The thought of dropping that amount of money on a single watch scares me. It would never enter my head, even if I could afford it.

From the OPs choices though, after seeing Ken's pics it would have to be a platty DD. What a stunning piece!

So my question..

If you were looking in the 50k range what would you be looking at?
Patek 5170R with Breguet numerals. DavidSW just had one (gone now) that was a month old for $54K. Stunning classic. However, a Platinum DD is not a terrible choice either, for sure.

Platona is regarded by some as the endboss in Rolex (probably because of the price tag) but it is not not by far the summum in Horlogerie. With a 50k budget I would be shopping for a Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet or maybe a Breguet. Good luck shopping!

Agreed. The Platona brought me little joy tbh, I owned for less than half a year and flipped it.

The 116719 BLRO is in my opinion the coolest modern Rolex, heritage, style, innovation (first red cerachrome bi colour bezel), WG, oyster bracelet, just a beautiful reiteration of a classic.

With the Platona, the initial wow factor wears out quick, the ice blue dial burns too brightly and gets a little boring after a while. The Brown bezel is cool but again, doesnt have much staying power for me.

Honestly, at this point of my collection, I have only desire for 3 more watches.

The AP 26579CE Royal Oak Perpetual in all black ceramic
The Patek 5970 perpetual calendar chronograph
The Lange Zeitwerk

$50K should get me the Zeitwerk, or partially fund the one of the other two watches.

$50k on a watch, I’d go with either the RG 5711 or YG with the champagne dial AP 15202.

15202 is another great one but would have to be rose gold

unless you really want PM, i would still choose SS. 5990

I dont really get the rationale of spending PM money for a PM watch unless the metal is important or the watch is only offered that way. Sometimes it is, and that is OK. Sometimes its not though and people want to spend X amount of money and therefore they automatically buy PM and let the metal steer the choice.

Another vote for datograph, though I think for 50k may have to go pre owned/gray

Platinum DD40, slightly pre-owned at 40k. 10K for a Hulk. Two cool watches.

To be honest, I'm not sure I'll ever get to the point where I am comfortable with spending 50k on a watch lol.

Probably the highest I would spend at this point in time.

Yea, don't think it would ever happen, but I'll say I would value brand/workmanship over precious metal (ie. would take Patek over Gold/Platinum)

This is my debate, my collection is almost entirely Rolex too.
