Yes, you are crazy to make that trade.

However... if you must - then I will make that trade with you.

Thanks to you all for your feedback and for talking me off the ledge. Of my current watches, I wear my Lange the most and work in a white collar environment. There is something about the asymmetrical dial that is mesmerizing. It catches my eye at every stoplight while driving. I may also look to trade it for white gold or platinum reference.

For now, I'll plan on holding onto the Lange and hope to pick up a Daytona at retail (I've been on "the list" for 6 years anyway) or if prices drop - I've never paid over retail for a watch - that might bother me more than anything else!

Your circus and your monkeys. You will do as your heart tells you and your mind will confirm it. I love Lange, but I also love Rolex. Do it if it makes you happier ...

I’d rather own the Daytona. Not a fan of that particular Lange. Of course Lange is “Higher quality though”

I am not a big fan of ALS so I would trade that for any Daytona any day. I’d also even trade it for any Hublot. That’s the beauty of watch collecting, different strokes for different folks.

There are 3 main issues.

1. Market value. Which watch is worth more on the current market.
2. Availability. Which is the piece that you can get if you want it (and at what price?)
3. Personal preference. Which watch do YOU prefer

In terms of market value and availability......you can get that Lange 1 for about the same price as you can get a 116500 or....even for a little less without much difficulty so as far as 1 and 2 go it's kind of a wash. Then it boils down to which watch do you personally prefer and NOBODY can answer that other than you!

There are other side issues like maintenance costs and wearability. I'd much rather service a Rolex than a complicated Lange and I'd much rather wear the Rolex daily than a Lange on a delicate leather strap. For me the Rolex is a much more desirable piece than the Lange which is all about "horology" while the Daytona is just watch porn.

There’s no right answer, but there are people who will think you’re an idiot for making the trade. Who’s to say if they’re right?

I get that the Daytona, or any Rolex is incredible durable. However, I am willing to bet that 99% of us have a day to day routine that the Lange easily can withstand.

I have owned both the 116520 and the 116500 and have used them as a daily wearer. My current daily is a Lange, and the Lange holds up just as well for me. Of course YMMV.

As a daytona owner myself (116500 white dial), I am advising you against making that move. I don't think the 116500 should be worth current market prices. Don't get me wrong, it is my favorite watch that I own, but I was fortunate enough to pay retail for it and wouldn't pay more than that for it. In the end of the day, it is just a nicely finished stainless steel rolex. Yes, it's iconic and practical and desirable and all that, but the lange is much more sophisticated and interesting. Just my 2 cents.

Yes it's true that the Daytona is basically a simple sports watch that has been hyped into the stratosphere price wise but it's popularity and desirability has been well established and is not ephemeral. A doodle by Picasso is worth far more than a much more "sophisticated and interesting" painting with great detail and craftsmanship by a lesser known artist and that's not going to change any time soon. We don't assign the values to these watches....the market does and right now a meteorite Daytona is going for 6-7+ times the new price from the AD and a SS Daytona 2-3 X while a very interesting and sophisticated /complicated JLC ....not so much. So back to the original poster.....get the watch you want and if the market values are similar making the trade is not a loss financially or a bad idea for you personally but it WOULD be a bad idea for someone who loves the Lange 1 and would wear it often. Why people feel compelled to give advice that reflects their personal taste and choices rather than advice based around the individual asking the questions interests and desires is beyond me.

That’s a very nice Lange. Although I prefer the Daytona over it, I wouldn’t trade it for a Daytona. I’d wait to get the Daytona at retail and enjoy that Lange in the interim.
I'd agree and also keep both if you can, but you may get more use out of the Daytona as the Lange is much more of a dressy watch. Tough call!

It is much easier to wear a sport watch like the Daytona 116500 for dress than to wear a dress watch on a leather strap for sport. You can't take a Lange 1 to the beach, gym, or a lot of other places without risking damage to it and looking out of place. Also I would think that the Lange will be much more easily damaged doing a lot of things that the Rolex would sniff at. Not many people I know wear true "dress watches" on leather straps all that often these days. I have a few pieces and they rarely see the light of day because even when I do dress up I tend to wear my blue Nautilus, Daytonas, or Sky Dweller with a suit. The leather strap pieces just seem....boring to me.

Am I crazy to trade this Lange even-up for a black dial 116500LN Daytona?

Plenty of People with a Daytona would take your Lange in a heart beat.

One is a masterpiece of work of the finest details. gold case, silver dial. complex mechanism of world time, date, etc.

The other is a mass-produced steel watch that had about 1/100 the effort to put together.

No.

That Lange is not nearly as versatile, go with what you’ll want to wear for your lifestyle.

Are you sure about that? In normal use the the Lange gives you two timezones, has a power reserve meter and tells you the date, and.....

the Rolex lets you measure how long you can hold your breath.

It depends what else you have and what you like to do and what your outlook is on the Daytona.

I don’t ever see myself having a greater than 100k watch collection and I am interested in horology, finishing and trying to not to follow the herd - so that said I only see 1-2 Rolex in my ideal collection. While I think Rolex are great, I think that itch can be scratched for a lot less than 40k, especially with my own arbitrary constraints.

If you have a huge collection and other great horologically significant pieces then its more academic and just a financial transaction.

You would be trading a Rolls Royce for a Porsche Turbo.
