IMO it sucks that the OP was a line that many people worked hard and aspired to get as their first and only Rolex. They ruined it with these colors. The secondary piece to get this is laughable for a newcomer.

One of TS at TRF is asking for $13995 for OP 41mm Turquoise.

If one is put way off by these Grey prices and choses to hold on to their money (rational, smart), ......no....., theyre not "paying with time." That's a cute little ditty but its exactly the opposite of reality.

Everyone should suit themselves freely, but unless one thinks that they are somehow "getting a good deal" by purchasing at 2x retail (+) so that they don't somehow lose value by making another choice, doing absolutely nothing looks pretty intelligent to me.

Are serious watch shoppers looking at alternative manufacturers in this price level? Yes, one can get 3 times the OP for $13K. My Gawd....

It's true, always has been: "there's a sucker born every minute..." Kill the buzz; use your heads.

I think you are correct. I don’t see a sudden or massive correction.

A year ago (when Corona starting hitting hard) every other post was about bursting bubbles and people predicting a market crash. They were so excited about the coming plunge. Was a big turn off.

It’s all tied to the economy my brother. I promise. As soon as the economy recedes so will demand for luxury items including Rolex.

No coming back to MSRP until there is a series of changing events which totally draw people attention and interest from luxury watches. Even the early part of the pandemic (which is a globally changing event) saw a dip or stagnation in prices - 5711 at 50K and staying there for weeks, aquanaut at 30K, BLRO at 14-15k, 116500 staying where it was. But never even close to MSRP.

Bro I've been going nuts over this, trying to get the 41 for me and my wife. The ad tells me it's really hard, they don't lie to me, they obviously get some here and there, but the hype is real, and I have bought into it and I've been eating it up the past four months... Then I saw Mark Wahlberg wear it on Instagram and I just about died.

If you told me 6 months ago that I would be begging for an oyster perpetual 41 after acquiring the stainless steel daytona, I would have laughed in your face. How does Rolex know how to do this to me/us?!

Why not buy a Doxa200 Sub. available for a tenth of the Grey prices for an OP 41, in very much the same colours.

Sorry to tell you but most economies are turning up, not receding. One reason is that COVID cases, hospitalizations and fatalities have turned rather sharply down. Another is that the best companies are doing spectacularly well.

The only thing that turns me off from Rolex now incoming this incoming that, prices are crazy, wheres the supply, etc. And that's pretty much everyday now.

Anyone who pays a cent over MSRP on a current production Rolex is getting bamboozled.

I’ll tell you what. I’ll mark my calendar to come back to this thread in six months and we’ll see who is right. I hope I’m wrong. But I doubt it.

Plus I doubt very seriously you’ll see the market continue to grow when capital gains taxes go back to the levels they were at in 2015 when they were plenty of Rolex in the cases.

I’m glad I bought my 39mm OP when I did. I would never spend $12,000 on a OP.

It really is extraordinary. I remember, not too long ago, when a 36mm OP was a sleeper...it would languish in the case day after day, in the shadow of the Datejust.

I bought one, with a silver "3-6-9" dial, in 2013. It was around 5K. It seemed like a bargain after buying a Daytona the year before. An "entry" level Rolex...

And, I remember, when Explorers were suddenly hard to come by, that the OP, 36 or 39, were still readily available, albeit in traditional colors like silver, blue, black...

It seems to have begun with the Daytona then spread to other lines, one by one, this incredible demand, leaving ADs with barren cases and demand creating unprecedented opportunities for grey dealers and even individual owners looking to sell a suddenly rare commodity.

Scarcity has long been understood as a powerful psychological inducement and sales technique. Combine that with social media and outside factors...such as Covid, with "lockdowns" causing canceled vacations and other difficult to live with feelings such as boredom, loneliness, frustration, whatever...and it's the perfect storm.

Perceived scarcity amplifies demand...demand eventually translates into actual scarcity...which snowballs into ever increasing demand, and ever shrinking availability.

The curious thing is that it seems to be unique in its application to Rolex, at least as compared to Breitling and Omega.

I wonder the percentage of Rolex watches being purchased from ADs are end users? I hope most are, if not, prices are being inflated by the middle guy (whoever they are). I am ready for Rolex to control the lottery/waiting list to purchase their watches. Go fully online, cut out ADs all together. At least a true lottery would give a regular guy (like me - not willing to pay grey prices and can’t buy a ton of other unwanted watches or jewelry from ADs in order to purchase what I want) a chance to purchase Rolexes to wear, not resell to the grey market. Give it time, we’ll get there one day.

They're still selling the traditional colour dials for the OP's , nobody is being forced to buy a Yellow or red one

They can keep it. I prefer a classic 36mm, SS DateJust.

The new OP41 colors, with the exception of the blue, and silver dial, look gaudy to me.

Now I’m convinced the prices are just nuts!

All I want is an explorer 1 or maybe an air-king. These are watch enthusiasts’ pieces, just plain boring tool watches.
I get that sub, gmt, daytona demands a high premium if non watch people are buying them up but an airking/explorer 1?
The way its going for me I will give up waiting.
For me, being that its the first Rolex, I d like to get it at an AD so I go through the entire process at least once.
I would buy a watch from a grey dealer for a discount but a $1200 premium on a new airking, I thought ppl hated these. Also $2200 on a 214270...
But obviously someone is buying them.
I am not sure how this journey ends for me.
ADs will continue to call their vip customers to offer them whatever model before they call me. VIPs will off course buy them to flip for slight profit if they don’t want it. The vip/ad relationships will continue and the cycle goes on. So, unless you already have a relationship with an AD that train has passed, no way you ll catch up now but I digress...

So... since there is some debate on this, let’s start down the opinion path.

Are we destined to return to available watches at MSRP in the next six months? One year? Two years? Five? Ever?

Hey, maybe this is a good topic for a survey.

I walked into my AD yesterday and there was an Airking in the case. Older gentlemen walked in and bought it in about 10 minutes. They’re out there, just need luck and timing.
