A few additional options

Well, as others have said, the proverbial shakedown is annoying, to say the least, but having access to a new Daytona at list (assume that they are offering it to you at list?) is certainly not an easy thing to come by (and likely won't be for the foreseeable future).

As mentioned, if you can use and are able to find a piece of jewelry then a definite no-brainer. However, if you really don't have the need/desire for a new piece of pricey jewelry than you can pass or perhaps get creative.

If you have a friend or colleague that's in the market for jewelry then perhaps you could work something out with him/her so that you get the watch and they get the jewelry at no additional expense to you. Win - win - win.

Some states have buyer protection laws that give the purchaser certain rights regarding returns and refunds. Not that I condone poor or bad-faith behavior but one option may be to look at your state's laws for returns/refunds to see if you could buy the watch and the piece of jewelry and then return the jewelry, if state law allows for a full refund. If successful you would have solved one problem but likely will have created another. First, the AD would likely never do business with you again based on going against the agreement you made when purchasing. Also, it's just not a very nice thing to do in general, however, either is making the purchase of a $13K watch contingent on buying a $3K piece of jewelry that you don't really want or need.

I would do this in a heartbeat. Cheaper than grey, have the paperwork in your name and the wifey gets a nice gift.

in addition, i wonder how many of them actually paid a premium and bought some harder to get references from greys. many on this forum did, that's for sure.

Bottom line is the market is VERY hot for these SS Daytonas, and the OP has the opportunity (and wants) to buy a new DaytonaC from an AD but has to also buy a $3k necklace. The alternative is paying $10K over to a scalper, which many people here would gladly endorse as "not playing games with the AD". The scalper sourced watch would of course have a questionable warranty status, and the OPs name would not be on the warranty card.

OP will 100% not get another opportunity to buy a DaytonaC from that AD, and 99% will not get an opportunity to buy a DaytonaC period, unless, and this is a big MAYBE, he spends many multiples of that $3K with an AD.

those are the simple facts. this is business, the AD can sell to whomever he wants. A grey would likely also pay $3K over MSRP or have to buy that same necklace, the only difference being he would resell the watch for $10K over, instead of $3k.

Of course. You get an impossible to get watch and buy your wife something nice as well. 3k is nothing these days. A lot of dealers are requiring a 50k purchase to get one.

It's called tied selling and it's highly illegal in other regulated industries such as the Financial industry.

Thanks in advise for your honest reply.
I'd rather just pay the ad an extra 2k.

If you don't want it, I'll buy the watch and the necklace right now. I could use a few points with the wife.
Just sayin...

Don’t complicate things. Is this watch worth $16k to you? If yes do it. If not move on. The AD is being clear in their terms of business. Up to you to agree or walk. Morals and principles are meaningless here as no one is dying or going to be hurt one way or another.

If it were me. If I absolutely want the watch now, I would do it. All things considered, msrp + $3k is still the best price I would ever get. Plus, the $3k gets me jewelry. If I go grey I pay many k more without getting anything to show for, not cool.

If I don’t mind waiting, I wouldn’t of course.

That 3k bracelet is probably worth 1/8 the price since jewelry usually works on an 8 times multiple.

I can't put it better than others already have. The AD would never see me again.

Those who would do it, I see your point. I just can't bring myself to spend money in order for the opportunity and privilege to spend 4X more money. I would not feel comfortable doing business with people willing to do that with their customers. I would worry that their ethics bleed over to other aspects of their business and how they treat others.

I would take it given the current market condition and prices if I want the Daytona.

I would walk away unless I was truly in the market for other jewellery. I understand it may be the times we are in but I wouldn't be prepared to buy that way.

Check their returns policy. Maybe you can buy both then return the jewelry later

I would do it. People are paying close to double MSRP and getting NOTHINNG more than the watch.

If you pay 3k more and get jewelry seems like a win to me.

No brainer here. You can sell the watch for more than its worth and keep the necklace for the wife. Hell, most guys here on TRF would do it and flip the watch for the extra cash or just keep the watch which would be much less than buying on the gray market.

I say do it - it's the way of the world today.

I would only entertain the idea if they're selling it to you at retail. If they are asking over retail + you need to buy the 3K item, I would tell them to fuck off

I personally wouldn’t buy it. It’s just a watch and I don’t really care what others have to say how much it’s worth. It’s a very unethical way of doing business. I would definitely report the establishment to Rolex and local better business bureau. I’m sure others will say spend the extra $3k. For me, I would definitely not feel comfortable wearing it.

Well by now you’ve been given just about every possible scenario and piece of advice ...

In the end, there are a hundred ways you can justify the purchase so it’s really up to you. Good luck either way

I am in complete agreement with this. I would rather market rate be controlled by ADs than grey market taking the profit and providing risk. There is currently no downside as you can sell the watch for more than the cost of the two combined.
