Again, trying to add to my collection & to celebrate my 40th bday. Already own Patek 5712/1a and Rolex DSSD (Blue face).

Was originally set on purchasing a Patek 5164R. Still think it is a great one to own. But then - I came across the Lange Datograph Up Down in pink gold. I have only read the amazing reviews and seen incredible pics but have never come across this watch in person.

Anyone own or have seen one in person? What are your detailed thoughts?

AND

Thoughts on Datograph vs Patek 5164R would be most appreciated. Only have a week to decide!

Many thanks.
Datograph for me. Its a no brainer.

We are a Lange AD so this stuff passes by sometimes.
Yes I did wind it and it was butter smooth & fantastic to look at

My wrist is bit over 7 1/2". But for this watch, I almost think the shape of the wrist is at least as important as the circumference when it comes to fit. I'm not sure if you've had a chance to try this on, but the case back (to accommodate that beautiful deep movement) causes this watch to sit a bit higher on the wrist than you may be used to. I see you have a 5146. I have owned that watch as well and I can tell you with no hesitation that the Dato Up/Down fits very, very differently. It works great for me, but less so for others.

The weight is substantial, but is something that I actually like a lot. The shape of my wrist and the fit of the strap makes this sit very well without moving around at all. But if you like to wear your watches a bit loose, then you may find it top-heavy. Again, it's perfect for me, but opinions vary among others. As always, trying one on is the only way to know for certain how you'll feel about it.

Hodinkee did a terrific "three on three" comparison of the Dato Up/Down, Patek 5170 and VC Harmony Chronograph. Jack Forster took the Dato and I find that his opinions very much mirror my own. As he's more well spoken and knowledgeable than I, you may like to check it out.

Thank you for the well thought of and detailed reply! Unfortunately, I've not had a chance to try this watch as yet. None of the local ADs or even the Lange boutique had one in stock. I can tell from the dimensions that it might fit very differently compared to other watches I've owned. I will keep searching for one to try before I buy.

I've worn larger watches like the 41.5mm omega seamaster without issues... so
I'm hopeful the Lange might be something that'll work for me. Like you, I don't wear my watches loose.

Thanks for the hodinkee 3 on 3 video. That video is the culprit for me getting interested in the dato in the first place :)

I just picked up a Dato up/down in platinum however mine came with a deployment clasp rather than a pin buckle which I think helps mitigate the top-heaviness. I'm primarily a Patek and Rolex collector but will say that this piece is among my all time favourites. Highly recommended.

Just returned from 6 month trip to Switzerland. ALS service rivaling Patek for slowness. Glad to have it back though.

I like it. The moon phase is spectacular and the size works. It's a clean and teutonic design. Was close to jumping on it but I'm still not sure if I dig the big-date situated so prominently.

Ben, I like this one quite a bit. It's a great combination of beautiful Teutonic design but with a bit "extra" that makes it special. As mentioned, the moon phase is extraordinarily well done here. May not be the ideal choice if one wants a simple dress piece, but I find the big date makes it something that I would wear much more often. The back doesn't look too shabby either.......

Dammit! Hahaha

I know once I buy it, I'm done for a good 2-3 years. The height and lug shape remain my concerns.

Thanks for enabling

Sorry to say but too big IMO. Lugs hang over too much. This piece is great but I have tried it as well and the fit was not good for me either
