Good point. Waiting for you to rejoin the family.
Id still like to add a 5205 one day. It’s probably blue overkill

I think this choice really come down to how much you wear it. The DD is a battle tank that you could wear every day all day, not so much the PP. But if this is a wear sometimes dress watch I would say go for the PP

The Patek, one million percent! DD's are a dime a dozen, that Patek Ref is pure class and such a better watch.

IMHO..

I do pick DD40 considering this is your 50th hence you need a flagship model that is classic and timeless piece to fit the occasion and something you can wear all the time like a beater (trust me DD40 can do that all day long and keep amazing time)

PP is nice but it is not the flagship model from PP (and far from it).. that leather strap need to be replaced and it is not a daily beater that’s for sure.

I personally think the Rolex looks really matured and stable on a 50 yo man. Looks sexy.

Happy shopping.
Jen.

As long as you have other rolexes in your collection then to be there is no debate. It should be the Patek. It is stunning.

DD every day of the week and twice on Sunday!

Seriously, I feel that the DD is so much more watch than the Patek. They do fall into two different categories though.

More like Ferrari vs. Toyota for this debate.

DD is a penny stock traders watch. In Singapore Rolex has little respect and is viewed like a casio, Timex, etc. there is no comparison here.

5205 can and should be worn as a daily watch, just don’t wear in gym or beach.

I am confused by some stating Patek is overrated, bla bla bla. I have Pateks, AP's and Rolex's. I recently got a RG/Olive DD and I love it but there is zero chance if a watch had to go that I would choose any of my Pateks over the DD. Now, the 5205G is ok, that blue dial is much more black in person, keep that in mind. And if you want gold, look at the 5205R in rose gold instead.

Not mine as I have no 5205, considered the G but did not love it in person.

Yeah, I happen to agree. I love my DD but I find it better suited with a t-shirt or sweatshirt to be honest, its really not a dress watch and very loud. The Patek however is elegant and sophisticated, I love it, just the 5205G didn't work for me.

Here is when I tried it on, just didn't do it for me. Still a gorgeous watch!

This is my 5905 platinum, similar to 5205 but 2mm larger with chronograph. Also to consider if you like 5205.

Casual with T-shirt also works with 5205 and 5905 Patek very well.

In 1999 I had the choice of buying a WG DD or a Patek 3700. Both were virtually the same price. Like an imbecile I bought the WG DD, one of the most memorable bone-head moves of my life.

Don’t be like me. Buy the Patek.

True story.

I think this looks great on you. One thing I remeber about the piece is how it fit my wrist like a glove. Looks to do the same for you

If this was posted in the Patek forum, the responses would probably lean a different way

Thanks to all of you. Except the snarky Ferrari Porsche guy.

Love all of the thoughts and the pics. I’m deciding tomorrow.

Firstly, I think that the OP would have been better of placing this thread in the Watches - Non Rolex forum. In my opinion that would be fair to both manufacturers.
I have owned both pieces and certainly wouldn’t describe the DD as a “Sport” watch. Both imo are watches that can be worn at anytime and in fact they were.
The 5205, as some have suggested is not a scratch magnet.
I currently have a 5227R on a deployant, which not only makes it safer when taking the watch off, but also, imo, extends the lifetime of the strap. The DD was the first piece, that I truly fell in love with. It brings a smile to my face every time I slip it on and I feel the heft and the substantial build of the it.
The beauty of the 5205 is that very few people know what it is or what complication it hides. Whereas the DD is globally recognised by a large proportion of the population.
Though the OP is in an envious potion, I would not like to make the decision as I love both watches.
But, if push came to shove, I would lean more towards the Patek Philippe.
Why, because compared to Rolex it’s fairly unknown and for its complication.
The R/G version with the ivory dial is, imo, sublime.

I’m cheap and can’t afford the 5170p. The 5205 will be the substitute for it.

I absolutely respect Patek, love their watches, but at the same time most of them are not for me. I like time-only watches without any complications, and I never have a chance to wear dressy watches. If I wanted a dressy watch, I'd go for a Lange or something else. Pateks just do nothing for me.

Assuming they are the same price (to be clear that means I expect the PP to be heavily discounted) then I’d go with the Day Date.

I agree, you definitely got that right. Love Pateks but somehow I have always enjoyed Rolex more and in my case somewhat more accessible I guess...
