With the 'John Mayer' Daytona there was an actual ground zero of when and why the hype started.

I'd say that before the Hulk Hype other than new releases and of course the steel Daytona Current Rolex watches usually sold under retail price.
Even the Kermit wasn't really difficult to get when it was discontinued.

I'd just like to know Why the Hulk model started all this Rolex Hype ?

2007, I offered myself my first Sub 16610LN for 3800€ at an AD, for financial reasons, I saw myself obliged to part with it during the 2008 crisis 😢 (sold for 3100€). 2009, I want to have fun with color again, a Sub 16610LV is available at Dubail Paris, I buy it for 4300€ (a 10% discount was given to me that day). I parted with it in 2013 for €5,000. 2016 I buy the Hulk while 80% of Sub wearers don't like it! Purchase value 8300€. She is always with me.
TODAY,
The 2007 16610LN cost €11,000
The 2009 16610LV costs €18,000.
The 2016 Hulk costs €24,000.
It's getting hard to afford a Sub like I did 15 years ago.

I'll play

Bought in 2016 in memory of losing my border collie, they weren't popular in fact when I was talking to the AD and I said I want the green dial not the black she went "oh oh, yes can get one of those easily".

No idea why it became so popular, it’s not for me, never was.

Many buy for fomo. So many second hand watch dealers nowadays

yeah, that comment could go either way. I would hope it means how awesome it is for a working Joe to wear a reminder of the value of thrift and hard work; for a man who survived worldwide depression and world war to connect to things of beauty & refinement, and to desire to pass it on to his son along with a hard won better life.

I wear no green at all. In fact I wear more black and blue.

Doesn’t stop me wearing my hulk or Starbucks. You don’t have to colour coordinate them.

Never understood why people thought they had to match their watches to their clothes.

The Hulk has been my daily for the past 5 years and never once did I feel it looked out of place.

I bought the Hulk simply because I didn't want a TT or Black Sub, and couldn't afford PM. Also green being my favorite color doesn't hurt. I wasn't able to afford the watch until last year paid $20.8k no regrets.

I have bought/sold/traded the Hulk numerous times and have always made good money off them even before this current market took over. The other factor is I have always enjoyed owning and wearing them. I am in my current Hulk for about 10k and I bought it on speculation it would be discontinued. Low and behold it was and the price has marched up. Usually at 100% profit I would say it is a no brainer to sell but now I am at 200% profit to move it. It will get there and then I will either put up or shut up. I think it is great that the watches are doing so well but it has killed some of my joy in wearing the watches as the values make it difficult not to be aware all the time. There is also a cost of ownership, insurance, safe, alarm, etc. I am just rambling now so I will stop. The Hulk is great. Even if I am destine to sell and admire from afar.
Great post William. I do agree and I am in at $8500.00 in 2018 I think but really like the piece and have not sold still in the stable

I was lucky to get mine back at Nov 2017 when it's already slightly on the fly. Catched a FB private sale post for a "watch only" deal at around MSRP, and I hit the button and called the guy right away. I knew I have to be quick coz there were like 5 guys after me also posting they wanted to buy. Luckily the seller kept his promise and we made a quick face to face deal within hours (interestingly, since its a "watch only" scenario, together we went to a nearby pawn shop pretending to sell it and asked for price. So logically if its fake, the pawn shop would not take it). Then after having "free verification" from the pawn shop, I became the happy owner of the "hulk".

The current Rolex secondhand market is as crazy as it gets. No one knows when the bubble will burst so its always important to get a watch u really love so that no matter what happens in terms of its value, u can still enjoy wearing it!

Prob sold in fewer quantities than the ln. It is a fine watch. No better or worse than the 116610ln. Also grays can charge whatever they want to set the market. I can see them listed 25-30k+. Anyone actually buying these though? Tough for me as the 126lv is a way better option IMO.

I gave it away for the 5711. I basically moved from one hype to the most hyped. Lol

Women have their diamond ring, or multiple jewelry options that they can pass down to their offspring as heirlooms, men only have one thing—their watch— so I can understand people would save to buy a nice watch to pass down to their son.

It’s good that you passed on it for the next person who would love to own it. There are many who would have flipped it. I am sure that AD had a list of interest buyers who would have loved to own that watch and yet they offered it to someone who never asked for it.

Asians (especially mainland Chinese) like the color green. You have a huge growth of Chinese middle and upper middle class with increased demand for luxury items like Rolex and especially the green sub — fueled by some famous chinese actor/pop singer wearing it on tv. Chinese tourists have been know to visit AD’s and buying multiple watches for personal use but mainly for resale back in China. This might be contributing to the scarcity of the hulk.

I never did either, but some will never understand the difference between "matches" and "goes with".

That said, I can't imagine ever wanting a watch with that much green. It's just not me.

Wrangler and/or Sears may be partially to blame

Why does every bit of hype have to blamed on Asia? The US is the largest market for Swiss watches in the world.

It’s just generic fomo hype begetting more fomo hype. Across every market.
