wear it in good health

Why do these kinds of threads and dress code questions even come up?? Does anyone even care about this stuff other than directing it as their own trivial "first world problems".

I certainly did my research, and my follow up post on the Cellini movement demonstrates that.

The original post had no mention or relation to dress-codes, although some replies took the discussion in that direction.

We are not talking about the diameter of a 3131 movement. We are talking about preferences and opinions.

There seems to be some on here who thing that their definition of a subject is the objectively true definition of a subject. I continue in this trollish thread because I find it amusing to see how far one will argue a point.

My final authority:

My wife thinks my z-blue is more dressy than my Nomos. I dare you to correct her!
