I’ll start off by saying that I live in a low crime, small town and I use a safe that is not particularly heavy, but it is bolted to the floor. For the safe experts here, I guess you would say it’s not a safe at all. And that’s fine. It is hidden. I have a monitored security system in my home. Police respond quickly after being notified by my monitoring company. I’m really not expecting George Clooney and the cast of Ocean’s 11 to come in and pull off the great watch heist. I think everyone needs to evaluate where they live, what they have, police support, and everything else that’s been listed in this thread, and make prudent decisions that best fit their individual needs. While a maxed out, complete security strategy is no doubt the best answer, it may very well be overkill (and excessively or prohibitively expensive) for the vast majority of people here on this forum (and everywhere else). The various components that have been listed on this thread can easily be applied in an à la cart strategy as anyone sees fit. It’s really not one size fits all. Be safe.

There are a lot of things I have insured that I still don't want stolen, even if the monetary value is reimbursed. Further, I have a lot of items and records that are confidential that I also would not want stolen or damaged--passport, medical records, home ownership records, insurance documentation, bank cards, checks, cash, other jewelry from family members, original family photos, ownership records, certain heirlooms, hard drives with family photos/files etc.--and I think that applies to most people. I have safes that are designed to last longer than a thief will have before police arrive, and are also designed to protect the contents should the house burn to the ground. I used to sell safes. You do not have to spend a fortune to get a high-quality safe. And alarm systems aren't very expensive, either. If one has a high-value Rolex collection and they want a safe that is matched to such a collection, they should be looking at a high-security safe to pair with their alarm system. |

For those with bolted, large safes … how are you concealing them, if at all?

Get two safes. One is easier to find and has some fake watches and fake jewelry inside. The other safe is hidden and holds your real watches. |

For the most part, I don't. If someone is coming over to work on the house, I may put a cover over the larger one to avoid flat out advertising what it is, but if someone breaks into the house when I am not home, they'll quickly find the safes. But the probability of them getting into them is extremely small, as they are safes that are designed to withstand a forced entry attempt.
