I certainly have stirred up a lot of emotions with this thread... Everyone is entitled to their opinions, of course. Rick and everyone else, thank you for defending me from those that questioned my... integrity(?)... or whatever they were questioning by chastizing me. Dave, I'm with you on that post.... I spend thousands of dollars on a watch because I choose to spend my hard-earned currency on a fine timepiece, it just makes me feel good. Some people choose to spend their money on an expensive vehicle, or fine jewlrey, or pens, or whatever. I respect their fascnination with those items, (don't unerstand it but respect it). For someone to be on a Rolex Forum and state he doesn't understand/feels gulity about spending a lot of money on a watch I don't understand it. That's all I'll say, I don't understand it.
The (probably) last statement I'll make, is that reading some of those that were, shall I say, less then cordial about my post, I feel perhaps they didn't understand one thing that I'd like to make perfectly clear. I WAS NOT, nor will I EVER, question, chastize, berate, make fun of etc. an indivdual because they spent 100 dollars on a watch when I spent $10,000. That was NOT the point of this thread and those that read it that way I apologize for not being clear. If an individual purchases a $10 Timex, and they are comfortable and happy with that watch, more power to them and I respect their decision. It just bothered me that an individual was so PROUD, to be showing off a COUNTERFIT of a fine item. If he had shown me a 10 dollar Timex, and was just as proud, I would congragulate him, sincerely be happy for his purchase, and not feel superior in any way because I chose to spend more. I'm not that shallow of a human being. Whatever your opinions of me or the situation I related are, you are entitled, I just wanted to make the above point very clear. |

Atl, I'm not sure what you mean. Call me out? Everybody else has aired their opinion, am I not entitled to one myself? I sincerely apologize if my opinion has offended you or anyone else, I was simply being honest about my own feelings. I regret that. I suppose I do sometimes feel very guilty at what I spend on watches, I'm afraid that's part of my makeup and I can't seem to get over it. We are all different. I am lucky to have what I have and when I'm out at work, or socializing, I try not to appear smug, or to be mean to anyone who isn't so fortunate. Once again, sorry if I misconstrued what the OP was getting at, I think he just hit a nerve and I got on my soapbox. I am female and perhaps that colours my responses when I think somebody is being bashed just for having different tastes (or less income) than the rest of us. It is an emotive subject, I agree, I came over as a bit schoolmarmish.
Why am I on the forum? As an owner of various fine watches, including Rolex, I was delighted to find such a wonderful resource. I find the information here extremely valuable and very impressive. To the OP, thank you for your above clarification - that your issue was over counterfeiting only. Copyright infringement is a big part of my job, frustrating, time-consuming, but sadly a fact of life. If I let it get to me I would go mental! (-: Edit: To 'Quintessentially', I understand your point. I feel some of the wealthy classes although largely educated, may not necessarily be 'intelligent' buyers, but in the end who knows what the motivators are, my view is that fakes will always exist, for better or worse, so long as they're not palmed off as real I guess I'm tolerant. To 'USP45Tim', I enjoyed your post. I had a similar experience - I was given a fake when in college. I loved it. It broke. The only solution was to save up and get one that wouldn't break - via the AD, ouch to my bank-balance! Who knows, maybe the guy the OP encountered on the plane will end up doing the same thing? Regards, Lin |

Fakes are crap and so are the people wearing them. Both are maddening. Well done.

I agree - wearing of fakes just puts me off, and it supports counterfeiting, which is illegal for good reason. I can understand being angry about someone who's showing off about having a fake watch, but I personally try to save myself the angst and write them off as being foolish.... it has nothing to do with being poor or wealthy - it's a measure of character, IMO. I would never wear a fake anything - purse, watch, jeans, whatever. If I don't want to spend the money on the real thing, I'd choose a less expensive brand. I wore a Timex before buying my first Rolex.

I guess what scares me the most is that some of the fakes are SO good. I have seen even newer model Rolex watches and every detail is almost perfect, box, papers, tags.... the works. There are websites that pop-up that have copies of highend watches, handbags, sunglasses............ a week or a few days later the site is closed. They just change their site/name and keep selling fake stuff.
It makes me crazy too!

Don't be scared - whilst some look very good but they're still hit and miss - not a lot in the way of QC. Some purchasers get a 'good one' but often there are issues somewhere or other, with time-keeping, bits falling off etc. There's a lot of talk about Swiss movements being used in those reps, but they're not, they're Chinese copies which aren't subject to quality assessment. Therefore the buyer is getting something which will likely fail, is hard to repair, has absolutely no investment or resale value. The last point is interesting - because some of those fakes are very expensive. People don't always realise that it amounts to money down the drain. For this reason they have to be regarded as novelties. It's a cr*p-shoot. I know a watch-maker who has a huge collection - they're instrumental in helping him identify forgeries when people take stuff in for valuation purposes. |

The most shocking thing I have seen throughout this entire thread is that somebody, somewhere would wear a fake Rado!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with most of you, hate poeple wearing fakes and try to make it as real - BUT, think of it from a buyer's perspective, why spend $100-300 buying a fake rolex and telling EVERYONE and advertising it as a 'fake'?
Just be happy that YOU know you are wearing a REAL one. :) Honestly people who buy fake LV bags and Gucci bags are on the same boat. |
