I got a scratch on my watch from my black lab Ruby when she was a puppy and was play biting my hand and got my watch. I lost her last may while she was 7 years old to cancer. I look at the scratch often and remember the fun we had.

So no offense OP but you have no idea what you’re talking about. Scratches can carry memories and bring back some great times.

As of now, 3,313 innocent Ukrainians have died, alongside 4,641 Ukrainian service members defending their country from an unprovoked attack while over 3,000,000 Ukrainian women and children have been forced to flee their homes.

We get that OP’s issue is a “first world problem,” but this is heavy. Don’t forget you’re on the same forum we’re all on doing the same thing we’re all doing.

…and I’m on Rolex forums posting about luxury watches. There, I finished the sentence for you.

I think Eddy the OP really likes nice watches. Prior to changing his photo from himself to a watch we got a chance to see that he is a youngster. To many of us, our Rolex is a watch. It’s a nice watch. Tells time. They are very nice watches. These are not the nicest things we own. We can afford many and have other nice things. Our watch is not our prized possession in our homes. If having a scratch on a watch seems horrible then keep the watch in the case and polish it every now and then and enjoy it that way. But don’t forget that it’s a watch. Many have the same watch. It’s not a piece unique. It’s a factory production watch that tells time. It does it well and is nice to look at at the same time. If it is your most prized possession then I feel that you have over spent. Peace.

I'd say my watches are pretty high up on my list of prized possessions (aside from some things with sentimental value like family photos). Other things on that list include my home and some vintage cameras.

Did I overspend?

Did I overspend? Not really, tbh I didn’t even feel it. I think this was blown out of proportion and maybe the tone of the thread asked for it lol. All my watches are prize possessions because there was a lot thought behind the purchase and it marked a time in my life. I think it comes down to preferences, I like my watches mint. Just like I make an effort to take the best care of everything I own…

I wondered how many of you have your iPhone Naked?

Maybe some breathing exercises? I'm a yoga teacher, in NYC no less. Also, is anyone doing these heinous things (wearing them and living their lives?) to your watches? No? Then why do you care?

My GMT BLNR is turning 7 years old this year. It is filled with beautifully mixed in scratches that all sort of blend into one. I probably have to service it soon but Im not sure i want it to look all shiny again. Am I weird? Maybe but I love it the way it is and am proud of the journeys its been on with me. And somehow the more worn it gets the more I appreciate it.

There seems to be 3 camps trending in reference to appearances in watch condition and preservation.

1) I want mine looking new forever, protect at all cost.

2) small scratches will happen and I expect it to happen.

3) I don't care about scratches or dings, the more the better.

People who own, wear and enjoy there watch are entitled to wear and care for them ever how they please. It's their watch. Who are we to judge? I myself gravitate in camp 2. Having said that, The very reason I prefer a brushed tool watch and avoid PLC's at all cost.

Are we talking like this is one of those PPF wrap type things or once in while get it cleaned up?

If you are wrapping subs in bubble wrap and leaving watches like GMT’s and Explorers in a safe or box and not on the wrist because you’re afraid of scratches and it’s not going to have the bling like the day you picked it up from the AD, with all respect in the world, I feel bad for you.

And I would hardly compare scratches on a watch to a dent in a new car, that’s silly. I don’t even think about scratches on my watch but I am the type to absolutely have dents in my car fixed. I just don’t think they are analogous.

This is all of course just in my opinion.

I also daily 911 and theres a similar heated daily debate over on that forum that you could sub in the item and it’s the exact same banter.

If its a rare vintage piece with massive appreciation or upside by keeping miles low and I do mean massive, I get it. Porsche 911R, 356, Paul Newman Daytona type stuff. (Tiffany OP) Kidding….

The end result is probably just, different stokes for different folks.

So no offense OP but you have no idea what you’re talking about. Scratches can carry memories and bring back some great times.
Hey manny,,,
Sorry to hear your labby passed on,,,,
I have a near 4 yr old labby and when he was a pup put a corker of a scratch on my ten day old DJ36,,,,,
I always smile when I look at it ( when I can get it off the missus wrist,,which is becoming increasingly more difficult these days lol)
and come service time may ask them to not polish out that mark,,solely because of the wonderful memory of a over demanding puppy wanting to play tug,,,,,,

it's always funny to me when people explicitly express frustration with a thread, yet can't help but comment and therefore breathe more and more life into it.

Let me play both sides. I don't like scratches. Might even hate them. If the watch was meant to look scratched it would be bead blasted and stonewashed. I've seen plenty of watches, tools, knives and jewelry with that type of finish and I freakin love it!

True utilitarian look, feel and function.

Everyone makes fun of the sticker kits, and I get it. It's sort of absurd. However, there's no better looking version of your watch than the first day you buy it brand new. In theory if they could figure out a way to perfect the protective film on a watch the way they've done so on automobiles, I'd have no problem with it.

If you're concerned about losing money over scratches that's one thing, but if you simply want to preserve the original polished look of your watch that's different.

All that said, I've worn my watches day to day to the park with my kids, vacations, adventurous work trips, etc. and I have plenty of scratches and marks to prove it.

I've never once celebrated getting a scratch, however I don't always notice when it happens. To me there's value in knowing after a 2 week vacation with the family, i got to enjoy my watch without a care in the world. Having my kids see my watch on my wrist to literally do it all is something I grew up with my dad. and it's a huge part of why I love this hobby. I believe these are the general "memories" people are talking about when they sensationalize scratches.

There's no room in this for obsessing over scratches. At a certain point it just might not be the right watch or hobby for you, and that's fine.

My dad wore his 1970's explorer 2 every day throughout my entire childhood. He built houses for my family and we traveled the world together while he wore it. One day he took it off and now he wears a timex everyday. Is that sad? to many of you, maybe. Not to him, he doesn't give a sh**. He still buys watches, mostly they sit in a safe. Everyone enjoys this hobby in different ways. Once people realize there's no one way to enjoy this hobby everyone will be much more content.

Well thanks a lot for ruining a perfectly ridiculous thread with a common sense response that probably most on here will agree with...me included. Geez...some people!

It really goes to show you that just because you have enough money to own a nice watch...that does not mean you have any sense.
