Rolex is one of the most recognized symbols of wealth and success in the world! Even by people who don’t wear nor understand watches.
“Some” of these people, couldn’t tell the difference between a Salvatore Ferragamo fashion watch and a Patek Phillipe. But, they recognize a Rolex every time they see one! |

I accept that PP can sell their watches without any further effort but I would have thought PP would back their product with a five year warranty. |

Interesting question Paul. I was no doubt influenced many decades ago when watchmakers who serviced my omegas and other brands pointed me to consolidate and move to Rolex, and similar remarks made by professional friends who appraised estates. Their focus was in the main to point me toward simple, well made robust watches that I could wear every day with little need for service.
But I am sure "value" remarks were made by these people at the time and incorporated by me. Different times, and value was used differently. Back then, value was not appreciation or an investment issue. It was having a decent residual amount and not taking to big a haircut when trading for another watch. A habit I have had difficulty breaking. And of course there is the fact that Rolex is the king of marketing. How much has that affected me? At some level, I am sure it has. We all like to think we are immune to marketing, but it works.

I think both Rolex and PP are really good at what they do and the difference is negligible at the end of the day. In the end it all comes down to the buyer. Some Rolex are better than some PP by design and vice versa. To make a blanket statement that PP is better than all Rolex watches is fairly ignorant and unfair.

I don't understand why this conversation is being shared. Nothing remarkable about it

A Rolex is a one watch candidate in a way that a PP is not. A Rolex is just built different,y while a Pp is more delicate, even from the sports line. I love both but if I could have only one I think I would go with a Rolex. As much as I love others I know I always go back to Rolex.

It’s a big like comparing a Mercedes G-Wagon to a Rolls Royce Cullinan. Most never see the trail, but the G-Wagon is a bit more suited to abuse, while the Cullinan is more exclusive and refined.

I guess I'm not sophisticated enough, but I don't really care for the looks or sizes of PP.

I appreciate the Patek horology including finishing, but my lifestyle would render it non-operational within 2 weeks.

Must be an exciting lifestyle! My Aquanauts have swum, shallow dived, golfed, played racquetball, rock climbed, skied - with never a complaint. No doubt Rolexes are tougher but for most activities no difference.

I have tried to like Patek but just don’t care for the brand. My GS watches are finished just as well.

Great thread idea. These and similar issues have been on my mind.
I’m contemplating trading my Patek 5196g toward a SS Daytona. I admire the Daytona for all the reasons discussed in this forum at length. Like my 39mm Explorer and 36mm DD, it’s also one of the few Rolex models that fits my smaller wrists. The Daytona is robust and fits my lifestyle better at the moment. The 5196g is a fine watch with excellent finishing. Certainly more elegant, and perhaps even more timeless than the Daytona. It’s likely the WIS pick between the two. |

Too many weird douchbags into rolex these days. I can't really afford to be into Patek instead of rolex, but I frequently entertain the idea of liquidating my rolex collection and moving to tudor and other less recognizable, but high quality, brands.

Why do people continue to compare Rolex to Patek / High Horology pieces? The 2 could not be more different and are in entirely different leagues. It is really silly to even compare.
Patek and other brands like ALS are the upper echelon of high horology and are simply art on the wrist that also happens to be a nice watch. Rolex is a mass-produced watch that is highly reliable, well designed, affordable luxury (at msrp) when compared to other high horology brands, and has a brand name with very high cache. Any watch can be a 1 watch that lasts a lifetime. Rolex doesn't have a patent on that experience. Sure, if you are an avid diver and MUST wear a "luxury" timepiece when diving then a watch that can handle that water resistance is a must for you... You could also be an avid diver, wear a dive computer or one of the many digital watches designed specifically for diving, and slap on your Patek when not diving. All depends on the person. |

That’s a absurd comparison. Very familiar with PP and it has some excellent finishing but the sum of its parts is not magical. It all boils down to preference as the buying demographic can easily afford either.
