In the case of this particular watch, it's sitting there until someone comes in and buys a 5 carat engagement ring. Then the SA will say, we have a watch you might want to see.

No one cares if the watch was touched by other human hands. That's just insane that people think, no human hand should touch my watch before I buy it. It's not a steak.

Someone is going to be very happy when they get the call

Rolex collectors are a funny old bunch.

We love these items for many reasons, but a big factor for me and many others is their durability, and ability to withstand most of what life throws at them, in some of the harshest conditions known to man. And then, we all cry like a bunch of babies when another human dares to touch it, before it’s even been purchased!

I’d be more than happy to make someone else’s day, if they got to try and and fall in love with a piece that could’ve been allocated to me.

Tell me now naysayers, you call into your local AD and they wink at you and head out the back, next thing you know there is a John Mayor Daytona in your hand for you to try on. Are you really going to say no because it’ll end up being someone else’s watch? No, you’re trying that beauty on and taking pictures while you’re at it.

You're lucky, you can try every day for that perfect picture

Couldn’t agree more! Well said Mystro.

NO ONE said anything negative about the OP’s actions, and I think everyone enjoyed his pics. You, and others, misunderstood our reaction to his story.

No, but as usual the naysayers where out in force (you included) suggesting the AD had committed some kind of crime for showing a watch that THEY OWN to potential future customers.

Tell me you’ve never tried a watch on at an AD Kat, that was eventually bought by someone else?

Agree. But I'm sure you have tried on watches that weren't just display pieces either. At any AD other than Rolex, where watches are actually available in the store to purchase, the SA's encourage you to try on their watches. When I bought my speedy I probably tried on 3 or 4 different variations before I decided on the one I wanted. And the one I did end up with was tried on by many, many before me. And see nothing wrong with that. And prior to 2018, you could try on non-display pieces that at a Rolex AD as well.

Wow! This thread really grew legs, and I was responsible for that happening. My thought process was that when the AD received “the John Mayer Daytona”, in particular, they already knew, to whom they would allocate it. So, knowing it was meant to be “Joe Smith’s Daytona”, they allowed random enthusiasts to play with it, before Joe could get there to pick it up. That did not sit well, with me. If I were Joe, I would not want others playing with my watch, before I had that chance. That was my entire point, and apparently others agreed.
Having said that, lively discussions, about our shared passion, is what this forum is all about. To the OP, good job showing us these two beauties. We all love good Rolex pics!

If there was a 116508 waiting for me, I wouldn't care if it was tried on by Charlie Sheen after a date night.

And one of issues discussed here was that the watch may not have been allocated to anybody, so nobody had dibs on it. One would think if someone got the call on that particular YG Daytona they would be there in moments if not seconds to pick it up. ADs typically tell customers the stuff in the safe is taken, if it is seen by customers. What else can they say, if they are just holding the watch for the right customer and deal which will maximize the profits to the store and will not sell it to a good customer standing right there.
