It's subjective of course. There are so many greats out there. My personal favorite is Stevie Ray Vaughn. The reason I picked up a guitar. I love Jimi and Clapton too. I really like Slash and John Mayer as well.

Been listening to a lot of David Gilmour lately; his live concerts at Albert Hall and Gdansk are the stuff of legend.
And I think his guitar solo in "Wish You Were Here" propels him to stratospheric levels

Like Clapton a lot too- his Cream days, that is (and the fact that he likes Rolex watches, of course!)

Buckethead has got to be up there somewhere. Very odd but very gifted. (do a search on youtube!)

Buckethead is technically extremely talented and is radical in his style, but to me the beautiful mellow sounds Slash extracts from his LP is just 'music to my ears' he makes the guitar sing to me.

Song: Time
Album: How the West Was Won (1977).
17 minute live guitar solo where nothing is repeated and it is memorizing!

And he only has nine fingers.

Who is the greatest? That's very subjective. To me, it's Eric Clapton (if he will just stick to playing his guitar and quit trying to sing) and close second would be David Gilmour. Again, to each his/her own.

I don't like the notion of "world's greatest". I would go for most admired.

I think one not mentioned here is Eric Johnson who is indeed, one of the most amazing guitarists ever.

This really starts cooking about 3 minutes in.

To show his versatility:

So glad to have found this thread...here's my top 5 (since I can't choose one)

1. Eddie Van Halen - tapping and all that, but also has a great sense of rhythm and songwriting...recommended tracks:

"On Fire"
"Unchained"
Everything on 1984

2. Keith Richards - the king of rhythm guitar. 5 strings, two fingers, one____. I'll take any Keef track over any flash guitar playing

Recommended:
"Can't You Hear Me Knockin"
"Beast of Burden"
"Bitch"

3. Jimi Hendrix - electric guitar would never be the same today without him.

Recommended:

"Fire"
"Hey Joe"

4. Andy Summers - gave the Police that "big" sound

Recommended:

"Message in a Bottle"
"Synchronicity 2"

5. Eric Clapton - tasteful playing defined.

Recommended:

"White Room"
"Bell Bottom Blues"
"Cocaine"

I have been fortunate enough to have seen most of the "great" guitarists. I started going to concerts when I was 14 years old. Sadly. I didn't get to see Jimi Hendrix due to his passing. In my mind Stevie Ray Vaughn was the most feared, no one wanted to cut heads with him. Eric Clapton set the standard while in Cream. Jimmie Page has something all the other guitars want but will never have. Eric Johnson is a gift from above, his devotion to his instrument/tone is beyond compare. The late great Gary Moore never hit a bad note, listen to his live recording of "The Messiah will come again," if that song does not bring tears to your eyes, nothing will (Essential Montreux 1990).

David Gilmour from Pnk Floyd is beyond words. His tone is huge and beautiful. There are many examples of his greatness, but I recommend the live version of "Sorrow" from the Pulse Tour.

That being said, Rory Gallagher was the best I have ever seen. He could play mandoline, harmonica, acoustic, sitar and electric guitar with pure virtuosity. He had a beautiful voice and was a kind and humble man. At the age of 12, he purchased the first Fender Stratocaster imported into Ireland and played it until his death. I believe this Strat was the true inspriration for the relic craze that has been going for some years. Best recording: "Irish Tour 74."

Eric Clapton is my favorite guitarist. I know Mr Clapton is uncomfortable with the phrase "World's Greatest Guitar Player". He is a huge collector or Rolex watches and Patek Philippes. Any tour Clapton has been on in the past 10 years, he's been sporting a Rolex or Patek. Here's a pic from 2008, sporting a GV Milgauss. As you can probably tell, I'm nuts about Mr Clapton.

Jimi, if your standard is: (1) knowing the instrument to the fulllest extent, so therefore able to exploit the full range of tonal possibilities; and (2) most fully realized fusion of person and instrument in performance. But for musicality--taste and style and technique--different answers. Keith is the quintessential minimalist. Nobody does less to better effect, so he nails that category.

Pleasure to listen to? I'll take Albert Lee and James Burton, because I love rockabilly electric the most.
