These watches will be worth MSRP real soon.

If this is a military thing get the Rolex. Get the back of the watch engraved to commemorate the occasion and keep everything together. Box papers etc. keep the watch for years and then maybe sell it one day if you want… you will thank me if you follow my instructions

Go with your military suit on, impress upon them the connection.

The black submariner is not hard for regular clients to get. Just a matter of time.

If you're not ready to "lose" thousands of dollars on watches, then probably not the hobby for you.

Any other suggestions for a great tool watch.
Have you tried any of these on? One of the biggest problems on this forum is a deluge of people who have strong opinions about a variety of brands/watches that they have never tried on.

Prices are going down. I have seen some new subs in 13k range online. I believe they wil
Drop
Even more in the coming months. I also believe next year is going to
Get tough for a lot of people and business. What I am certain of is a new sub date has dropped thousands on the gray market the last few months. No doubt they will
Come down even more so just hang on a little longer. You might even get one at Retail next
Few months.

Lots of good points from others but stick to your roots...you'll appreciate it a lot more. In my opinion, they are getting easier to acquire for honest buyer's. You didn't come this far to ring the bell

Go gray and call it a day. Otherwise I will say Pelagos is the best Tudor out there. Wear it for a week and you’ll see. I dismissed this watch for YEARS and I’m smitten with how great it looks and it’s very comfortable. I bought it in a whim. I also have a 126 sub.

7 months isn't a crazy wait time so far in the current state of the market. I would continue to remind them of the military connection as much as possible. Try to make sure the manager knows whom you are.
When you travel, call ahead and scope out ADs. You may get lucky with that, too.

I phoned an AD every week for two months to get my Bloodhound AK in 2019. So.glad I did.
Wanted other Rolex for.a while, but the game got so crazy I got totally disgusted with Rolex. So I quit.
And I am glad I did. I got 8 watches now from different brands ranging from Hamilton to Grand Seiko. Still love the Rolex but don't want any other.
My favorite nowadays is an Hamilton Converter Air Zermatt I got. What a fantastic pilot watch. Longines are wonderful, but light.
Oris makes a solid watch with the Big Pilot Bronze.
Grand Seiko divers are just in another league than Rolex.
Tag Heuer Night Divers are really cool in the dark.

And I won't even start on the shifty 3235 movement I am so glad I haven't got.

Get yourself a used 31xx submariner. It won't let you down in a year like 50% of the new watches do with no known fix from Rolex.

It was a nice watchmaker. Now Rolex is nothing more than a fashion brand selling bad watches. They are not innovating anymore. All they care.about is money, and it shows.

With current market demand, for zero purchase history, I say simply WRITE off one year. Keep contact with AD , pop your head in once a month, take your wife or kid etc.

You should get something in a year...if not, flack that AD and go grey. 1st time I got my LV sub, it was with a 7 month wait (zero purchase history). I was in the same boat and then all of a sudden, AD called me with a "oh..are ya still interested in the sub cos I have one".

It’s fatigue. Also seeing so many models on the wrist of everyone makes it annoying as well. Not because I want to be unique, but it’s just boring to see it everywhere. Where is the variety?

OP, if I were in your shoes:

I would visit the nearest AD, express my interest, explain my situation and ask for a reasonable time frame without being pushy.

Then I'd limit my web browsing of the watch forums and social to the point I would be comfortable with, getting informed on features and pricing, without losing any sleep over not being able to instantly obtain the watch.

Meanwhile, as the desired reference does not command any huge premium pre-owned, I'd squirrel away a 20% markup on MSRP and decide if and when I've had enough of a wait.

Just a few months waiting? I've been waiting for years. (I'm never getting the call.)

So just buy grey. The watches haven't changed - that sub still iconic for many reasons. Expect to pay 1.3x-1x4 MSRP but you can move on with your life.

I was in a similar spot when I tried to get a Sub as my first entry into watches years ago. When the AD kept not having any stock to sell, or even to see to try on, I started looking around and eventually found something I liked a lot better. For me it happened to be an Omega Planet Ocean in Titanium.

I would posit that if fatigue is an issue, it's actually a good thing. It means when all is aid and done, perhaps a Sub is NOT really what you want.

It's like the advice seasoned watch collectors give you newbies....don't go overboard and buy 5 watches in a 6 month period. Take your time. Let your mind digest what you really want and don't want. Make focused and well thought out decisions.

I'm not saying you are a newbie....no that's not it.

I think for everyone, time gives you an opportunity to think through everything. When the initial hype and excitement goes away, do you still really want that watch?

If the time opens your eyes up to alternatives, even better. There are so many dive watches out there...literally hundreds and hundreds and all price levels. Arguably many are superior watches technically and/or aesthetically (but of course, a matter of opinion).

Look around. So many to choose from.

No. Fatigue can just mean being fed up with the games and $50k requirement to get "on the list." The sub is still the sub.

you will regret it a few months after if not sooner...wait...wait...you will not regret it...

7 months is not a long time...others have waited longer....

go to another AD and talk to them and tell them your story...just point out...the SubDate is the one any only....

good luck...and thank you for your service...

Pre-owned prices seem to be coming down some. Tread lightly because in my experience trying to find a substitute doesn't scratch the itch and you will end up spending more money only to be back to square one....wanting a Submariner but also owning the substitute.

Indeed. And the "substitute" watch will be a total sunk cost - any other watch will only fetch a fraction of what you spent so don't count on trading in or selling it without losing a lot.

Thanks for everyone's advice. Agree, a substitute probably would no work out. I guess my only real choice is to wait for the call or go grey market. Right now I am not willing to pay the grey market cost. So I guess I will have to wait. Just wish we had more than one AD in our area.

First of all, I don't believe in the substitute.
You'll always have your Sub on your mind, even with something else on your wrist.
Already you find faults with the others besides !

Secondly, yes the positioning is more luxury than before, but it's aesthetics and an evolution of materials.
It still remains a robust diver with all the appropriate specificities.

Thirdly, the thing is, this icon is perfection and you are by far the only one to notice it. So you have to be patient because the store drops are what they are.
I reassure you, once it is your turn, you will have forgotten everything about this phase.

However, it is not a rarity, know that with a few extra pennies, you have it right away...
The oldest versions are also available. For what you say about regretting this more "tool" era, consider this possibility.

I also think that some Fink’s stores are different than others. Without getting into specifics, I would think that Raleigh or Roanoke would be better than Durham … as an example.

Just wait it out. You're just going to be stuck with a 2nd place substitute and one day the call will come and you'll wish you waited.

Second place in hype? Maybe. Second place in quality of watch? Probably not.
