As a retired NYC Police Officer I can tell you that if you are collared all your property will be taken from you and vouchered for safekeeping. I don’t believe any cop would be stupid enough to throw away a million dollar pension plus full healthcare that we receive for the rest of our lives for a $ 10,000 watch. I take offense at some of these comments that I’ve read.

I've got two close friends in the Police. One is front line and one works for a specialist unit. I can assure you that both would have taken Stew's comment in the manner in which it was intended and with no offence whatsoever.

I had pretty much ignored this thread when I first saw it but it was brought to my attention earlier this morning. Now that I’m up to speed I can see that my first instinct was correct.
I’m just surprised that the thread is still open which goes to the patience and fairness of Tim more than anything else. And all the more surprising after having been insulted by several members.
For those few, if you are ever in such a situation, you’ll be hoping to get the same consideration that you got here.

Hello all.

I just want to say that when I started this thread, I had genuine curiosity about the subject at hand.

I feel this is comparable to when people ask “if you go through airport security, do you remove your watch?”

I was just wondering, what happens if you are arrested, because a watch is on your wrist as opposed to a necklace for example.

I am assuming, say you are pulled over in your Porsche or BMW (like a lot of you drive as I look over the “let’s see those steering wheels thread”)

Then your car may be towed, and if it were to be damaged by accident (as it is towed) I’m assuming the owner would be angry.

Similarly, I wondered, what if the cuffs beat up your watch?

As I’m not sure that a police officer would ask you to remove your watch and call somebody to come pick it up (like they sometimes do with a car).

Things of this nature is what I was wondering about.

I myself respect police officers for the service that they provide.

But I do apologize as this thread took a negative turn.

This may be a very naive question, I don't know. But I looked it up and it doesn't look like somebody has asked this before.

About 14 years ago, I was arrested. I can give you my take on the matter. I’m not a career criminal, so your mileage may vary. I can only speak on my experience and observations.

Jail/Prison is a place you want to avoid, at all costs. I went to jail, not prison, and it sucks.

If you get arrested and/or questioned, you want to be polite. Remember, everything you say or do will be used against you. If you’re not sure what to do or say, then be quiet. Be silent until you can consult a lawyer.

Being polite buys you a lot. When I was handcuffed, my arresting officer told me to put my hands behind my back, and hold my hands together like I’m praying. He said that doing it that way, the handcuffs wouldn’t be as tight.

Actually, he put them on pretty comfortably. Also, the only thing he took from me was my driver’s license. He gave my watch, money, all my other possessions to my wife.

When I got to jail, they will catalog and inventory all your items. In the state of Florida, if you have cash on you, they will notify you and tell you they are taking $20 as some sort of fee.

I turned in all my clothes, and changed into an orange jumpsuit.

Again, being polite helps. When I arrived at the jail, my arresting officer told the people at the jail (not sure what they are called) that I was cool and wouldn’t give them any trouble.

I was able to make more than my one “allowed” phone call.

In jail, there’s no privacy. Everything is dirty. I couldn’t sleep because everyone was talking, shouting, etc. Jail is also very boring. I was thinking of all the other places I’d rather be, and the other things I would rather be doing. (i.e. getting laid would be better than this)

In my cell, I was actually with hardened, career criminals who had been arrested again.

We talked a little. My whole philosophy was to mind my business, and keep my mouth shut.

In the morning, I was feed pancakes. The quality was below par of cafeteria food served in the school system. I was only given a plastic spoon, no fork or knife. When they took the food tray, they made sure the plastic spoon was there.

After that, for an hour, I was in a courtyard inside with the others who were arrested.

I just listened to their stories.

Two hours later, I met the judge via CCTV. I was released without bail.

I hired an attorney, and he represented me in court. If you didn’t keep your mouth shut and talked to the police, everything will be on the police report. When you are interviewing with your attorney, he is sizing you up to whether or not he wants to defend you. Be honest with him, and based on his experience, he will tell you what your odds are.

I was placed on what was called “administrative probation.” This meant that as long as I didn’t get arrested or in trouble for six months, the State of Florida would drop all charges.

Technically, I should have a criminal record. By the letter of the law, I was guilty of the crime I was charged with.

Since that was the first time I was arrested, I was basically given a “pass.”

Since then, I’ve only been pulled over for speeding. Remember, being polite is the key.

I’ve gotten out of all but two tickets.

When an officer asks you why he pulled you over, be honest.

Once an officer asked me that, and I said I was speeding 10 miles over the limit.

He said, that’s not why, but I’ll take it. He asked me the question again.

I said to him, I’m not being cute with you, besides speeding I’m not sure why you pulled me over.

Him: you illegally made a right turn at a red light without stopping. Do you remember that?

Me: yes

Him: here’s your warning.

Another thing I do when I’ve been pulled over is when the officer approaches, I hand over my license, registration and my concealed carry license. I tell him I’m armed, as a courtesy.

So far, I’ve noticed that’s eased the conversation. Some have asked what I’m carrying, etc.

For the morale of the story, if you are arrested, your Rolex will be the last of your worries. If you are cool, the officer will probably allow you to put it in your pocket before he puts the handcuffs on.

The thing I will tell you is to avoid being arrested, period. Use your words. Avoid physical confrontations unless you are defending yourself.

Think about what you have to lose. Wife, family, job, etc, and ask is it worth it.

Lastly, it’s never a bad idea to have a lawyer or lawyers as friends or acquaintances. Lawyers have a stigma, but when you need them, they are worth their weight in gold. Establish relationships if you can. When you need their advice, pay them. But, knowing them ahead of time is just a convenience.

I feel badly that this thread, though we all have different humor compasses, went to the dark side in some of the posts, off track from the OP's subject.

My past profession crossed paths with law enforcement officers, and I know from first hand experience, they are subject to scrutiny in everything they do, and going to work every day not knowing if they'll be able to go home at their end of shift to hug their children, wife, family.

I do salute people who work in law enforcement. Thank you for your service on the front lines.... so many heroes.

I respect your opinion but you do realize that there are many areas of the country that do not enjoy highly trained and professional police with million dollar pensions and healthcare to lose? It can be quite a hazard to be pulled over/arrested in some rural areas of the country. There are many small town within a few hundred miles of here with one or two LEO's who are sometimes the most corrupt people in town.

I have friends who are LEO's just like everyone deserve respect and the benefit of the doubt, but in this day and age almost anyone can end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, and would be wise to know how to protect their valuable assets.

Let's see, I arrest drunk and cuff him/her. Go back to the station for booking. Do the paperwork which includes an inventory of the property on the back of the booking card. Item #1, gold colored/SS "Rolex" Datejust. Hmmmm......Let's see, the sub has already taken the breath test, and is a county resident, and has a ride coming in 10 minutes. Think I'll take his watch out of a sealed envelope, and go back to the locker room and check to see if I have the exact counterfeit watch stored there among the hundreds I keep on hand for just such an occasion!!!! Luckily I have one squirreled away!!!The bracelet is also adjusted perfectly for his wrist so he won't know the difference when he puts it on!!! What a lucky coincidence!! Now I need to get the watch back into his property without another officer, the cameras, or the owner seeing me!!!! Happens every day. Are people really stupid enough to think that this happens????
