Yes, you are crazy to make that trade.
However... if you must - then I will make that trade with you. |

For now, I'll plan on holding onto the Lange and hope to pick up a Daytona at retail (I've been on "the list" for 6 years anyway) or if prices drop - I've never paid over retail for a watch - that might bother me more than anything else! |

Your circus and your monkeys. You will do as your heart tells you and your mind will confirm it. I love Lange, but I also love Rolex. Do it if it makes you happier ...

I’d rather own the Daytona. Not a fan of that particular Lange. Of course Lange is “Higher quality though”

I am not a big fan of ALS so I would trade that for any Daytona any day. I’d also even trade it for any Hublot. That’s the beauty of watch collecting, different strokes for different folks.

There are 3 main issues.
1. Market value. Which watch is worth more on the current market. 2. Availability. Which is the piece that you can get if you want it (and at what price?) 3. Personal preference. Which watch do YOU prefer In terms of market value and availability......you can get that Lange 1 for about the same price as you can get a 116500 or....even for a little less without much difficulty so as far as 1 and 2 go it's kind of a wash. Then it boils down to which watch do you personally prefer and NOBODY can answer that other than you! There are other side issues like maintenance costs and wearability. I'd much rather service a Rolex than a complicated Lange and I'd much rather wear the Rolex daily than a Lange on a delicate leather strap. For me the Rolex is a much more desirable piece than the Lange which is all about "horology" while the Daytona is just watch porn. |

There’s no right answer, but there are people who will think you’re an idiot for making the trade. Who’s to say if they’re right?

I get that the Daytona, or any Rolex is incredible durable. However, I am willing to bet that 99% of us have a day to day routine that the Lange easily can withstand.
I have owned both the 116520 and the 116500 and have used them as a daily wearer. My current daily is a Lange, and the Lange holds up just as well for me. Of course YMMV. |

As a daytona owner myself (116500 white dial), I am advising you against making that move. I don't think the 116500 should be worth current market prices. Don't get me wrong, it is my favorite watch that I own, but I was fortunate enough to pay retail for it and wouldn't pay more than that for it. In the end of the day, it is just a nicely finished stainless steel rolex. Yes, it's iconic and practical and desirable and all that, but the lange is much more sophisticated and interesting. Just my 2 cents.

It is much easier to wear a sport watch like the Daytona 116500 for dress than to wear a dress watch on a leather strap for sport. You can't take a Lange 1 to the beach, gym, or a lot of other places without risking damage to it and looking out of place. Also I would think that the Lange will be much more easily damaged doing a lot of things that the Rolex would sniff at. Not many people I know wear true "dress watches" on leather straps all that often these days. I have a few pieces and they rarely see the light of day because even when I do dress up I tend to wear my blue Nautilus, Daytonas, or Sky Dweller with a suit. The leather strap pieces just seem....boring to me.

Am I crazy to trade this Lange even-up for a black dial 116500LN Daytona?
Plenty of People with a Daytona would take your Lange in a heart beat.

I've had a couple of people reach out with Panda and Black dial Daytonas and I'm waffling again |

One is a masterpiece of work of the finest details. gold case, silver dial. complex mechanism of world time, date, etc.
The other is a mass-produced steel watch that had about 1/100 the effort to put together. No. |

That Lange is not nearly as versatile, go with what you’ll want to wear for your lifestyle.

It depends what else you have and what you like to do and what your outlook is on the Daytona.
I don’t ever see myself having a greater than 100k watch collection and I am interested in horology, finishing and trying to not to follow the herd - so that said I only see 1-2 Rolex in my ideal collection. While I think Rolex are great, I think that itch can be scratched for a lot less than 40k, especially with my own arbitrary constraints. If you have a huge collection and other great horologically significant pieces then its more academic and just a financial transaction. |

You would be trading a Rolls Royce for a Porsche Turbo.
