That being said, I just came back from Rolex Canada (it is just a quick subway ride from my office). She ballparked me $2500 for the following:

1. New Insert
2. New Crown + Tube
3. Polish + Service
4. New Bracelet
5. New Crystal

They did have their main watch repair gentleman (sorry, I don't know what the techincal term is and I can't remember what she did call him) that came out to see the watch. He was confident that it would come out looking as new. He mentioned the deep dents could likely be buffed in a way that would make them nearly unnoticable.
There you go: $2500 to fix it plus the $3400 you paid would put you at $5900, well above what you'd pay for a BNIB one, let alone the price for which you could get a high caliber used piece.

The rest is definitely an RSC job.

During a RSC service bands run around $500 or less.

I once bought a Bose stereo system on the bay. The seller said it was brand new, not a factory refurb. he was in canada somewhere. I did the transaction and he got paid. the, I heard nothing for days, like three days. I kept sending emails and not hearing a thing. finally, he sent me the tracking number. I checked the package tracking and it said something like 27 lbs. The bass unit itself weighed more than that. I was now wondering if he actually sent me the full system. In the end, I got a full system but it was a factory refurb. Every piece in it was labeled as a refurb and, he had opened the box to make sure everything was packed fine before shipping. So, he knew it wasn't new as advertised. I posted that as a complaint on the bay and the seller said he would refund me 100 bucks. That was his posted response. Guess who never saw that 100 bucks folks? I still ended up saving about 350.00 based on the Bose store pricing of a refurbbed system, but, now no warranty so, hardly worth the hassle. iIwould never buy an expensive product on ebay again. I want to friggin touch and smell it before I pay for it. The exception is, some retail establishments also have ebay stores. If I happen to purchase at the retail store and find out their ebay name, that is a different story.

Wow, I hate to see this. You're probably looking at around $1200 to repair the watch, maybe more. wouldn't waste a minute of their time at the RSC for an estimate, as you'll have way too much in it. A very nice 2000-2006 Seadweller can be found for the low $4000 range, complete with accessories.

The case is pretty beat up, which would bother me, as it would be polished heavily to bring it back, and most buyers want their cases all there with minimal polishing.

I agree with JJ! Refund, what a POS, too much trouble for what it's worth. Who wants to wear an abused piece!

Hope you get your money back.

That watch looks like what most on TRF would call a "Beater".

What was the previous owner doing with it? It's all scratched up to s#$t!

Your estimates to restore this watch are not taking into consideration that the case may be compromised and water/moisture could have already entered and attacked the mechanism.

You'll end up spending another $3000 to get it up to snuff. Add this to your original purchase price and you could have bought a brand new one and still had money in your pocket.

Send it back ASAP!

That is such a shame! All the many faults you listed should have been carefully described and disclosed fully by the seller. I am glad that you used Amex to pay and it was done through Ebay at least you have some ways to cancel or chargeback if this scammer decides to give you a run around... what a POS!
Personally I will try to always buy from here on TRF as you you would not have to worry about a situation like yours.

I agree with what most are saying - REFUND!! There is still the as yet unaddressed issue with the engraved caseback. Now "good condition" may be subjective, but an engraved back NEEDS to be disclosed, so in my opinion this watch was misrepresented on this fact alone.

Sorry for your troubles.

Pain in the a** to say the least, though...

I have to disagree with your point about the seller. The watch has been heavily misrepresented. Normal use and a polish mean something totally different. This is "heavily used and damaged in the exterior but probably repairable".

If you got this on auction, then the only way people would have bid that high is the seller neglected to show the damage and "talked up"the condition, hence misrepresentation. If you bought it with BIN, then it was overpriced and misrepresented.

The seller is "shocked"? Really? I'm shocked that s/he has the gall to say that. I would check at the ebay and paypal rules of resolution to make sure you don't allow too much time to go by. If you wait too long you lose your right to dispute and the seller is likely stalling for this reason.

Make the point that you expect a refund NOW and if they don't comply go through paypal and get your money back. Then get a decent 2nd hand SD that will keep you happy.

As for not giving out the name of the seller, bear in mind the sale was grossly misrepresented to start with. This is not an honest seller.

There is a diff between well used and abused. This watch clearly looks abused. It is only worth half of what you paid, if that. Ask for a refund and as soon as you get the $$, you pick up the watch and hit the seller on the head with it to knock some sense into him... also expose hi ebay ID so those of us with ebay accounts, we can send him nasty emails and he feels the pressure and we also want that bastid to be in the WATCHOUT section here at TRF .....you also need to contact paypal immediately because you want your discontent in writing ASAP ... the seller might stall like said above but all you can do is have your dissatisfaction on paper asap ..... I think paypal will give you back about $2000 ... the remaining balance you gotta fight with the credit card company....DO IT NOW!!! OTHERWISE THE SELLER WILL BLAME THE DAMAGES ON YOU!!!!

Sorry for your bad experience. It is ridiculous and the Watch is far off the mark in terms of description. THe seller should take the Watch back and pay YOU a GRAND for wasting your time and trouble. Cheer up.

I would suggest you return it and ask for a refund. If the seller gets difficult AmEx will take care of it for you. Don't worry. Too much work, hassle and stress for a junker. Get one in good condition and forget about sending to the RSC.

What happened to that watch? What would you have to with a Rolex to make it look like that? How could anyone beat on a Rolex like that?

I have G-Shocks for beating on, Rolex watches are not for THAT kind of treatment.

Since the OP used a credit card then he is most likely going to be fine. That doesn't take away the disgust and disappointment however. For $3400 that watch should not look like that, not Rolex should in fact.

If I bought it for $2k usd or less and bought it KNOWING it looked like that, then that is different entirely. He clearly "misrepresented" the condition of the watch. Unless he is legally blind I dont see how he could describe that what as he did.

Sorry about this OP, good luck with everything.

Please let us know what is going on.
I really do not understand why you are keeping the sellers name and auction hidden. I think we all would like to see the auction pics to see how he presented it.

Sorry to hear about your problem, as with the majority I would seek a refund if possible, I believe that your watch is going to be expensive to repair.
I was burned on an Ebay watch purchase once, not as expensive as yours, thank God, so I rebuilt the watch and wear it now on occasion to remind me; caveat emptor

"holy smokes!"

.....if not returnable. Certainly atleast $1000 back to you.
(if negotiable due to your forthcoming negative feedback for the Seller)

Hope ebay agrees with the misrepresentation findings.

I believe lack of "engraving" disclosure alone, should be reason for ebay's involvement in this matter. (JMO)
Keep us Posted & best regards.

Send it back! Cant for the life of me figure out why you are protecting the seller? This person screwed you over and you're giving him the benefit of doubt! Out him to all so no one else gets taken in by this turd, with a watch in that shape i'm sure the seller isnt reading post on a rolex forum! Dispute the sale and do the right thing by letting other watch collectors know to stay away from the seller!!

Totally agree here. It may save others here from making the same mistake if we know who to avoid.
