Holy cow....

My family thinks a $100 is expensive.

And my friend with a Porsche GT3 in PTS signal green doesn't really get watches.

Either could afford a watch, they just don't see the point.

It doesn't matter which model of Rolex you wear, they are all made the same. I used to be so proud of my OP34 silver dial, and now I am proud of my Explorer 1. Truth be known, I almost wish I had kept my OP34. There is nothing that can upstage that watch!

You also have to wonder how many of those nicer ones are fake, though......the kid in the OP's situation may have had a $500 replica on.

I honestly find watches a great conversation starter.

If someone is wearing a $5000 + watch, whatever the make, he is a passionate watch aficionado just like myself so lets get talking watches. It never fails.

If his watch happens to be better than mine, good for him, I'm genuinely pleased for him, I'll ask what other watches he considered before buying his current model.

I just love watches.

I'll only start a watch chat if the other guy is wearing something nicer than the one I have on.

Never. Not even sure why someone would feel this way unless you bought a watch to impress people. Grateful I got what I got in this life.

Never feel upstaged. Never met someone else in person with the watch I owned at the time (PP 5167, Rolex Smurf, SD43, White Daytona nor BLRO, etc.) However I have met others with watches I find interesting (regardless of price) in which I strike up a convo and find out they are a WIS too and have a good convo regardless what I'm wearing. Never feel upstaged.

Only time I felt a ~similar~ feeling was when I was at the Four Seasons spa and some rappers (not to be named) were wearing big Rose Gold APs and Diamond crusted PP. Didnt get the WIS feel from them nor do I make convos when relaxing in a Spa but I didn't acknowledge what they were wearing as also was poor taste talking about what was locked in your locker IMO. Just saw the watches and was like hmmm. Moved on. Just like I think a PP and Richard Mille are equally beautiful, normally with quite a range in price, but each impressive on their own.

Price has never really been a guideline for upstaging for me... I don’t care what watch you have on, when you have some real horological knowledge is when I feel “ upstaged”.

probably a knock off, FA don t make that kind of cash..unless they are married to money..or family wealth, but if you are rich, you don't become a waitress of the sky.

i know a lot of pilots and FA that buy their watches in Beijing or shanghai..they usually cost $ 100 and last a couple of year, just saying.

I might as well be wearing a Seiko. So I started doing it. A month ago I wore my SKX and immediately felt a lot better. :p
I think the build quality of modern rolexes are far better than vintage. In my view the higher price of vintage is all about the scarcity but you get a better watch if you buy a current release.

I wear my seiko most days so thus happens rather often. When I wear my sd43 not so often as in Asian suburbs many are fakes.

With Brian. I seek personal joy in ownership not social acceptance and keeping up with the joneses.
Where would I be if I took that comparing approach with my house, car or family. Be humble and enjoy the gifts that God has given you.

Actually I upstaged my Rolexes myself when I began wearing Patek Philippe and Audemars Piquet. Just finer watches.

Guess if that’s your priority save up and buy a watch over $300k. Chances of getting upstaged then go down to almost 0.

When I still had my TT CHNR I was on a plane and the guy next to me complemented me on it. He then proceeded to wait until the very end of the flight to roll up his sleeves to reveal the full gold version on his wrist. So he pretty much read that I had two pair and slow rolled that he had flopped the nuts. Tip the cap and move on.
