To Toucan: looks awesome! I hope you love it!

To TNG: Completely understandable. Currently it's a giant premium over the beautiful WG/OF version. When the platinum Daytona is trading at or near MSRP, it is very hard to justify. And I say this after almost 2 1/2 years of absolutely loving mine and enjoying it every day.

I imagine the ~MSRP pricing for platinum Daytonas will soften sometime, unless of course the watch gets discontinued. But I can't imagine Rolex ever discontinuing all platinum Daytonas -- they would IMO just come out with a different looking one.

I loved my platona and wore it everyday. But I turn 70 soon and the dial was getting hard to read at a glance, so I sold mine and bought a Smurf, which, as a Sub is very easy to read.

So if you are under 70 or have good eyes I would buy it in a heartbeat.

At that price point it's Journe, Patek or Lange for me.

Beautiful picture Steve. Pictures really don't do it justice, in person it's just so striking.

But as I have said earlier, I am very happy with my 116519LN, which would have to be on the way out with the 116506. At this stage I'm not convinced the 116506 will give me enjoyment commensurate with an added $40,000 USD (approximately) on top.

I think it will, and honestly speaking it is very different watch from the oysterflex version, the heft, looks, colors etc all different.

Excuse me but (if finances allow) why don’t you flip another oyster bracelet watch (e.g. the Batman) and add the platona? That way you keep 2 PM Daytonas better than 2 steel gmts

And have wider variety of metals, colors, strap/bracelets

I'd like to hear from both sides on this - yay or nay on the Platinum Daytona.

To me, it is the crown jewel of modern Rolex. The beautiful ice blue dial, the playfulness of the brown ceramic, the heft, a noble complication in a prestigious metal.

At the same time, what bugs me is that I'm worried the heft might come at the cost of all-day comfort, and that it seems to be an awful lot of extra money for just some metal, when you consider that a Daytona is available in SS, which is the same in every other respect except colour and metal. Part of my WIS self is bothered by spending so much extra cash purely for something superficial, and not on something that is "higher level" watchmaking (e.g. I could get a Lange or PP with much better finishing and craftsmanship, and a grand complication like a perpetual calendar for that kind of money.) But yet, I spent the extra money on a WG Oysterflex Daytona, but the leap here is that much greater that it really gives me pause.

I've also noticed that prices on these have crept up significantly. They were trading for low to mid 50s last year, and now are solidly in the 60s. There's definitely a FOMO component to my "itch" too. I've talked to a few ADs locally, and no one is keen on providing a discount on this model (which can be a good and bad thing.)

Also, as much as I love my WG Oysterflex Daytona because of its comfort and versatility as a daily wearer, I'd probably have to move it on to make the upgrade. And I'm worried that it might be a move in the wrong direction, as the Platinum would be less practical as a daily than the WG is.

And as they say, this thread is worthless without pics:

love this thread as i am a tragic for the 116506 std dial myself.

the thread starts with the 116506. you don't need to say much else. you want the 116506 and we all get that. either because we've all wanted a watch before or because we also want the 116506.

now the thread seems to be ending on the basis that the 116506 is not good buying right now. is it worth 40k US on top of a watch you obviously like alot (116519)? simple. NO. sensible decision. case closed.

but is it?

i predict it doesn't end here. it will take some sort of deal with the AD that you feel is slightly concessional your way, and you'll end up with the 116506.

because looking at things another way was it a rational act to buy the 116519?

dude you have a track record!

Totally fair response. For me the 116519 was much easier to rationalize as I had a white 116500LN. Sold it to upgrade and added about $7,000 USD on top. Much easier decision than a further $40,000 leap!

Maybe one day I'll get over it - but that day is not today. If the delta gets bigger and it becomes out of reach, I'll be at peace with it.

I was at Las Vegas boutique recently and saw they had a pearlmaster platinum DD in the window. Had to try it!

Truly amazing. That pearlmaster bracelet is unlike anything else. So good.

[Posting from my phone, so not sure if pic will attach. If not, I'll edit later to attach pic.]

Heavy trumps the comfort of OF imho. But I like the dial / black ceramic better than the 506. I feel my Daytona grail is in the works - full wg Ceramic

I prefer my 519 and D5s to one platona. Now, one platona and one ss is a much tighter matchup. But like Tom says, selling 519 and D500 plus 20k isn’t very appealing given current mkt dynamics. I bought my platona for 52.5 bnib (Or thereabouts, trades involved)
