I had both and ended up selling the Blackbay. Would never sell my Speedy Pro though.

Big BB fan, but the Speedy is such an iconic nice watch... go for the Speedy.

I have both. Prefer the speedy. If you can find a used one with. The big box. Cheap. I got mine on the bay $2700
Sold the box for $455 with the goodies and the strap leather for $395. Kept the nato cards etc. Walked away with a 6 month old speedy for $1850. Can't beat that. Now the black bay has equal strap combos but it's as stated too thick. |

I own both (3570.50 Speedy and Burgundy ETA BlackBay). The Speedy was my first "nice" watch and I think would probably feel like a better investment than the BB. However I tend to wear my BB more, so make of that what you will.
I also have to say the Speedy has had some QC issues: - The pin on the bracelet broke twice, and I've had to wear it on straps for the past 2+ years. - The chrono pusher at the 2-o'clock position broke (again, years ago) rendering the stop-watch function useless. - The main spring recently broke, or at least I that's what it's called when the "brake" that stops you from over-winding it manually breaks and doesn't work anymore. At any rate, I finally decided to send it back in for service about a week ago. Should have it back in another month or so. Something else to consider -- the service bills on a Speedy aren't cheap, about $750. Also, I tend to spend a lot of coin on buying straps for the Speedy, since it is so incredibly "strap versatile" and looks beautiful on just about any strap. But this is probably a good thing. The BB, on the other hand, has been "solid as a Rolex" .. so far, no QC issues and I've had it for 2+ years. I think it feels a little more solid than the Speedy, and once you get used to Oyster-style clasps, it's hard to go back to the weird pin clasp thing the Speedy has, although the rest of the Speedy bracelet is I think handsome. Finally, the 1861 movement that ships in the current Speedy is something of a "cheapened" down version of the famous 321. It's not a movement nerd, but I understand that it's not a column wheel and uses plastic parts, which in a luxury watch is sort of ... meh. The Speedy overall can feel a bit anachronistic to modern watch owners -- relatively low beat movement, hesalite crystal, etc. I tend to like things that are a bit different, but it's not as flashy as many other modern pieces (although it is handsome -- I probably get more comments on my Speedy than on my other watches combined).

Speedy is awesome. Scratches are worth it. The domed crystal makes the watch IMO. Not a fan of the sapphire on the speed master.
