Yes, February 2001, my Yachtmaster. It was super expensive but I got a discount of 20%. more or less with cash. Not a wire transfer, but literal cash. We went to the bank and nearly cleaned them out; they told me to give them the heads-up if I did that again, as they typically didn’t keep that much cash on hand.
I still remember how excited I was to actually get a Rolex. The Yachtmaster was so beautiful, sparkly and shiny, with its PCL, platinum bezel and platinum dial. It was just before Valentine’s Day before our 10th anniversary. We’d gotten married while still in school, so my wedding ring is a plain gold band. I remember telling my husband that the Rolex was “my diamond,” and that he should give me a gold Yachtmaster for our 20th! That didn’t happen, as I wore it every day for 20 years. I have its box and papers, and don’t ever plan to sell it. I know I cherished it more than I would’ve a diamond ring. Only a WIS understands the little daily thrills of checking the time by looking at a nice watch. Everyone else thinks we’re crazy, or trying to show off. To me, it’s appreciating a fine timepiece. I got my first watch literally in preschool, and have loved watches all of my life. Back in 2001, most high end watches for women, whether a Cartier or a Patek Twenty-4 (my runner up choice) were quartz. I’m certain that no other comparable watch would’ve survived what I put my YM through. Rolex really is the “real deal” as far as durability. Looking back, I’m pretty sure that even with the discount, it cost more than a 16610 or 16710 did then! |
