I'd get a Sub or Daytona. The 36mm DayDate isn't the most versatile watch for daily wear, in my opinion. What DayDate references were you looking at though ?

Go to college, buy a house, then consider a gold Rolex

When I was 17, if I had that type of money, I would have probably done something similar. Now that I have aged a bit, if I had done that, I think that would not have been a great move - money would be better spent investing, traveling, having fun, chasing tail... You get where I am going.
However, if you really think that this will make you happy and be a good reminder of your hard work an success, well go for it! And hey, if turns out you decid it was a bad idea, you can always sell the thing and will get a lot of your money back. |

I had one when I was 17 but I had a different life I was more of a non trustworthy violent person at that time nobody questioned whether or not it was real but the lifestyle didn’t last long. Years later I own one that I worked hard to get.

Max out the 401k now before you have serious responsibilities and then consider buying property. Do that and youll be able to get any rolex you want later.

YG day-date is definitely a good watch, however not optimal for daily wear. I bought my 116200 at 16, would certainly choose a datejust as daily before stepping up to YG DD. Are you considering the DD 36 or 40? If 36, vintage or modern?

The easy answer is to go for it.
But 17yo.... geez.... I'm 55. I'm from a different generation. To me buying any Rolex is a sign that you made it. Kind of like buying a Mercedes. Kind of like when you go to clothing store and you have a choice of buying a $20 shirt or a $100 shirt. At this point of my life, I'm buying the $100 shirt. But hey... it's your life. It's your money. If that's what you really like, what you really desire, go for it. I think it's a bit exaggerated but again, I'm older and an all gold Rolex is for an older established person that isn't meant to be worn on a daily basis. That's my humble opinion. |

Don't listen to these old farts - buy and enjoy if it's what you want.
