I’ve always had a thing for watches since I was a kid. I wanted something that would last, I enjoy the history and story of Rolex, and I wanted something to possibly be able to pass down to my kids. So I saved up and bought one :)

A potential client gifted me with a fake Rolex DD. I wore it twice but couldn't appreciate it. I then started looking at the real thing and pulled the trigger on a formally owned DJ. Still have it and that was about 20 years ago. I own many brands but always come back to Rolex for stamina, travel, etc.

I was buying books to read prior to my surgeries. I somehow became interested in automatic Swiss watches late in life, I never even wore a watch before that. But I've always been a bit of a geek and a gadget guy.

I pored over that Wristwatch Annual during my surgery recovery and rehab, to pass the time and take my mind off the pain. Despite thousands of watches shown in the Annual at all price points, the Rolex line just spoke to me, fascinated me.

If I had to sum it up:
  • I can wear a little bit of perfection on my wrist every day, all day, and be inspired. A group of very focused people came together and decided to produce something that is both luxurious and tough, with no compromises. Whatever chaos is going on in my job or life, I can glance down at that and be reassured and inspired that real quality and execution is absolutely possible. It is calming for me.
  • Unlike luxury cars, exotic vacations, etc., a Rolex can be worn and appreciated 24 x 7. And, if held and maintained, retain or or even grow in value, rather than just be pissed away once or trotted out on rare occasions.
  • So many people I admire wear Rolex, it seems to me a symbol of people who are successful in their field. Not necessarily wealthy, just successful and dedicated to their craft. Perhaps I have bought into the Rolex ambassador hype, but it really does resonate with me. There are a lot more expensive watches, but the Rolex brand is very special and symbolic in a way thagt others aren't.
  • Other luxury watch makers have one or perhaps two models that might catch my eye. But I admire so much of the entire Rolex line, there really are none I wouldn't proudly wear.

I've never been disappointed in any Rolex that I've ever bought. They have all exceeded my expectations, and been more beautiful, rugged, and reliable in daily life than I ever anticipated before purchase. Not much else I can say that about.

And I will never forget the feeling of wearing that first Rolex out for the first time. As my Ulster Irish mother used to say, "Why, I wouldn't call the King my cousin!"

👍👍👍👍...very well said

Cuz my dad has one.
While I was growing up, I love looking at my dad's watch.
My dad still wears the same watch from the 70s that he paid $200 for.

Ok let’s all be real, I bought Rolex because it says “Look at me I got money”. Unlike the rest of you I’m just being honest. For thoughness, durability, functionality, accuracy and value of a tool watch we should all be wearing Casio G Shocks.

Believe what you want but not why I bought a Rolex, I actually prefer models without the cyclops as the cyclops screams Rolex and look at me.

after the battery died on my previous "nice" watch,

i wanted a durable 300m water resistant watch and timing bezel, crown guards, sapphire cyrstal and automatic movement.

after considering all of the other brands i could find, the rolex beat out the competition based on the design elements and aesthetics, the rest is history.

Perhaps for you but not me. I could care less if someone notices and actually I’d prefer that others don’t notice.

Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, Rolex watches were part of the business dress in the financial world I inhabited in the 80's and 90's. That we were successful enough to own one was part of the equation.

BTW, pretty much anyone can own a Rolex. I suspect most of the buyers on this site are financing their purchases with credit cards or store credit accounts.

It's funny you said that. I did an experiment at work. I was wearing my sub date and my co-worker was wearing an Invicta.

Everyone at work for whatever reason was asking about his Invicta (probably it's bigger and more blingy), not one person ask about my Rolex. Until my co-worker said I have a nicer watch, then someone ask me if I was wearing a Breitling. After they looked at my watch, someone said he has the Real Deal, he has a Rolex. Most people don't notice Rolex.

Because I liked sports watches from the time I was old enough to know what a watch was and saw images of Subs in National Geographic and the diving magazines I read.

Why did you buy a Rolex?

For some milestones in life, a watch to wear for lifetime and then pass to the next generation.
Keeps its value.
Love the ss sports models.

Your comment is ignorant and disrespectful to forum members. You typify the negative stereotype some of the general public have of Rolex owners.

I for one, appreciate the history and the quality of these references which should last my lifetime...and only buy to reward myself for hard work.

I purchased my first Rolex because I wanted a watch which would last the rest of my life and could be passed down to my son. After 8 years my Explorer 2 shows every mark made while taking him to disney, coaching lacrosse and building a treehouse. The wear on this watch was all made with him and some day it will be his to hopefully remember all the times I wore it.

I gave one to myself as a birthday present for my 29th almost 35 years ago. And because Magnum, PI wore one!

It’s all good. The comment was indeed stereotypical, but hilarious, hyperbole, and not without some merit re some purchasers.

I bought my first Explorer II as I work for a global relief agency and fancied the battery free operation, mechanical precision, and two time zones, but felt like the GMT II yelled “Rolex” just a little too loud in my circles.

Now, I can’t say exactly why, but I’m very captured by the addition of the months complication on the Skydweller - like as the red rectangle makes it’s 12 month orbit around the dial you can see the year passing, is as close as I can understand my strong attraction to that watch.

He is kind of right though. We are the minority. Most consumers who buy Rolex have the stereotype of "rich guy that walks into a jewelry store and says gimme a Rolie". I have talked to too many guys i've seen wearing rolexs that don't know S*&^ about watches. Just bought the name.
