No, even if he was mature enough, it might put him in harms way...

My sentiments too, because if any parent is thinking of a Rolex as a gift to a Thirteen year old CHILD, then they have too much.

to some, it's just a watch but, a watch that should be respected & earnt all the same & i fail to see how a 12/13 year old boy can appreciate such an item..

probably better off getting him the latest copy of Playboy instead, he'll love that far more
But if he goes blind now how will he ever appreciate a Rolex when he does get one!

He will likely leave it under his towel, whilst he surfs at the beach, play various other sprorts with it on during school lunch. Would you buy your boy a rolex at this age ?

I'm not taking sides here... but this thread got me thinking: wasn't the 31mm Rolex originally designed and marketed as a "boy size?" If so, wasn't the junior-size Rolex considered a luxury watch, even in the old days?

Like, maybe for this guy....

Like most of the members I don't think he's ready for that type of watch....yet. Give him a chance to EARN his first watch in some way - good grades, sports performance to mark a special occasion...when he's a bit older and will appreciate such a gift.

Right now, he'll probably care less that it's a ROLEX....it'll just go into the pile of 'things from Dad'....JMHO.

If he was into watches then maybe yes.
If it was just for "status" and/or being presumptuous....nope!

Look for a heavily used 1980's datejust with the plastic crystal for lower price.

when I was 13, though I had a watch (fossil I believe) watches were the last thing on my mind (dont quote me, its hard to remember any time before I had a drivers license). Not everyone has that same mindset, but for me personally I was not old enough to respect such an item. It never even crossed my mind that I could own a fine time piece until I was 23, then I went out and bought one.

If this is a serious thread, then I have two words...NO SHOT! A Rolex watch is something that needs to be appreciated and I do not believe a 13 year old boy would have a true appreciation of a Rolex...just my honest opinion.

Maybe try him out with an older Tudor to see what happens. The investment will be a fraction and it will show you how a Rolex would stand up to his 'lifestyle'. You might be pleasantly surprised.

I would love to see your faces the day you see a kid wearing a good watch. Why are you guys so stingy. It's not like your buying them a spaceship or a rocket launcher. We are talking about an old stainless Rolex. STOP BEING ELITISTS!!!! THIS IS NOT SOME EXCLUSIVE CLUB.

when my brother was 13 and at the ecole internationale de genève, a classmate of his brought one of his many rolexes to school and smashed it with a rock on a dare. this was a kid who was given everything and valued nothing.

I'd buy my son that value of a rolex in silver coins.

Graduation from graduate school sounds more appropriate to me, though I don't have a 12-year-old. My son will be born in 6 weeks, and I've bought him a few hand and long things that go boom, to give to him in his teenage years.

When I was a teenager my dad offered to pay for some technical classes for me and I got certified with computers so that by the time I was old enough to work, I was making 20 an hour, and I spent some of it frivolously on girls and saved the rest for college and also bought a pickup. It was then I learned an important life lesson that education and hard studying could result in increasing my earning capacity. I am glad he spent the money on those early technical classes for me, because I am where I am today having learned that life lesson.

Hard work, intuition, education, risk, and fiscal responsibility have given me the THINGS I have today, but I cherish what I have BECOME through the process, far more than the things I have.

I hope THIS is the tradition I can pass on to my son.

No and I'd give the cheeky little tike a clip around the earhole for good measure.

Totally agree. But I would suggest that the other question regarding the purchase of a luxury watch for a 7 year old is just as absurd as this one.

Hmmm...wonder why they closed the other post. I'm curious as to whether our 7 year old WIS is getting a TT sub or Daytona.

Or how about a Penn manual bail 706z on a custom rod for 500 bucks?
