Rolex are the everyman’s luxury workhorse. Like a pickup truck with leather seats and aircon. They have become a lot more expensive recently but the concept of the designs are the same. Basic, functional, reliable and workmanlike with undecorated movements. There is no art to them, just good solid design and build quality. They are the best made midrange and mass produced watches that can be bought. But be under no illusion, half the car dealers and coffee baristas of the developed World are wearing one.

National Geographic ads first got me interested with their explorers, adventurers, professionals and scientists. People who really needed a tough and reliable watch for their role. In modern times, I find the magazine ads based on celebrities, fashion and tennis players not at all interesting. Coupled with the current fashions and availability crisis plus silly instagram obsessives I am feeling a lot less interested. The World has become a far more trivial, lightweight and fake place.
I think people see them as a status symbol and a symbol of self-achievement and success because of the fact they really arent an every man watch anymore. With prices starting at £4,500 that is more money than most working class people's cars are worth.

I personally bought myself a Rolex because its a brand ive admired my whole life and I think its something nice to purchase when you feel you have overachieved in life - I come from nothing and have done well so for my 26th I got myself an Explorer I.

Each time I look down at the dial and it reminds me of all the success I have achieved so far and also tests and pushes me to keep going, to not drop the ball, to never be satisfied...The Rolex Way :)

I like the designs over other brands. For example, the world is going nuts over a 5711. If I was offered one at msrp I would pass because design wise they do nothing for me.

Damn - I knew it was the fish tank that those voices were coming from.

The wife said - nah it is the Pomeranian. I knew she was wrong - he only speaks Norwegian and likes Grand Seiko.

Thanks for clarifying it for me.

Great reply by the waythanks.

Rolex makes great watches but I think their marketing and brand equity is what really brings in the $$$. I bought a Rolex mainly because I like their designs, robustness, and luxury image.

This is a good question and I am not insincere enough to pretend that the Rolex name isn't a significant factor. If it weren't, why spend $10K plus on a watch? If I only cared about form, fit and function then I'd buy Hamilton's or Tissot's all day long for $1K or less. Heck, could get a Timex that'll do the job for $50.

What makes a rolex so special?

Cause when I decided I like wristwatches I wanted to understand why Rolex was the “best”. So I bought one to understand why for myself first hand. Then I realized they aren’t the best, not for the price you pay for one, and I realized I had totally bought into the marketing hype and was just hoping everyone noticed I had one - though it was pretty to look at. Then I went crazy, bought and sold more and more pieces and didn’t really lose any money, which was kind of cool, now I just own one because I finally found one I ACTUALLY like enough to not sell. Guess what? It’s not a Submariner either!

Nowadays, I think yes. As evidenced by a huge number of posts on this forum. For some, it’s not enough to have a shiny watch because they realize no one notices or cares...so they wear beaded bracelets to try drawing even more attention. Hahahahahhahahahahahahaha

Design, durability, serviceability.

Not many watch brands have all 3.

My Mom and Dad always had Rolexes. Mom had a lady TT datejust with a black watch face. Dad had two DJs. One he gave to my brother the other he gave to me. The one I got was 25 year award from IBM. When they passed away I also got my grandmothers 5005.

Since I had the funds, I figured I would expand my collection with a Sub C ND and a BLRO. Now I'm trying to figure out what the next will be...

I wear / buy Rolex because Rolex is
S U P E R L A T I V E
...and when I wake in the morning, the first thought that goes through my mind is which Rolex am I wearing today?; and regardless of the model I am due to wear (I rotate four Rolexs), I always smile.

The perfect way to start a day!

Isn't life just magnificent!?

I have yet to meet a Rolex owner who knows more about their watch, than what the salesman told them when they were sold the Rolex. I’d presume 90+% of Rolex owners, fall into the category you hate.

I am also convinced the OP is a troll. Dedicated troll, as he has >200 posts, but still very trollish. I can’t imagine how insufferable he would be in real life if he is consistent with his posts.

What makes it special? Memories made while wearing the watch. It's just a watch at the end of each day.

I assume this topic is better than reading another investment one.

I love the Rolex designs. Most are very simplistic put that together with a great movement and IMO you have a great watch.
